Just Breathe

Posted in Schooling
I want to teach my kids about the weather this year.  My only problem is, HOW?  I have a stack of books that I don't know what to do with.  Do I make a lapbook?  If so, how?  Do I just make a weather notebook?  How do I plan this?  How can it be organized?  What paper should I use to write on?  I'm having heart palpitations just thinking about it!
So, instead of figuring it out - since I CAN'T, I am playing dice with D.  And I am slaughtering him!  Poor kid.  But, I can't really enjoy it because I am still nervous about the weather study!  I can't even fully enjoy my ice cream.  I don't know what it is about this that is getting me so unnerved.  Breathe in, breathe out....

Not sure exactly what you want to study but here's a link I found: http://www.ciese.org/curriculum/weatherproj2/en/

BTW, this is Sara (formerly Dancing Boys' Mom) I was sitting here doing the banking and I thought I'd go to the Homeschoolblogger home page and see if I could find inspiration (we started school Monday). I saw your name and immediately I thought, well, online or not I should have been checking to see about your baby.

Congratulations. She is beautiful. So that's what a baby girl looks like. ;-)

Hmm...Palpitations huh! Relax because that is what homeschooling is about. You do not even have to start weather immediately. First decide what aspects of weather you want the kiddos to know about. Narrow it down to a few basics and start with that. If you want them to do a lapbook just check out the sites that have them for ideas to make your own, or free sites that give instructions or just buy one so you do not have to do it all. And yell HELPPPPPPPPP MOMMMMMMMMM/ABIGAAAAAAAA
love ya, mom

Get the older ones a Farmer's Almanac and have them track the forecast from the Almanac against the weather station and what the actual weather is. Once they're used to paying attention to the weather, see if they can spot patterns. (This is how ours figured out that the rain that invariably hits NM during the county fairs is probably tied to the hurricanes in the gulf... der. We had no idea, in all the years we lived there.)

Then, see what sparks their interest and go from there! You can do it, painlessly and enjoyably. :-)

About Me

Oh, the crazy things that happen in my house.... I am the wife of M for 8 years now. I am the mother of a 10 yo boy - D, 6 1/2 yo boy - N, 4 yo girl - Princess C, 2 1/2 yo boy -Toddler B, and girl Lil' L born May 18. I've been homeschooling since 2003. I lean towards a Charlotte Mason approach, but more often than not, it's "whatever works".
