• Dec. 1, 2008 - Thanksgiving Weekend

Posted By jaminacema
If I had eleven kids....I would need a BIGGER house!  LOL
Okay, the real house wasn't quite this crowded, but there were moments it felt like it was!

Here is the breakdown on our company this weekend:

This is my husbands youngest brother and his 3 oldest boys.  He is 10 years younger that us.

He also has a 3 month old (That we haven't met yet!!!!) who stayed home with mommy this weekend to avoid the mayhem.  (We are supposed to meet him in about 3 weeks when they are coming to visit again.  YAY!!!)  This brother spent A LOT of time staying with us in California when he was a teenager.  So in some ways he feels a little like our oldest child!  It is SO FUN that we now have kids all the same age and are living close enough together to see each other a few times a year.

This is my husbands middle brother with his 2 daughters.

This is my brother-in-law that was married to my cousin Jan who passes away almost 3 years ago.  The girls think it is SO cool that am I related to both their dad and their mom!  They laugh about me being their aunt and their second cousin.  We are trying to figure out a silly name to sum up the whole connection!  (Like Aunt-a-cousin or Cousin-Auntie.  We haven't hit on the right one yet!  LOL)

This is our niece with her 3 children. She is my husbands only sisters oldest child.  Her husband had to work over the weekend, so he didn't get to come.

Our niece lived with us for a year when she was 16 and we only had our oldest child, who was 4 at the time.  So she seems like one of our grown kids in a way too! We sure never dreamed back then that in 10 years we have all these kids near the same age!  You just never know how life is going to turn out!

This is another fun picture.  I like it because you can almost hear how LOUD they were being!  It was also taken early on in the weekend before my house was totally trashed.

This was taken Saturday night when we all went out to dinner.  Yep, a party of 16 eating out!  LOL
The restaurant we went to gets all the kids up to do the hokie-pokie!  Our gang LOVED that!

This was outside the restaurant after dinner.  I am pretty sure this was the only still moment the kids has all weekend!  I am not sure how I got them to stand so calmly for this shot!
Believe me it was short lived.

This was pretty funny.  My 14 year old convinced all the other kids that if they worked together they could blow the fire out in the fire pit!  This was a stroke of brilliance since children who are blowing don't make a lot of other noise!

This weekend brought back SO MANY fond memories for me since when I was growing up we spent every Thanksgiving weekend with all my cousins on my mom's side of the family at my aunt and uncles farm.  I thought of all those trips a lot over the weekend as I realized that I have no memory of who cooked, washed the dishes, made up the beds, etc, etc, etc!  My aunt always hosted a HUGE house full of family and made it look easy!  I definitely took her efforts for granted all those years! Now I feel honored to be the one with all the laughter and memory making taking place under my roof.  Yes, my house is trashed and I am exhausted.  But, that will all pass.  I hope that this is just the first of many such gatherings that we host at our house.

Although my 14 year old and I have decided we need to have the following sign made for our front door:

LOL, just kidding!  I am sure if more family shows up we will find a place to stack them somewhere!
It was a wonderful weekend!  YES, IT WAS LOUD!  But, it was worth the hearing loss to have so much family together!

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

• Nov. 29, 2008 - Thanksgiving

Posted By momanna98 in Holidays
We had a great Thanksgiving.  There was a total of 19 people.  Of course, 8 from my house and 8 from my sil's house, and you have yourself a crowd right there.
We had three tables lined up across my kitchen.  I can fit 19 people in my kitchen!!!  How cool is that?  In my old house, I could only fit the tiniest table, and since there were so many of us, it was pointless to even try and squeeze a table in there.  The white table was lengthwise while we were eating.  We only moved it to make more room from cleaning up.  Actually, only 18 fit at the tables.  Poor Lil' L was pushed off to the side.

We are enjoying desserts.  2 cheesecakes and pumpkin squares.

Lil L got to enjoy her second day of food.

After we were all stuffed and then able to moved away from the table, my hubby put on some old home videos.  We got to see my hubby and his sister when they were teens.  Hi-LAR-ious!  We had a great time laughing at those videos.  Now I want to look at some videos of when the kids were small.  I think I'll get out some of past Christmas'.  That should be fun.
I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving!

• Nov. 28, 2008 - The Surprise...

Posted By homeskoolmom in adoption

We are in the 1st trimester of an extremely high risk adoption.

Did you get that?  This is a very long shot.  But God is opening doors and we are committed to walking through them as long as they are open.  KAY is in one of the hardest countries to adopt from.  But our contact there has an excellent relationship with the "right" people... I don't want to mention the country at this point because I'm not sure I should.  But I will say this country is in Latin America... that gives you a wide variety to pick from but not the specific country.   One of the pluses, travel won't be near as difficult to this country as to Liberia.

KAY has what appears to be mild-moderate Cerebral Palsy and could greatly benefit from therapies that she can get in the U.S. that she will not get in her country.  When adoptions happen in this country, it seems that 5 years to get a child home is not out of the norm.  We don't want to wait that long, for many reasons, but right now she is young enough that we feel with the right help, she can lead a near normal life.

