Momma In Oregon

Feb. 7, 2006 - The Three R's...

Today I've come to realize that sooner or later the last of the three R's will come easier to K. He's got the arithmatic down with no problem. He is writing really well. But it seems that reading is the last to really come to him. He is in 1st grade. He will now and then tell me he can't read yet...even though he knows most small words and can sound out bigger words. I think that he just need to keep trying and it will get easier for him. We are reading some Dr. Seuss books and I've got him in the BookIt program through Pizza Hut as an incentive for him to read. It also seems to help. We'll just keep plugging along and he should be reading with no problem by the end of the year.

My middle (11) still tries to tell me he can't read (or not well). He can and well. BUT he has a lot of trouble with comprehension, so he CAN read, but it doesn't alays make much sense to him.....

It's hard to read at this level with littel comprehension. Try to make sure your son is getting comprehension...

BookIt sounds neat, Ikeep saying I'll look into it, but never get around to it....

My boy is 8 1/2 and is just now getting comfortable with reading. The key for him was - not pushing, letting him go at his own pace, stopping with phonics programs (he's rightbrained so phonics are meaningless) and letting him read things that are interesting to him. He has really taken off and his reading like crazy. It really can pay to wait! :-)

Feb. 9, 2006 - Hello!

I saw that you came by my blog, and I added you to my friends list as well. I always worry that I am not doing the whole homeschooling thing right, but when I look at all of the others and their schedules, I see that I am just fine! Your schedule looks alot like mine does. My oldest is in the first grade like yours. Where at in Oregon are you from if you don't mind me asking? I love keeping track of all the oregon moms.

God bless,
Ali

Hi,
I just wanted to say hi, since I'm in Oregon too. I saw you on Ali's friends list. We should have an Oregon HSB get-together sometime!
Blessings,
Rebeca
