Homemade Vanilla Extract

Here is the easiest and best mixtures I've found.

You can use Brandy or a good quality Vodka.  I think that Brandy gives a little more pungent taste, but either one is really good.  This is truly a treat, and seeing how very expensive pure vanilla is, it is very economical.  I make big bottles full, and just set them aside, so I never run out. It also makes great gifts, and I have sold several bottles to some local stores for $25.  These are the big vinegar type bottles.

Simple recipe:

In a pint jar add 2cups of Brandy or Vodka and 1 vanilla bean split lengthwise or chopped in 4 in sections. Let  sit for 6 months.  I have used it in four months and it was good.  The longer  it sits, the better and stronger the taste of vanilla.  If you use larger jars, add more beans.

Hope you enjoy this as much as I have in my baking.

In Christ Jesus,

Geanine

This sounds really really neat. I want to do this and would like to try the laundry detergent too. This is all very NEW to me, so I'm not even sure where I would find some of the things I would need. Would I get the vanilla bean at a health food store or any grocery store? and the nels ?? for the detergent..
Thanks, Dawn

I have also heard of people putting a vanilla bean in the bowl of sugar and the bean flavors the sugar. As you run low you just add more. I haven't ever done it yet though.
