Jul. 2, 2009 Excited for CHEA!!
| I am so excited! The Christian Home Educators Association's annual Southern California Convention is almost here! Only one week to go. I have been busy making my list of what I want to buy this year. I always have such a hard time sticking to my list, though. I love the shopping!
I am also anxious to see the schedule of classes and speakers. It's always so motivating to get advice, ideas, and encouragement from so many different points of view. I love how so many people from so many walks of life can come together with the same common thread of values and purpose. In these times especially, it always makes me feel good to know that there are so many other people in California who believe in Christ and family!
If there is anyone else out there who attends the CHEA Southern California Convention I would love to hear about your thoughts and experiences.
Maybe I'll see you there! |

Jun. 11, 2009 Overcoming my fear!
| My husband is afraid of snakes. My sister is afraid of spiders. My mother is afraid of flying. My son is afraid of swimming. None of these things scare me. Well, maybe the spiders. What scares me? Blogging. Really! Haven't you noticed how empty my blog is? I really want to blog. I do. But I am a perfectionist and somehow, nothing I want to say seems profound enough or interesting enough to write. I worry that nobody will want to read what I have to say and so in the end I have said nothing. I recently picked up a magazine on blogging and over and over again I read each bloggers advice. Don't worry about what you write. Just write! So, here it is. It's short and not very interesting and not at all profound, but it's writing, and I'll keep writing. After all, practice makes perfect! |

May. 19, 2009 CHEA is coming!
| O.k. So, its really two months away. Still, I always get excited about this time of year as I pre-register and arrange for accommodations to attend one of my favorite annual events.
Each year I am on a mission for some particular product. This year I am in search of a good record keeping software program, preferably with modifiable templates as I would like to be able to insert my own letterhead and/or logo, personalize my report cards ,etc.
I would appreciate any input anyone has to give me on this subject

Aug. 14, 2008 Check out The Schoolhouse Planner!
I recently received The Schoolhouse Planner by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and I actually said out loud to myself "Wow!".
A lot of effort went into this planner and it shows. This is more than a planner. It begins with a year long calendar. Each month is themed and full of recipes, teaching ideas, resource lists and fact sheets pertaining to that months theme.
Next comes an extensive section of home school forms including various types of curriculum and daily planning pages, progress reports, activity, book and memorization logs, etc. There are too many to list.
The third section contains household forms such as menu planning pages, chore charts, various inventory and shopping list, prayer journal and budget sheets. Again, there is too much to list!
This planner is like several books in one and the great thing is that you can print out just the pages you need. The only thing I wish is that the writing blocks on the school planner pages were larger. I write big.
There are also themed monthly supplemental modules you can purchase with unit studies, worksheets, activities, recipes and more.
So, if you haven't had a chance to check it out for yourself do it here.
I think you'll be impressed. |

Aug. 14, 2008 The Old Schoolhouse digital magazine is here!
Anyone who knows me probably knows that I love magazines!
All you have to do is look at my library shelves, crafting room cupboards, the end tables in the family room, my magazine rack, the kitchen counter, my bedroom nightstand, my vanity table....I think you get the picture.
I love a cup of coffee or tea and a curl up on the couch with a magazine, so I was a little skeptical of digital magazines. "How can I curl up with my computer?", I thought. So, when TOS offered me a chance to check out their new digital magazine I decided to give it a whirl and I was pleasantly surprised.
It is formatted just like the hard copy, page for page and navigation is EASY. Also, there are a lot of special features that make it fun and helpful. My favorite thing about it? It's interactive! No more post it notes marking all the websites I want to check out. Just click the link right on the digital page! You can also search words or phrases and you can share articles with your friends and family via e-mail.
So, while I still haven't figured out how to get my Mac in the car with me for long drives I could definitely start using my kitchen counter for cooking instead of magazine storage.
Hmmmm, maybe my husband should get me a laptop. |

Aug. 13, 2008 Please help Baby Micah!
Hello everyone.
Today I'm asking for help for a precious baby boy named Micah Gower.
Micah's Dad Brian is an old friend from my Disneyland days who has been like a brother to me. I met Brian when he accidentally turned his pants into the Disneyland laundry with his wallet still in the pocket. This was a day after it had been returned to him after having been stolen. After an hour of searching laundry bags we recovered his wallet. He rushed off, being late for his second job, only to return 5 minutes later to the security building next door to mine. My shift had ended, so I went to see what had happened. He had accidentally parked in a carpool space that morning and a Denver boot had been placed on his car to prevent him from leaving. I sat with Brian for the hour that Disneyland Security made him wait before removing the boot and from then on we were great friends. I came to discover that days like this were were pretty common in Brian's life and he earned the nickname Murphy from my sister, referring to Muphy's Law, since it pretty much seemed anything that could go wrong would go wrong for Brian. Brian has been through a lot from divorced parents, to repeated break-in's and vandalism of his business to the untimely accidental death of his father...and I could go on, but through it all he has forged ahead with a positive outlook and faith in God.
Right now, Brian and his wife Laila are going through the biggest challenge of their life.Their 9 month old baby boy Micah was born with a heart defect called Tetrology of Fallot or TOF. He spent the first 3 months of his life in the hospital and has been in and out since. He has already had one open heart surgery, a tracheotomy and a gastrostomy and will need further procedures. He also requires around the clock nursing care at home.
Unfortunately, insurance does not cover all his medical bills and his parents are working 6 jobs between them to pay these bills as well as living expenses. As you can imagine this is very hard on them as well as Micah's big brother. A fund has been set up to help with costs.
Here's how you can help. My sister has started a month long cell phone drive with GRC Wireless Recycling. All we are asking for are unwanted cell phones, working or not. They will be exchanged for money that will be deposited into the Micah Gower Fund. You can view instructions and info on her page HERE.
You can learn more about Baby Micah HERE.
If you can help in any way I promise that it will be greatly appreciated!
Please keep this wonderful family in your prayers!
Thanks |

