Moving

Posted in Life

Hi!  Long time, no write for me.  I apologize for disappearing but life got busy and I haven't felt up to posting.  Part of the reason is the amount of time it takes for me to post pictures here so that has led me to look for another home for my blog.  I have moved over to Mahan School of Little Women   I am definitely liking the ease of uploading pictures there and some other features.  Stop by to say hello and thank you to those who have been faithful visitors here.

Have you been to Miami?

Posted in Life

We took a trip to Miami last weekend.  It was just the girls and I since Dh couldn't take anytime off from work right now.  We left on Wednesday and got back on Sunday.  I'm sure the question you are asking is " Why did you go?"  The main reason was the girls had their yearly C.A.R. state conference in Deerfield Beach.  A great secondary reason was to visit my SIL and her family, including the cute twins that are 1.5 years old now.  God had worked it out so that they were living down there while her husband worked a temp. job in one of the Miami hospitals.  They are actually coming home at the end of this week.

We drove down on Wednesday.  That is a long drive (5.5 hours not including the stops)  After we arrived, we took a walk over to the beach which was 1.5 blocks away.  The girls weren't really able to swim due to rough surf but they enjoyed playing in the sand and water edge.  Thursday was a trip to the Miami Metro zoo.  It was hot!!!  We didn't see too much of the animals because they were off in the shade laying still.  Friday morning was another trip over to the beach.  The girls didn't even get in the water that day because the surf was even rougher and we saw quite a few washed up Man of War jellyfish so we didn't want to take the chance of someone getting stung.  They had a great time building sand castles though!

Friday afternoon, we headed up to Deerfield for the conference which started that night.  We were all pretty busy as I was Sr chairman of Pages/Aides/Flag bearers, the twins were pages, Longlegged girl was our society flag bearer and Eldestof5 did everything else or at least it seemed like it.  She was running  for a state office so she had to give a campaign speech.  She did very well in spite of the fact she mistakenly said she had a daughter instead of a dog :-)  After the meeting, the children went to the beach to either play black light volleyball or fish off the pier.

Saturday morning was another meeting.  Both Eldestof5 and Longlegged girl had state chairman reports to give along with Eldestof5's society president report.  It was voted to just accept the nominated slate as elected since no office was contested therefore Eldestof5 is the new state organizing secretary!  After the meeting was free time and games on the beach.  That night was the awards banquet with the ball afterward.  All the girls and guys looked so nice in their dresses and suits.  We headed back to SIL's house late as Puddin' had stayed there.

Sunday came way too early for me as I hadn't gone to sleep until after 1:30 and Puddin', who was sharing a bed with me, woke me up around 7:30.  In addition, a rain storm had woke me up during the night.  I was apparently the only one in the house that had heard it and if it hadn't been wet outside, I would have thought I dreamed it.  We headed out by midmorning for home and I was, thankfully, able to make it home with lots of coffee.

I will try and post some pictures this week but I am playing catch up with everything and trying to keep up with keeping the house clean.  We have had 2 showings so far for which I am thankful.

3 years old!!

Posted in Life

Puddin turned 3 years old last Friday!  We find that hard to believe because she talks and acts like she has already been 3.  Grandparents came over on Thursday night for dinner and opening gifts.  We took the whole family, including Daddy, to Wild Adventures the next day.   She had a fantastic time and we finished with dinner with my mom.

Resurrection day pictures

Posted in Holidays

Better late then never.  Here are some pictures I took on Resurrection day.  I will use the one with the girls and I for our annual picture to show how we have changed over the years.  I had a wall with all of them from the last 13 years but I had to par it down to just 2 for the house showings.  I will also be using the picture of Puddin for her birthday picture this year.

New Camera

Posted in Life

Dh bought me a new camera, Canon Powershot S5IS.  We have been eyeing for awhile since my old camera began having trouble focusing after it was dropped.  I am really enjoying the camera and learning all the features.  My favorite is the color highlight.  I'll try and share some Easter weekend pictures soon!

This was taken in pitch black  - very impressed by the flash!

School update

Posted in Schooling

I figure it is time I give an update on our schooling since that is one of the reasons I started this blog.  We are a little more than halfway through our year due to breaks and hope to be able to take a break by the end of June.

