Laundry Solution

Posted in Household stuff

A few months ago, while I was browsing blogs, I can across someone's laundry solution.  At the time, I thought they were nuts.  (no offense if it was you)  This lady had put away all but 3 outfits for her kids.  She said it was the most wonderful thing in the world because it reduced her laundry dramatically.  I thought that would never work for us becuase I would have to make sure I did laundry often enough to make sure they didn't run around without clothes.  But the biggest problem was that I would get sick of the outfits.  How could I possibly look at them in the same three outfits day after day?

Fast forward to Christmas.  N has always had a problem keeping his clothes in his drawers.  When he pulled something out, if he wasn't going to wear it, he would put it in the laundry instead of putting it back in his drawer.  For Christmas, he received the Armor of God and some Hulk hands and feet.  He would run around changing himself into different people.  He would go from N, to the Hulk, to Edmund (from Narnia) and back to himself again.  After awhile it evolved into changing clothes as well.  I couldn't get him to stop throwing his clothes in the laundry after only wearing it for 30 seconds!  I had had enough.  I remembered what I read a few months prior and decided to give it a try.  But instead of going down to three outfits, I went down to 7.  I emptied his drawers and gave him one drawer for each day, with his Sunday clothes being in his closet.  In each drawer I put pjs, a shirt, pants, underwear, undershirt, and socks.  On each drawer I labeled the day.  On Monday's I wrote, "put Monday's pants in Tuesday's drawer."  And on Tuesday, I wrote, "Wear Monday's pants."  I did the same for Wednesday and Thursday.  If he stayed dry at night then I had him put his pjs back in his drawer to wear the next week.  My laundry has shrunk by at least half.  I cannot believe how much laundry this kid created!  I am so happy with this system.  And when I get sick of a shirt, I can just switch it with a different one.  So thank you, whoever you are, for this system!

I have thought of doing this a million times. I think the only thing that has stopped me is the faces of my relatives and friends when they find out another one of my child torchuring techniques. Thanks for sharing. You are making me want to try it again.

Also, thanks for the comment on compassion. It was very interesting and convicting to me. I know I don't normally feel compassion like the Lord did. Thanks for sharing.

Now we can laugh at people who say this blogging thing is good for nothing. Look at all the help you have received and how you have blessed others too. Love ya, mom

Feb. 6, 2007 - Brilliant Idea!

We never had a problem w/ clothes for the oldest two. They had 12 coat hangers. If it didn't fit on a hanger, it didn't live at our house. Unfortunately, they are sized *just so*, in that they're about half a step off from being able to do the hand-me-down thing. OK, not a problem. Then, enter Smidge, who has a TON of clothes, all hand-me-downs from the older two. And then we had Em... and I swear I birthed three wardrobes worth of clothing along with this child. We haven't bought a THING, but she has an entire closet rack to herself. Oy!

Anyway, I'm stashing this idea away for future reference. When she's no longer bound to whatever garment decision I make for the day, I may need it.

My 2 yo sounds like your N- and My 7 yo is determined to wear a new set of jammies every night. I've concoured that by ptting used jammies back in the drawer. I Three outfits huh? I think I will continue to think on this one for a bit- I'm not sure If I could give up some of the cutie things Emma got recently. Though I guess I should get rid of the older stuff....

Feb. 12, 2007 - clothes

My 12 year old brought down FOUR hampers full a week or so ago!!!! I'd just washed his coat 4 days in a row!! I was good--I didn't scream at him!! I just quietly decided he was getting 5 sets of school clothes, a few extra socks and undies [that is more than 5 sets] 2 sets of jamies, and some old play stuff for outside.

Not only was he actually READY for school on time with fewer choices, but he managed to dig up socks for himself ["I just put some on to go to slee"] that he would NOT have worn had I offered them!!!

We don't always realize how "advantag-ing" our kids with tons of clothes can DISadvantage them.

Good post.
