Cuneiform and Hieroglyphics

Yesterday we did the Ancient Egyptian writing activity.  Cameron wrote out a phrase in English, then we translated it into both Cuneiform and Hieroglyphics.  Then he copied all three versions onto both parchment paper and a clay tablet.  We are waiting for the clay tablet to dry so we can then put the scroll and the tablet out in the weather to see how they stand up to the elements.  Cameron was more than a little upset about this because it really looks cool and he doesn't want it to be destroyed by the weather so  I had him make copies of the one on parchment.  If the clay tablet doesn't hold up, I reserved another amount of clay so he can redo the tablet if necessary.  We poked holes in the tablet so we can hang it in his room...eventually.  It was a really cool project!  He also read a really cool book called "The Seeker of Knowledge" about the boy who eventually grew up to be the one to decipher the Rosetta Stone.  Very cool book indeed!  Anyone remember what 3 languages  the Rosetta Stone was written in?

He really enjoyed science co-op yesterday and is really looking forward to it.  Music was not what he thought it was going to be so he was a little disappointed (it is music appreciation-you know-composers, that kind of stuff)  but we discussed it and I promised him we would work on the other music -the kind you play-here at home, plus he's in choir.....lots of music around here!

Today we begin the mummification of King Cluckankhamen.  He (Cameron...don't think the chicken really cares....)has really been looking forward to this project!  I also have a movie from Netflix coming about Egyptian Mummies and the process.  Some dear person on another e-loop sent out a cool link to the Discover website where they have many Ancient Egyptian activities as well-we'll hopefully get to check those out this afternoon after choir!

I really wish I was more camera literate so I could figure out how to download (upload?) lots of great pictures like so many other bloggers do.....all in good time I guess!