Math - the girls are making progress here.  Eldestof5 has started MUS Pre-Algebra and is doing well despite her dislike for it.  She got a little behind due to our not schooling most of last summer but I hope to have her ready for Algebra by next fall.  Longleggedgirl is finishing up Fractions and has been challenged to make 100's on these last few lessons because her mistakes are mostly a lack of concentrating.  She has rose to the challenge so far.  The twins are making their way through division.  We have had to slow down with dividing the larger numbers but they are getting it.

English/Spelling - the twins are reviewing Phonics to help with their spelling.  We finished up the first book of Phonics Road and are now in the 2nd book.  I decided to continue with it because it also contains English and they were having problems with English for a Thoughtful Child.  They seem to need more instruction and practice.

Latin - Eldestof5 and Longleggedgirl are picking up Latin along with myself.  I am enjoying learning it with them; I just wish I had more time to study it.  We are starting Ch 10 of 14 so I need to decide whether to review or move onto Vol. 2 if we finish before our break.  I think it may be review to get the vocabulary more concrete before moving on.

Science - Eldestof5 is more than halfway through Exploring Physical Science from Apologia.  She is doing well and getting better at learning to study.  Daddy has had to help her with some of the physics modules though as that is not my strong point.  I look forward to Biology and Chemistry in the next 2 years!  I have not done much with the other 3 this year although I tried at the beginning of the year.  I may look into an actual curriculum for them to use next year although Longleggedgirl will start General Science in Apologia.

Tapestry - We are in Colonial America with Unit 3 of Y2.  We enjoyed our time study the renaissance and their artists but I enjoyed the most learning of the Reformation and the men who stood firm in their beliefs no matter the cost.  It will be neat to learn what is taking place in Europe at the same time America was being colonized.  Eldestof5 has already been making some connections that are neat to see.

Extracurricular - Longleggedgirl and Twin A are taking an art class through a local homeschool store.  They are loving it and learning some really neat techniques.  I will try and take some pictures of their work.  Eldestof5 and Twin B are getting ready to start volleyball through the Y.  That will last through the end of May.  We made the decision to not do swimming due to the cost and the time factor.  The girls have accepted the decision with good attitudes for which I am thankful.

Puddin' still enjoys playing and coloring during our school time.  She likes to pull out her chalkboard and say she is doing "school".  I am hoping to work with her with a little bit of structure soon but that is another post.

It's not February?!?

Posted in Life

Hmm?  I guess it has been awhile since I was on here.  I do have good reasons though.  One of the main ones is the house.  We have the kitchen basically done now.  The new countertop for the bar is up, the new pantry cabinet is in, cabinets scrubbed and refinished, walls painted and the floor grout is even scrubbed.  We also got the dining room painted and I am almost done refinishing the wood floor.  The master bathroom has a new cabinet which hubby had to cut out part of the countertop to put in.  Light fixture and faucet updating along with a good cleaning is still needed.

This is the new cabinet we put in.  The bottom shelves are pull outs.

The top color still looks pinkish in this picture but it is actually the same as what the kitchen is painted.

Another is we celebrated a milestone birthday for the twins.  They turned 10 on the 16th.  Instead of a big party, they asked for a trip to the mountains with a friend.  I found a cabin to rent and the 7 of us along with their friend, my mom and niece headed to the mountain.  We even met up with a fellow blogger and her family for lunch on Sunday.  We had hoped for snow but the weather didn't cooperate with us.

The last reason is sickness has caught up with us.  It started with Puddin in the mountains when she came down with a stomach illness.  She had gotten better when Eldestof5 and Dh came down with it.  As soon as they were better, Puddin came down with a fever this week for 3 days.  Anyone with young children know how fun that can be and it made it quite difficult to paint and clean floors holding a 2 year old.  Then she started on the mend and I got hit with a tickle in my throat on Thursday afternoon that was a full blown cough and fever by Friday.  I have been in bed most of today.  Twin 1 has it also.  Hopefully, it won't go any further.

Anyway, that was our February so now we will see what March will hold.  I will try to do better about posting!

Kitchen Renovation

Posted in Life

Wow!! That is what I said when I walked in last Thursday night.  I knew it was going to look different but I didn't know how much.  I LOVE the open feeling of it.  We have been putting some new lights in which have just added to the wow factor.  Hubby and the friend who did the work put up the pendant lights last night while I was at Bible study so that was neat to come home and see.  They are bright!!  Look here for the before pictures.

We also put in a new front door.  It is beautiful and makes a big difference.  When I got up the first morning, I thought someone had left the door open because of the amount of light coming down the hall.

2,380 miles is a loooong way!

