Can I Quit?

That's how I feel after 2 days back into school.  I knew I'd face problems with Oldest b/c we always do but Youngest loves school and has been asking to go back. The problem is that all he wants to do is write/draw and do math flashcards.  During bible and geography he plays and doesn't listen so when asked a question I get "WE JUST DON'T KNOW, MOMMA!" It is driving me crazy!  Oldest does ok during group time but as soon as he has a worksheet forget it.  He refuses to do independant work in a timely fashion.  Yesterday it took from 3pm to 9pm to do 2 sentences using spelling words.  I had to remind him what a quarter was worth (even though he's been using them to buy icecream all summer), how to count by 2's, 5's and 3's, How to tell time.  It was like he'd never done school before.  I had to remind him again today which hand was the hour hand and which hand was the minute.  Youngest got done today and went outside and Oldest did a spelling test with me (yes a test, we are finishing up last year not actually starting a new year).  He made a 50 on the test.  He missed 2 just because he didn't finish writing them.  When I asked why he thought he did so bad b/c we had just reviewed these words and I was confident he was ready for his test he said he just wanted to go outside with brother.  Well I found this funny which made him mad.  It was funny b/c we have to PUSH him out the door if we want him to play outside.  All summer he has wanted the tv and if he doesn't get that he sits in his room doing nothing.  He occasionally looks at books but basically does nothing.  Hubby even joked Sunday and said for punishments we need to make Youngest stay inside and make Oldest go outside.  So when he was upset b/c he couldn't be outside, I laughed!  Then I nicely explained that as soon as he got his work done he could go outside unless he did a poor job and then he would re-do it.  I also pointed out that nobody else was home from school yet so he needed to just relax and do his work.  He is working but it is slow.  I just don't know how to encourage him to go faster. I know that he knows how to do the work it's just getting him to do it.  And he has comprehension problems when he reads.  He is an excellent reader but he doesn't take in what he is reading so I have to try to work on that.  I have chosen books I know he likes and have him read a little bit and then answer the questions.  I can't give him the question ahead of time or he will read until he finds the answer and then skim to find the next one but not really read the book.  He says he likes to read and is always in books and says he's reading them but he isn't he is just looking at the pictures.  I really want to help him but I'm not sure how.

I'm praying this year gets better.  This is our 3rd year and if it isn't better we will have to put him in school.  I feel like the Lord led us to homeschool but I just am not sure I can continue this.  Anyway, that is how our first 2 days back have been.  I'm praying it will improve and that if I stay on the current schedule they will get use to it and it will help.  I've tried everything under the sun as far as schedule/ no schedule and I really think the schedule will help. I just pray I'm right.

I hope everyone else is having a great week!

Sheltered Not Shattered

About Me

I am a 30 something, stay at home mom of 2 wonderful boys. I am married to my best friend who also happens to be the most aggravating person I know (sometimes). We live in a small town and can't wait to move out into the country (or atleast have some land so we feel like we're in the country). I homeschool both of my boys and am enjoying the adventure of learning along side them. I love to read and scrapbook when (if ever) I have the time. We listen to southern gospel music with some other gospel mixed in occasionally and we love Adventures in Odyssey. I blog as a release and as a way to meet other like minded people. I hope that my blog is interesting and always family friendly. If you don't like what you read then please don't comment, just don't read. If you do like what you read then stay around and visit for awhile.
