I love waking up in the mountains. I love the smell of pinon pine, and the crunch of scree under my feet. I love smelling wood smoke in my hair (even if there's marshmallows in it, too) and singing songs by campfire. The sheer number of stars astounds me... how did Galileo even bear to look up? We spent the weekend in the collegiate range of the Rockies in central Colorado. Our friends-- who have much more camping experience than we do-- are our camping coaches, and bring most of the equipment. Highlights this trip included setting up our tent without help (wa-hoo!), playing Capture the Flag, reading Treasure Island aloud until the daylight faded, and playing in the Arkansas River. Each time we camp, we become more proficient, the packing is easier, and the kids enjoy it more.
