Toxic Diapers, Could it Be True?????

Ok Dear Ones,

Here is some info that is worth researching.  It's also a response to a question someone asked me.  Once again I think we have not been given the whole truth.  Today's subject is diapers.  Those small absorbent things which make our lives easier.  Those treasured convieniencies that we would really hate to have to give up, but please read this, research it, and then see if you still feel the same attachment you once felt.

Disposable diapers are made from synthetic fibers, plastics, and other unknown deodorizing chemicals, that are not good for a babies skin.  On top of diaper rashes the Consumer Products Safety Commission included these in their list of complaints: chemical burns, noxious chemical and insecticide odors(yes, I said insecticide), reports of babies tearing the diapers apart, and then consuming them, or putting them in other places like noses, etc, diaper coverings melting on babies skin, and staining of the skin.  That all sounds pretty bad huh, but that isn't what bothers me the most.  Do you remember when we were talking about sanitary pads, and the dioxins that are present in them?  Well, guess what?  Disposable diapers made from the same bleached white paper, contain 90 parts per trillion dioxins, which can cause cancer, birth defects, liver damage, and immune system suppression.  That is definately more than I am willing to play arond with.  90 parts per trillion may not seem like alot, but like I said before, one of the chemicals present in dioxins, has been called the most toxic chemical ever produced.  The thought that I put those things on my small babies unaware, trusting that they were safe, makes me mad.  My children are all potty trained now, but if I have more I will not be going the route of toxic diapers.  I'd rather wrap a sock around them before I would do that, knowing what I do now.   What are some safer solutions you may be asking.

Well we have old trusty, 100% cotton diapers with natural fiber covers.  Yes this is more work, but it is alot less expensive, and it's environmentally friendly too.  I would think it would have to be much more comfortable on our little treasures as well.  If you do go this direction and wash your diapers at home, I would suggest making your own laundry detergent, because it is much milder on babies skin. Supermarket detergents have been known to cause irritation to their skin as well.

Option number 2, you can buy diapers at the health food store.  I know one of our stores here locally carries them.  I have never picked them up to read about them, but they are made by the same company that makes the natural pads I buy.  I'll see if I can get info incase someone wants to look for them online.

I hope this doesn't overwhelm anyone.  We learn in stages.  Take this information and build on what you already know.  If you stay open and willing to learn, it's amazing the things you can find out.  You don't have to know it all right now, just what the Lord gives you for this day, and the fact that you are reading this, lets me know that you care what is affecting your family, for good and bad.

I hope you are challenged and encouraged to check out these things for yourselves.  Feel free to ask me any questions.  I'll do my very best to answer them.  The Lord has been so generous in giving me information like this.  I want to give Him all the praise and glory for caring about issues like these.  He is Good!

In Christ Jesus,

Geanine

I am planning on switching to cloth because it is cheaper. I don't think I have thought about there actually being toxins in them, but it does make sense. Well, I guess I better get to sewing those diapers! Thanks for your wisdom and insight, it is encouraging.

I am glad that my littlest one is almost potty trained.

I have only been putting him in disposables when he is asleep at night and when we go to church on Sundays. I think I am going to make more changes... the weather is going to break soon and then he will definately be trained.

I answered your comment on my blog.