We have been trying to figure out how to make this work for about 2 months now.  But seem to have fewer answers now than we did when we started.  Isn't that the way it normally works?

Option 1-- pay lots of money to an agency that has never facilitated an adoption in this country, but is wanting to do so.

Option 2-- try doing this independently through their government agency.  We like Option 2 better at this point, but are working on both ends to figure out how to go about it through the proper channels.

So I know you're waiting for a picture.  Wait no longer...

Isn't she a cutie????  She is 5 weeks younger than Sweet Cheeks.  I have often thought there would be twins in our future... not sure we'll get much closer than this.  :)

It will be a HUGE miracle if this happens.  We would greatly appreciate your prayers for this process.  Also, please pray for Princess.  She has os wanted a sister old enough for her for a long time...  it is bothering her a little not to have that, again.

We are planning to travel to meet KAY in January.   I got my passport today.  Yippee-- it was fast.  One week and 1 after I applied at the post office.  We are hoping to meet with the Social Worker, Judge and Attorney in country when we go visit.

Again, it seems doors are opening, we're just not sure how to proceed.  We have been told that the "right" people want to see this happen too.  God's will, God's time, God's perfect plan...

• Nov. 28, 2008 - A Great Thanksgiving

Posted By momto4beauties

Well, our  Thanksgiving Day was great. Lots of family time!

I had to start the day before if I wanted to get everything done, as far as food. Being a gluten free family, most of what I have to make has to be made from scratch. Yes, I buy flour mixes for the different things, but then there is a lot of preparation after that. I found out last year, that I'd have to double up the pie crusts after making them since they are so thin and have the consistency of moon sand before being baked. No joke. I actually have to put them on wax paper, roll them out and then flip them over into the pie dish because they are too fine to pick up. So, I made those the day before to get them out of the way.

I also made my first attempt at homemade gluten free stuffing. Last year, I ordered a gf mix and made it. This year, I followed a gf recipe I found online at a gf site. I must say, this stuff beat last year's mix hands down! We ALL loved it! It rivaled the Stove Top we used to eat! Now that we have a good gf stuffing recipe, I can now make my pork chops & stuffing again! Woohoo! We've really missed that. I also found an awesome mix for dinner rolls & buttermilk biscuits! Again, a lot of preparation even with the mixes, but they are GREAT!!!

The turkey also turned out much better than the last couple of years. Instead of roasting it in the oven, like usual. I decided to put it in my electric roaster this year. I usually only use this for my pot roasts. However, I wanted everything to get done around the same time this year...so, the electric roaster freed up space in my oven to cook other things. Wow! I should have done this last year! It turned out terrific! And it held the juices so much better! Definitely doing this again next year. So much easier and tastier!

As a family, we all told what we were thankful for in the past year, as well as in general. It was wonderful to hear my girls give their own thanks instead of just us adults. They seemed to enjoy it as well. My hubby then led us in prayer to our Lord for all He has given us this year and the protection He provides for us daily, even when we don't notice it. I hope everyone else's Thanksgiving was just as wonderful as ours was.

• Nov. 26, 2008 - Fun Times

Posted By Kim in Family Fun

We have had a lot of fun the last month.  First up was our Family Fun Night at our church last month.  We had a chili/pie baking contest.  The kids can dress up if the want to.  Of course....most kids want to!  Lulu made two chocolate sundae pies.  They were yummy, yummy.  She won a prize they were so good!  It was a great evening of fellowshipping with our church family.

Lulu went as Princess Leonore from the Medieval Dinner Show.

Monkey went as Padmae when she married Annikan.

Lil went as SuperGirl!

Three very beautiful little girls if I do say so!!!

Next up on our fun list was a night out bowling.  We had never taken all three girls bowling before.  This was Lil's first time ever.  They all had so much fun.  Their Papaw is a big bowler and James used to be as well.  So needless to say they liked it.  They told their Papaw last weekend when James and I were away for the evening that they wanted to go bowling with him.

Last week we had our annual Thanksgiving Feast Day at co-op.  We love our co-op.  God has blessed our group with a terrific leader and with wonderful Christian families.  It is a strength to me to know that I have women at my fingertips that I can go to with questions and for support.  Anyway back to Feast Day... this year's theme was prairie days.  Since my girls love all things Little House on the Prairie this was perfect for them.  I managed to come up with dresses, aprons, and bonnets for all three.  (Not the best aprons and bonnets, but I tried)  We have several stations set up for the kids to travel to and learn about different aspects of living during that time period.

Lil was practicing a leaf rubbing.  They also did potato prints.

At this station the kids learned about living without electricity and all the luxuries we live with today.  They listened to a story.  How sweet that Lil is in Lulu's lap!

Here is Monkey at my station.  We talked about how hard it was to get food.  The kids got to crack corn, grind applesauce, and crack nuts.  Thanks to James, some of the boys even got to try their had at using flint and steel.

