Ok, we've been reading The Swiss Family Robinson.  We've been reading and then discussing and then doing some activities related to the day's reading.  Yesterday our goal was to try some sugar cane and coconuts. 

We actually found frozen sugar cane at a local international grocery store.  I was babysitting some kids and they all tried some....actually only the younger ones did.  They were amazed at how sweet it tasted.  They also had a hard time figuring out how sugar could get from something like a cane or beet and end up in bags in grocery stores!

We bought a coconut, and that is one of our goals for today.....figure out how to get it open!  We've googled some steps.  If all else fails, I purchased a can of coconut meat and some coconut candy to try.  At some point this week or next, we'll work on pitching a tent.