Posted in Life

This is a big country and I can definitely say that Texas is the biggest!!  Last Wednesday, we spent the entire day in TX starting in El Paso and ending just past Houston.  I was very glad when we finally came to the LA line!! :-)

It was a good trip but not one that I want to take again without all of my family with me.  I really missed hubby and my girls and I think the feeling was mutual.

My mom and I had a good visit with my brother and even got to enjoy the San Diego zoo with him as he was delayed in leaving until Monday.  Of course, I am not sure where the actual animals are, the parking lot or behind the gates!

Our trip across country, while long, was great with some beautiful sights.  We didn't get to make any sightseeing stops but, if I ever go again, I will make sure there is time to.

I am thankful for the opportunity to go but even more thankful to be home safely with my loved ones.  Thank you for all the prayers!!

California, here we come!

Posted in Life

My mom and I are sitting at the airport waiting for our flight to Atlanta where we will then catch our flight to California.  We will hopefully arrive by 11:30 a.m. there.  My brother will pick us up and we will spend time with him until he leaves for Iraq which is scheduled for Saturday at this point.  Mom and I are then planning to leave Sunday or Monday to head back driving his truck with his dirt bike in the back.  We plan on taking 3 days to drive back.  Prayers for safety both flying today and driving back in hopefully good weather will be appreciated.

Please also remember dh and the girls as they take care of things at home.  We are having some kitchen remodeling done while I am gone since the girls will be gone part of next week at a grandparent's house.  I can't wait to see the result along with a new front door!  I will post some pictures after I get home.

Here are some pictures of before:

Turning 40 isn't so bad!

Posted in Life

Yes, I have entered a new decade today.  It was a great start to it also!  The girls woke me up singing "Happy Birthday" and then they got breakfast ready.  Nutty bars and yogurt with fresh strawberries along with coffee.  I also opened my gifts and received a necklace set, plaque that said "Faith, Hope, Love", a "Little Rascals" video, a starbucks cardand a warm fleece shirt with cardinals and  birdhouses on it from all the girls.  Dh gave me a Bluetooth to use with my phone.

I then relaxed for a short while before getting ready to go to lunch with a friend.  We had lunch at Olive Garden and then did some shopping at Target and Kohl's.  I found some holiday theme shirts for Puddin next year that were marked down to 50 cents!!  We also found some wrapping paper and other goodies for 29 cents!

On our way home, my friend started to pull into our church parking lot saying she needed to drop off some cups.  I believed her until I saw other cars and then my own car in the lot.  Surprise!!  DH had pulled off a surprise party and even got a DVD of pictures and old video put together for me!  He had been working on it since September and I had no clue.  It was a sweet time with family and friends.

I got more gift cards - mostly to Starbucks (think I am known as a coffee lover? :-) and now it looks like the Jacksonville Jaguars could top off the day by winning their first playoff game!!

Things are pretty much the same on the homefront.  We had 3 showings the end of December and New Years Day but nothing came from them.  We are officially off the market right now and deciding what to do before putting it back on in a few months.  I have 2 weeks before I leave for CA and much to still do in between.  I will try to pop in but I am still pretty much on a blogging break.

Taking a blogging break

Posted in Life

My life is crazy right now!  In addition to all the Christmas stuff like finishing wrapping gifts, I am flying out early Friday morning to D.c. with my mom for a quick weekend visit.  The main reason we are going is to see the cover they put over my dad's urn in Arlington.  We will be driving back with my youngest brother who left for there this morning to take care of some business.  Then when we get back it will be Christmas eve with my dh's father's side of the family and then my MIL comes in town for a few days after Christmas.  The weekend after is packed with C.A.R. and SS activities for the girls.

I need to do some school planning in the midst of all this so I can be prepared for a crazy January.  I will be flying to San Diego with mom on the 18th.  We will be helping my brother pack up his apt. and then seeing him off to Iraq.  We will then be driving his truck back to store for him.  I could be gone a week because we don't when he will actually be leaving. It will be sometime between the 20th and 23rd.

All of this to say, that I need to get some distractions out of my way for awhile.  I may be gone through January depending on how it goes.  I hope all that read this have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and the Lord blesses you as we enter another year!!

Eldestof5 turned 13 last Friday.  It is so hard to believe that she is in her teens now.  We had a sleepover with 6 girls.  It was after our church Christmas party. The next morning, we went to play miniature golf and laser tag.  I have to say, I really enjoyed the laser tag!!  We then had lunch of yummy hamburgers that dh made and the cookie tree I made.  It was a pain to put together but it was very yummy to eat.  Enjoy the pictures!

