BUG HUNT DAY AT THE BUTTERFLY HOUSE
Saturday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Field session at 1 p.m.
Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, 15193 Olive Blvd. in Faust Park, Chesterfield, MO
Cost is included with Butterfly House admission
($6 adults, $4.50 seniors, $4 ages 4 to 12, free ages 3 and under)
Young backyard explorers can step up their search for critters with the help of the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Join a staff entomologist for Bug Hunt Day on Saturday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Collect live insects in the field; learn about aquatic insects, beetles and more through fun crafts and games; and participate in a scavenger hunt to win a prize. Activities are designed for families with children ages two through 12, and are included with Butterfly House admission ($4-$6).
Entomology is the science of studying insects. Learn the proper methods for collecting bugs, how to identify them, and how to start your own collection under the direction of a Butterfly House entomologist. Then, put your knowledge to the test as you join a field collecting session at 1 p.m. in the prairie section of Faust Park. Children will practice capture-and-release techniques and all supplies will be provided. Come prepared with comfortable walking shoes. Participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., several games and crafts explore the world of insects. Play a special version of the “Bean Bag Toss” game using an insect collecting net called a Malaise trap. Decorate your own bug jar and fill it up with pretend critters. See how many beetles you can catch in a “Pit Fall Trap.” Browse through a collection of aquatic and aerial insects, and more.
Hone your detection skills on a scavenger hunt throughout the Butterfly House. Find all of the items to receive a free surprise from the Madame Butterfly Gift Shop. Scavenger hunt participants also receive a 5% discount off any purchase in the store.
The Butterfly House is located at 15193 Olive Blvd. at Faust Park in Chesterfield, Mo. Admission is $6 adults, $4.50 seniors and $3 children ages four through 12. Children age three and under are free.
For more information, visit www.butterflyhouse.org or call (636) 530‑0076, extension 10.  The Butterfly House is a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
