Bunk Beds

Posted in Family
For the last 9 months, poor N has been sleeping on a mattress on the floor.  When we put our house up for sale, the two older boys were upstairs sharing a room.  We took down one of the beds to make the room look bigger.  When we had a showing, we picked the mattress up off of the floor and put it on the other bed.  The boys were supposed to switch off.  D wanted the floor at first, and we had to make sure N had a turn.  But then, somewhere along the way.  D decided he wanted a real bed.  And N was left with the mattress.  And then we ended up moving N downstairs to the nursery (shhh) so that C would sleep through the night.  A mattress, a toddler bed, a crib, a bookshelf, and a dresser were all shoved into a tight space.  When anything was on the floor, there was no where to walk.  It drove me batty.  So I said, "We need to get N a bed."  We had a day bed we were going to use so that we could stick stuff under the bed for "storage".  Now, for some reason, whenever we decide to do anything (like fix a leaky sink) it turns into a huge ordeal.  Even something as simple as putting together a bed isn't simple.  First we couldn't find all the parts, so we borrowed a different bed.  Then we didn't have screws so we bought some.  Then we tried putting it together and one of the screw holes was stripped so we ended up with a bed that might take out someone's eye.  So, we took it back apart and N was still on the mattress.  We knew eventually we would need bunk beds, so, now was the time to get them.

We also got a trundle, which they needed to order, so that hasn't come yet.  Ideally, N would be on the top, and C would be on the bottom.  And we would have a giant drawer for storage.  But, N really, really moves a lot in his sleep.

And even though there are railings on the top, I just don't feel comfortable having him up there.  Really, can you blame me?  So, D gets to come sleep downstairs on the top bunk, N gets the bottom, C gets the trundle and B is still in his crib.  And we have four kids in one bedroom.  I guess we could downsize and buy a two bedroom house.

We discovered we can't fit a standard trundle frame under the boys' bunk beds, so we will have to build one for Smidge's bed. Right now, we haul his mattress out from beneath the bunks at night. But you know - I *love* being able to stack everybody in there and still have floor space! It's SO much nicer than having that additional bed frame taking up floor space during the day, isn't it? I *heart* trundles!

Love the sleeping pictures, too! Those are just great!

And number 5 could sleep on a hammock! Right? Awww... Wouldn't that be sweet??

I love your photos -- he IS a mover!! You'll have to warn any perspective wife. *wink*

I can totally relate to the "everything turning into a huge ordeal". It is like that, too. Sigh... We just plan for everything to take, at least, twice as long as it should. That usually eliminates much of the frustration.

Blessings, Beckie :o)

Oh I like those bunkbeds! We'll need to invest in another set before our daughter comes home!

About Me

Oh, the crazy things that happen in my house.... I am the wife of M for 8 years now. I am the mother of a 10 yo boy - D, 6 1/2 yo boy - N, 4 yo girl - Princess C, 2 1/2 yo boy -Toddler B, and girl Lil' L born May 18. I've been homeschooling since 2003. I lean towards a Charlotte Mason approach, but more often than not, it's "whatever works".