Aug. 5, 2008 A little about myself.
I was supposed to do this a couple of weeks ago but frankly I haven't had the brain power. It's a good thing school is out!
Like most of you I'm sure, I've been preparing orders for the coming school year. I did most of my main curriculum shopping at the CHEA (Christian Home Educators Association) of California's annual convention (which I can never get enough of, by the way) but still need a lot of supplements. So I've been up until 4:00AM most nights for the past two weeks researching for the best prices and shipping. On top of that, my husband starting working from home 2 weeks ago and I've been helping him with that. He is a television editor and works on teasers and promos for television shows. He still works for the company he always has but was offered an extra job on the side straight from NBC and this is the first time he has ever had to write and produce a project on his own. It's been stressful because he would like to get enough clients on his own to enable him to stay at home permanently which means this one had to be good enough to keep them coming back. So I sat with him a couple of nights trying to play "assistant writer". Thankfully, they liked it!
Oh yeah, this was supposed to be about me wasn't it?
I am 36 years old and was born a raised in Southern California. I attended public school K through 3rd grade, private school 4th through 6th grade and then was brought home to finish out junior high and high school. This was back in the early '80's when it was all pretty new and I remember my parents coaching many families in the "how to's" of it all.
After I finished High School I took correspondence courses in fashion design for 3 years then theater arts for a year in community college.
I've had a few fun jobs in my time. I was a production painter for about a year ,which means that I hand painted collectible items that were sold at Disneyland. My best friend's Dad was in the resin casting business. He got the contract to cast the pieces and recommended his daughter and her friends to paint them. Our painting "studio" was in her garage in the mountains. So we painted all day while listening to the breeze in the oaks and the creek rushing by. Sounds rough, doesn't it?
I also co-taught high school drama in a christian high school ( with the same friend ) which was quite rewarding but only paid my gas money.
But my favorite job would have to be at Disneyland where I worked in the wardrobe department seasonally for almost 3 years. Believe it or not, I actually lived in my family's motor home in a campground across the street from the park (which is now the parking structure). I made a lot friends, suffered a few heartbreaks, got a lot of exercise and found a husband. He was a cast member in Fantasmic! and I was his dresser.
I had planned to marry someone from Disneyland since I was about 6 years old although I had intended to marry a guy from the Jungle Cruise but God chose a guy who dressed up in a bear suit instead. Hee,Hee. God always knows best!
We've been married now for 10 years and have two beautiful little boys. I'm blessed to have a husband who wants me to stay at home with them and can provide for me to do that. We live in Santa Clarita now which is just north of Los Angeles. That's right by Six Flags Magic Mountain for those of you who know where that is and yes, people DO live there!
Well, I hope I haven't bored you all too much and I promise it won't be so long before the next entry.
'Bye for now.

Jul. 20, 2008 Taking my first step
Here is my first foray into the World of Blog! I hope everyone will be patient with me as I figure out how all this works!
I am a stay at home wife and mother of two little boys. Ethan is 6 years old and Haakon (pronounced Hawk-un) is 3.
Ethan is my friendly, compliant, easy going child. He is very creative and musical and the things he can do with LEGOs amazes me. Lately it's been everything Indiana Jones, although he's never seen any of the movies. He just finished his first year of home school. He loves Bible, art, history and geography and wants to be an Imagineer or an archeologist. He also has plans to work for Disney cruise lines or at Disneyland like his Mommy and Daddy did.
Haakon is my wild child. He is very energetic, strong willed and independent. He is also a bit of a daredevil and I'm already beginning to worry a bit about the teenage years! We are often asked about the origin of his name. It is a Norwegian name (my great grandfather was from Norway) and would be pronounced something like Ho-kune if we were in Norway. But since we aren't in Norway we thought it would be easier to pronounce it Hawk-un. It is the name of many of the past kings of Norway as well as the current Crown Prince and means "hIgh son" and let me tell you ,he can definitely act like a high son!
My husband Jerry is a television editor and just finished his first week working at home in his new "cloffice" as we call it. We have a very large master closet and just converted it to half closet and half office.
Voila! Cloffice! It's going to take a few more weeks before we all adjust, especially the kids as they don't understand why Dad's home but they can't play with him. And of course, Jerry is used to spending time with other people all day. Still it's such a blessing right now with gas prices and commuting. We live just north of Los Angeles and his commute to Burbank everyday was 26 miles and an hour to an hour and a half each way. Now we can eat our meals as a family. and our car insurance just went down. Hurray!
I just realized that all I talked about was my family and didn't tell you anything about myself. I suppose most Mom's are like that though, aren't they? Well, I need to get myself to bed so I'll tell about myself in the next installment and hopefully my page will really look like something within the next week or so. I also hope that I can make it interesting enough that someone besides my mother will read it! Thanks Mom!!
Goodnight all. |
