Posted in Home Education

Guess what my 12 yr old discovered.  Powerpoint!  I've often thought of teaching myself how to use this program but just hadn't done it yet.  Well he did.  I was really surprised at how easy it was to do.   He made up a short little slide presentation with pictures he made in our Paint program.

Hmmmmmm this has definite possibilities.

My sons have pretty much lost interest in notebooking.   I posted here before about that.  And this would be a pretty cool way for them to show what they are learning about.  Instead of a notebook page.  Get them to do a slide show.

We are reading about WW1 right now.

Step one- find some clip art related to the era.  I have Homeschool in the Woods Timeline figures that would probably work.  And I'm pretty sure they could do a search online.

Step two- add text for each picture.

Step three - find some music for that era.  Hmm this one might be more difficult.  Any ideas?

Step four- use powerpoint to put the slides and music together.

Ohhh I just thought of something.  There may be clips online of famous speeches that could be incorporated. However  as we are on dialup this one might not work for us.

It is also possible to add narration. This could count for speech.  We'll have to get a microphone.  Ours is lost in lala land.(anyone else have a lala land at thier house?)

Another option is to get together pictures of trips or field trips.  (thinking Oregon here)  and put together a slide show of our trip.  Ohhh how about a family slide show for grandma at Christmas!

Yep definite possibilities.

Okay, you mentioned WW1 and my ears perked up...Have you found any good books/resources for a 6th grader? Most are highschool level I've found. I'm VERY interested, as I want our unit study to be full. Any tips?

We have never done notebooking, and so far it hasn't sounded like something I thought would work for us, but ELECTRONIC notebooking -- now there's an idea! They love to play on the computer, so I think Powerpoint presentations would be a great idea. I probably still remember something about using it, although I haven't used it much since I became Mommy 8 years ago. Too, if I think DD8 can be fairly consistent about it, she can start a blog here.
Thanks for sharing!
God bless,
-Lori.

My 11 year old son is a mini clay sculpture fanatic. Using my digital camera he does speed shows of a multitude of pics of his clay animated movements, presenting a complete scene. After reading your post, I'm wondering if Powerpoint would be a good investment. DO the slide shows play ultra fast on powerpoint, to bring together a animated movie? I would like the kids to utilize the 'kids' computer for more than just computer games. thanks!

The thoughts and reflections of a mom who loves being at home, and is doing all she has ever desired in her life..... Really... I love my life that much!

"And all thy sons shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy sons.
In righteousness shall thou be established."
