Homeschooling in Illinois

Day #2

Click here to start at day 1.

Our second day of vacation was spent, well, driving.  The boys played with their leapsters and worked on the notebooks.  I copied pages of the states we planned on going through.  They were from Highlights.  They had all sorts of information about the state.  We learned all the capitals of the states that we drove through.  We also had some fun playing Dora's car bingo, printed out from NickJR.com  I also put in some info on St. Patricks day in my oldest's notebook, along with some detailed info on wolves.  My 4 yo only got coloring pages.

Princess C spent most of her time playing with her foot.

We would put on some videos for them to watch.  My daugher's favorite was her Signing Time DVD.  I am going to get her another one in her Easter basket.  All the kids love learning the signs.

In the afternoon, my mom had called to let us know that there were a whole lot of cranes a couple hours west of us.  (Her and my grandma had left about 10 hours before we did).  The reception was bad and I thought she meant contruction cranes.  I was thinking, "You are wasting my roaming charges to tell me that??"  Then I realized she meant birds.  I still didn't think it was a big deal.  As we were driving, we kept making fun of all the birds we were supposedly going to see.  (sorry mom)  Right around sunset, I looked in the sky and saw an enourmous amount of birds.  It was crazy!  I didn't get any pictures, but here are some my mom got.

Apparently, from York, NE on westward for few miles, every year about this time, the cranes migrate over.  It is a huge event.  People come from all over to see it.  I wish I could have seen it daylight.

  Day # 3....

I did not see your new decorations. I refuse to acknowledge them. Tee Hee. You're welcome for my pictures, too. (Especially since you didn't believe me about them anyway.) I can't help it if I'm too busy to blog, not like you with four children, a husband, house and pets, cooking and cleaning. I'd put a smiley face here but it probably wouldn't work for me! Love ya. You are so ORGANIZED!! If we were going on vacation...I'd be asleep before we were an hour down the road. Something about the open road lulls me asleep :) What a great photo of the cranes...my first thought was construction, too!!

We will not be in Illinois...altho one year I 'd love to go...I grew up in Naperville and would enjoy taking my children back to the area. Plus, all the great museums in the city!

Mar. 24, 2006 - About your comment about us moving

It's not going to be a drop FL and move to NC, it's going to be a looooooooonnnnng process. On top of that, we have animals to move and there's not even a house on the land for us yet. We probably won't move there until sometime next year. We'll just have to shuttle back and forth every couple of months.

Enough about me, looks like you are a well planned mother, neat and orginized, what's your secret, do tell your loving cyber sister.

That is amazing about the cranes! I would love to see that.

My dad was driving out West one year, and I think he was in New Mexico, and he ran into the millions of butterflies migrating to Mexico! He said it was one of the best things he's ever seen in his life. He has also seen frogs by the hundreds jumping across Route 66! Driving from here (MI) out to the West Coast has always been one of my dreams. My dad has done it at least a dozen times -- maybe even 2 dozen.

Love the car notebooks, we spend a lot of time in our van, I used to do that but have forgotten it for quite a while, you've inspired me to make new ones.

About Me

Oh, the crazy things that happen in my house.... I am the wife of M for 8 years now. I am the mother of a 10 yo boy - D, 6 1/2 yo boy - N, 4 yo girl - Princess C, 2 1/2 yo boy -Toddler B, and girl Lil' L born May 18. I've been homeschooling since 2003. I lean towards a Charlotte Mason approach, but more often than not, it's "whatever works".
