Encouragement Along the Way

Photobucket ~ About Me ~
Hi, welcome to my blog. I will be sharing our experience as we homeschool 5 boys - our struggles, trials, prayers, and blessings. There are many challenges along the way for any homeschooler and I hope you are encouraged by what you read here. We use Sonlight and My Father's World as our main curriculum. Thank you for stopping by and comments are welcomed.

Encouragement Along the Way

Jan. 20, 2008 - Today's Daily Worship

I have always loved the story in Exodus 17 when the Israelites are fighting the Amalekites.  The Lord tells Moses to raise his staff and as long as the staff is raised the Israelites will win but if Moses lowers the staff they will lose.  My favorite part is when Aaron and Hur come along side and help Moses by holding his arms up when the get tired.  It reminds me of our walk with the Lord.  Sometimes we get tired and we need some one to come along side and give us a helping hand and encourage us with their words or actions.  I want to share the devotion that I read in my bible this morning:

Giving An Assist
Exodus 15:22-18:27

Moses built and altar there and called it "The Lord is my Banner."  (Exodus 17:15)

Winning battles typically involves superior weapons, larger forces, or a better strategy.  But when God is Commander-in-Chief, all rules of war are thrown out.  Consider how various people participated in winning this particular battle (Ex. 17:8-16): Joshua fought, Moses prayed, Aaron and Hur assisted, and the LORD God, Yahweh Nissi, was the rallying point - the banner lifted high that carried them to victory.
As long as Moses kept his eyes focused on God and his arms lifted to him, the Israelites prevailed.  But as he grew tired and his arms sagged, the enemy advanced.  Aaron and Hur saw Moses' problem, helped him sit, and then physically assisted Moses to keep his arms raised over the battlefield.
How true that is in our lives as well.  When we are focused on God, recalling that he is our banner, our victory, and our only hope, we are able to overcome the obstacles and conflicts in this life.  But when we tire and allow fatigue and weariness of spirit to distract us from spending time with God in worship and prayer, the enemy advances and overtakes us.  If we insist on solitary worship and obedience, we will fail.  We need other believers to come alongside and assist us to persevere.
Let the examples of Aaron and Hur remind you of an important asset when it comes to your faith walk. Look for opportunities where you can join with others in prayer, encouragement, and worship.  Identify those fellow believers who can come alongside you and hold up your hands.
Begin your day as Joshua did, fighting in God's name.  Raise your hands to God in constant prayer as Moses did.  And look for those Aarons and Hurs who can assist you throughout the day to persevere, keeping your eyes on the Lord, your banner lifted high.

Thank you, Jesus, for the Aarons and Hurs in my life, who come alongside and help.  We lift each other's arms in encouragement and endurance that you provide through one another. We salute you as Yahweh Nissi our banner of victory.  Amen

*Taken from The iworship daily devotional bible

I think that there is another aspect that they missed in this devotional and that is we need to look around us and see who needs encouragement.  Our focus should not be on ourselves but on others - who needs an encourager today in your life?  Ask the Lord to show you and then encourage them to persevere and continue in their walk of faith.
I think also a little warning is in order: our focus should not be on others but on the Lord.  We need to make sure we are not leaning on others and not on the Lord.  He needs to be our focus point not those encouragers in our lives.

Hebrews 3:13  But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

I, too, love that story!! Thank you for sharing.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
—Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Aug. 21, 2008 - Thankful Thursday

Iris at Sting My Heart is focusing on peace today. Everyone longs for peace - peace in their homes and in their countries. As Iris pointed out one definition of peace is: freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions. Another definition, which encompasses the above definition is: Strong's Concordance 7965 - Hebrew Shalom ..... A word study in the New King James version for SHALOM says: Completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord.

I am so thankful for the peace of God. It is more than being free from conflict on the outside...it is true freedom from conflict on the inside. So many times we appear to be cool, calm and collective but inside our emotions and thoughts are raging. I am so thankful that we, as believers, can have shalom even in our inner being. When the storm is raging call on your Prince of Peace and He will quiet you with His peace. Thank you Jesus for that peace...it is a strong testimony of your work in our lives.

I am also thankful for my MIL and her sister. They have offered to take the boys for a day so that I can have some time to myself.

I am thankful that my dh's new job is going well. The Lord has given him peace, wisdom and strength each day.

My prayer for you:
The LORD bless you, and keep you; the LORD make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace (shalom). Numbers 6:24-26

Aug. 14, 2008 - Thankful Thursday

"Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You..."Jeremiah 32:17

I am thankful there is nothing to difficult for our God. If He can create the heavens and the earth through His great power then we can be sure He is able to accomplish mighty things in our own lives.

I am thankful for my husband, who has worked tirelessly this week training in his second job and continues to accomplish work in the ministry. I am thankful for his dedication to the Lord and to his family.

I am thankful for my children. They are each a unique gift from the Lord. They may bring challenges into our lives but they are also a huge blessing.

Thank you Iris for hosting the Thankful Thursday meme. If you would like to know more head on over to her blog and check it out. You will not be disappointed.
