Going Wheat Free

Posted in Family

My 7 yo son, D, has had bad ecxema for quite a few years now.  We tried a lot of different creams, none of them making a difference.  The doctor finally decided it was also a skin infection and gave him antibiotics and a cream.  That cleared it up almost completely.  It was so amazing to see his skin looking so nice.  A few days later, it started coming back. We are now using Desonide Cream  .05% and that is keeping it mild.  When we see spots, we put the cream on, and the spots will go away in about a week of treatment.  But when I read the warnings on this cream, I didn't want to give him it at all!  They sounded terrible.  But what could I do?  His skin was just awful!  We took him off of milk, and that didn't make a difference.  So this week, I decided it was time to take him off of wheat and see if that helps.  It is soooo hard to remember not to give him anything with wheat in it.  Wheat is in EVERYTHING!  Anyone out there with wheat allergies?  I would love to hear how it affects you, and how creative you get with your meals.  I bought wheat free bread, spagetti, and waffles.

We are gluten-free because our 2yo has Celiac Disease. It is a huge adjustment at first. I've even cried over the lack of one flour needed to make breads (because it takes several different "odd" ingredients to make G-F bread). But now it is just part of our life. I would recommend checking out some of the Celiac sights like celiac.com and celiac.org, they can give you some excellent resources and recipes. Danna Korn wrote "Wheat Free, Worry Free" which is almost my favorite book on living without wheat. One important thing to remember is that there is a lot of hidden wheat in things. We had thought we'd removed all the guten from our son in the first month but found out that, among other places, there was some in his vitamins. Definitely check them. Most "brand-name" and store-brand vitamins have some type of wheat in them. Also, a biggie is cross-contamination at restaurants. Often they will fry their french fries in the same oil as the breaded meat. This will contaminate the french fries. Anyway, that's all I can think of to ramble about. Please feel free to ask any questions you want over at my blog or you can e-mail me: sjkclemom at verizon dot net. Good luck. Like I said, once you get used to it, it really does become second nature. Even my 9yo son is always reading labels now. lol

About Me

Oh, the crazy things that happen in my house.... I am the wife of M for 8 years now. I am the mother of a 10 yo boy - D, 6 1/2 yo boy - N, 4 yo girl - Princess C, 2 1/2 yo boy -Toddler B, and girl Lil' L born May 18. I've been homeschooling since 2003. I lean towards a Charlotte Mason approach, but more often than not, it's "whatever works".