I hope everyone has a very blessed Thanksgiving.  I know that I will.  I am already extremely blessed.

• Nov. 26, 2008 - Black Friday sale with TOS!

Posted By Suzy Scribbles
My friend and fellow product reviewer from TOS, Heidi Straswer (Reviews by Heidi) sent this and asked me to spread the good news. It's such a good deal that I now wish I hadn't renewed my subscription last July! Wow! This is quite the savings! Read on . . .

The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine
is having an amazing sale on subscriptions during their annual Black Friday Sale November 26 – 30. For those 5 days only, they are drastically reducing their one-year subscription price to $7.95! That's the price you would usually pay for just one issue at a bookstore!

This is their lowest price ever on the magazine and they want all of you to take advantage of this offer and share the info with your friends.

Please don't miss out. Your one-year subscription will pay for itself time and time again as you receive practical tips and Biblical encouragement to keep going strong in your commitment to homeschooling and to the Lord. Since it's a quarterly magazine, they even have a monthly subscriber's only E-Newsletter called Teacher's Toolbox that will give you seasonal teaching ideas and a free E-Book download! It's like joining a unit study of the month club! The free E-Books alone are valued at almost $250/year. It's really perfect for people who are homeschooling on a shoestring or just wanting to add in some little extras to your teaching.

Plus during the Black Friday Sale, they have all kind of bonus gifts when you spend $50, $75, $100, or $150. Some are electronic downloads that you can download immediately, while other are physical products mailed from various vendors directly to your home.

AND, their Win Big Contest is going on so if you just happen to be customer 67,000, you will receive a prize package valued at almost $500 which includes a $150 gift certificate to the Schoolhouse Store! • Nov. 28, 2008 - Our Traditional Thanksgiving

Posted By jaminacema
Thanksgiving and tradition go hand in hand.  Here is what we are did for our Thanksgiving...

Our "tradition" is to be home for Thanksgiving.  My husband LOVES to cook and this one of his BIG days of the year!  Having lived 2000 miles from family up until this year it is normally just us for Thanksgiving.  Although we always welcome company!  Many years we have hosted friends and co-workers who had no other plans.  My kids really never know who to expect to show up for dinner on Thanksgiving.

This year for Thanksgiving day it was just us.  We ate our HUGE lunch at around 2:00 and then we went Ice Skating!  LOL  Ice Skating is a new tradition for us I suspect.  There is an ice skating rink at the mall near us and on Thanksgiving day they had a $5.00 special.  So we gave it a try and it was FUN!

Cute litle wall hugger!

Getting use to the ice.

A little help from daddy.

The agony of the feet! LOL

We had a great time skating and I am sure we will do it again next year if it's $5.00 again!

Today...the company will start to arrive.  This is who should be at our house by the end of today:

1 - wife (Me LOL)
1- husband
3 - of my kids
2 - of my husband brothers
3 - nieces
3 - nephews
1 - great niece
2 - great nephews

Total = 16!  5 of the above are adults.  One is a teenager, one is 10 and the rest are 8 and under! It is going to be LOUD!  LOL

We are very excited about all our company that is coming for Thanksgiving weekend.  This is one of the reasons we moved across country earlier this year.  My kids LOVE spending time with all their cousins.  It is SO fun to watch them all hanging out and enjoying each other.  I will hopefully have some great pictures to share on Monday!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

• Nov. 25, 2008 - Something's Broken

Posted By momto4beauties

Tonight I finished up my Thanksgiving shopping...that I know of. I think I'm all done. Should be all set for cookin'! I start tomorrow on my pies, as well as injecting my turkey with seasonings/juices from my recipe and will marinate overnight. I also took that lil trip to the docs office that I was avoiding for my finger. My mom had called earlier and asked how it was doing. For the most part it was getting a little better. I could actually move it more but stil hurt to grab anything. (yes, I can type cause I dont have to fully bend that finger) However, while I was talking with mom, I turned my finger sideways and looked at the sides of it. Not good. Both sides of my right ring finger were (and still are) dark bluish/purple. They were not that way yesterday or on Sunday afternoon when my 'accident' occurred. So, I talked myself into going to the afterhours clinic to have it checked out. While there, they x-rayed the finger and found that it is indeed fractured...but only a hairline. So, it will heal perfectly normal but will have to be careful til then. They gave me a splint for the underside of my finger, to keep it straight, but it doesn't have to be completely immobilized. I'm still deciding if it hurts more in or out of the splint. lol But I am thankful that it wasn't worse and the swelling has gone down almost completely. Good news!

UPDATE:  I received a call back from the afterhours clinic today (Wed).  They had another doctor and a radiologist look over my x-rays again. I not only have a hairline fracture radiating out from the knuckle and down, but a small shaving off of bone as well. Nice eh? They now want me to keep it in a splint as much as possible, but this really prohibits me from doing a lot of things with my right hand. So, I've been taking it off and on as needed.
