Homeschooling

Posted in Schooling

I don't understand how people can say they just loooove homeschooling.  I hate it.  D will spend hours on one thing - not really doing it,  but butting into other people's business, staring into outer space, and any other thing he can think of to aggravate me.  I can't stay on top of him because I am trying to do school with N as well, and you can't forget about "Princess" C who is always saying she has to go potty, yet refusing to go without me.  And then there is Baby B, who is currently feeling sick and clingy and not sleepy.  I don't know how to get my oldest to do his work.  When I get really mean and start adding more work, he just cries the day away.  HE IS 8!!!!!  ARGH!  C is done on the potty, gotta go crack the whip, again, and again.....

hang in there!! homeschooling will get better...It can be hard at times to keep by little one's busy while schooling my 9 yr old, but I try to bring out crayons and puzzles that will keep them occupied for a bit. I also started schooling in my dinette area instead of the basement, so we could be close to the bathroom and while they're busy I'm nearby washing dishes, cooking etc...blessings~juliet

I am so sorry.
I have had the same kind of problems and usually when that happens we put the school books away for the rest of the day and try it again later.
Hang in there...I think we all go thru this a lot. Homeschooling isn't easy but the out come is wonderful.
I will pray for you strength and wisdom and a peace in your heart.
Have a good day,
<3 Christina

For some reason I can't see the comments right now. Hopefully after I post this I will. Always good to get insight into these kids.

I recommend two books...The Myth of the ADD Child. It has a great list of things to do to help them at the end of the book. The other is The Gift of ADHD. I know the titles are contrary to each other but both have great ideas on how to handle these "out there" kids. I've found them very helpful in dealing with Stanley.

Another thing...don't give him any more work. What I have tried to do is to ease him into things. I see what he can handle, then, when he's got that under control, I add more. It takes a loooooooong time. I'm not sure if your dh would be willing to allow you to wait until Saturday to clean your house so you can spend more time with your son? It would really help if he could. Or maybe you could just clean after dinner with his help?

I sit with Stanley for all his work. He just turned 10 and, finally, this year, I think I can work with him to help him get more independent. I NEVER could have done this when he was 8. These kids take much more time and work than the others. But it will be worth it in the long run.

I see now a bit every day a glimmer of the end. Yesterday during school he was working on his dictionary skills. He was having fits over this one word. It was obvious to me that the problem was, as usual, him trying to reinvent the wheel. Not sure if your son does this but for some reason he will not receive instruction and insists on making up his own way of doing things. Creative, yes. Productive, maybe some day, but not now. A year ago this would have been the end of his day. Now, I sat with him and calmly, but very firmly, explained to him that I had showed him how to look the word up and he had refused to do it correctly, that's why he was having problems. He was still in a huff but a bit more calm so I showed him, for the umpteenth time, how to look the word up. For the next two words, instead of having another melt-down as he would have a year ago, he calmly came to me and said he was having trouble finding them. On the last one he was even able to laugh at himself for his mistake.

As I said, it takes a loooooooong time for these kids to get it. I will be praying for you.

Jan. 17, 2007 - I feel your pain!

I have the same problem with my 8yo. We had a terrible day yesterday. What should've taken 45min took 3 hours of crying. I am also many times at my wits end with him. BUT...

You don't hate homeschooling ;) (Although, you may have a strong dislike for it sometimes. hehehe)
If you did you wouldn't be doing it. Try these things:

Pray.

Pray with your buddy.

Hug him.

Look at this website : http://www.visualspatial.org/
http://www.gifteddevelopment.com/Visual_Spatial_Learner/articles.htm
to determine if your son is visual/spatial... I have haunting feelings that this might be the problem at our house.

Try to remember that your son is not the bad guy. He's not trying to get you angry, even if it seems like it. He needs you to teach him how to concentrate and to control himself

I know what you're going through! Matter of fact, you can be sure the same things may be happening at my house the moment you read this :) hehehe.

Come over to my blog or e-mail me with an update to how your feeling today :)

I'm praying for you ;)

Jan. 17, 2007 - Got What I Deserved

Yesterday, I read this and was glad that I didn't have little ones. I was thinking how easy homeschooling is with an 8 and 11 year old. Today, both Eman and I were coming down with colds. I had assigned Eman Basic Math from Abeka. He loves his Math-U-See Pre-Algebra, but hates the Basic Math. I alternate the two. So, he put math for last today. He took him over 2 hours to do it. He had a meltdown and told me how everyone else has a nicer mom than him. He also said he hates his math, homeschooling, and me. I told him that no matter what school he went to, he would still have to learn the same stuff. After the spanking and a threat of get it done in 45 min or you're doing another page, it got done quickly.

About Me

Oh, the crazy things that happen in my house.... I am the wife of M for 8 years now. I am the mother of a 10 yo boy - D, 6 1/2 yo boy - N, 4 yo girl - Princess C, 2 1/2 yo boy -Toddler B, and girl Lil' L born May 18. I've been homeschooling since 2003. I lean towards a Charlotte Mason approach, but more often than not, it's "whatever works".