Middle of December already??!!??

Posted in Life

Where has the time gone?  I can't believe it is already the middle of December.  I have wanted to post many times but I have barely been keeping my head above water.  We started the month in St Augustine with the C.A.R.  We had a great time dressed up as colonials for the British Night Watch.  The following week was very busy with Christmas shopping, attending a Gingerbread Extravaganza, celebrating St Nicholas Day and then traveling west to Lake City with my mom to lay flowers on my Pop-Pop's grave.  It had been 11 years since his death on 12/7 and putting flowers on his grave was something my father always did.  We also visited with my aunt and her family in the area.

Saturday was busy with a D.A.R. meeting, ensemble practice to sing on Sunday and dh's work party.  That was very nice as it was held at the TPC clubhouse in Sawgrass.  The food was awesome and everyone was dressed so nicely.  This week has been a little quieter so we finally got school finished up.  Well, almost as I still have to take my Latin test but I have been busy making a cookie tree today.  You will have to check in after tomorrow to find out why :-)

I have some pictures I want to post so I will try and do that tomorrow or this weekend.

Thanksgiving weekend

Posted in Holidays

We enjoyed a great Thanksgiving weekend.  It began with dinner at a church family's house.  This was a special treat for us because we are usually with family for the holiday.  We enjoyed lots of yummy food, some of which Pudding helped to put together
along with Daddy   We also enjoyed some fun games which caused us to be up really late.

We went camping on Friday with a little of a later start than desired.  We decided to eat a big lunch early and then snack for dinner.  We told the girls we were going shopping since our campground was right down the road from the outlet mall.  Instead we pulled into the parking lot for Wild Adventures. The girls were speechless.   They were double excited after I explained that it was an early Christmas present of year passes.

We had a ball and Pudding was a hoot.  She wasn't fazed by a single ride we put her on, including the Pharoah's Fury (big ship that swings back and forth really high)  She was in the middle section with Dh and I.  Her giggles on the small roller coasters were just precious.  By Saturday afternoon, she had learned the names of some of the rides and was asking to ride them.  The older girls were very sweet in that they wanted to make sure she was able to ride lots.  That is one of the things I love about Wild Adventures - they have lots of rides for little ones (around 36" tall) and they are spaced through out the park so it makes it easy to ride the bigger rides.

Twin 1 and Twin 2 rode the Boomerang which is an upside down roller coaster that also goes backward and Longlegged girl rode the Hangman which is an upside down roller coaster where your feet hang down.  That will be nice to have some company on those rides when it is just the girls and I going.  Eldestof5 is not interested at all!  She did give the Cheetah (wooden roller coaster) a try but had a headache the rest of the day due to it.

We headed home Sunday after doing some shopping at the outlet mall that was near our campground.  It was a great weekend!

Veteran's Day Parade

Posted in Holidays

We participated in the local Veteran's Day Parade on Monday with the girls' C.A.R. group.  Dh drove the truck, pulling my mom's trailer.  Eldest and Longlegged carried flags while my nephew and myself carried muskets as we walked.  The twins and my niece rode on the trailer and my mom was in the back of the truck.  I guess you could say it was a family affair :-)

Boom!

Posted in Life

We actually heard 2 booms this afternoon and they shook the house.  I was sitting at the kitchen table finishing lunch and immediately started asking where everyone was because I thought maybe someone had hit a wall really hard.  Nope, they were all in the schoolroom except Eldest who was in the front room on the computer.  I went and checked all the bedrooms to make sure nothing had fallen through the roof.  Since I saw no damage, I headed outside, after putting on a jacket due to the   pretty chilly wind today.  I didn't see anything on the roof and then it dawned on me.  "What time is it?", I asked Eldest and ran into the house to find a news website on my computer.  Sure enough, my conclusion was correct - we had heard and felt the sonic booms of the space shuttle reentering the atmosphere!  Neat!  We enjoyed the experience of watching it make it's landing here in FL via the internet.

I did make it home!

Posted in Life

We made it home from PA last Sunday night.  We had a nice time and I enjoyed meeting up with some of my e-mail friends which was the main purpose for the trip.  On the way to the airport Sunday, I learned that one of my cousin's lost her husband in an accident that morning.  As a result, I was only home on Monday and then left Tuesday morning with the girls and my mom to go show support to my cousin and aunt.  We stayed until after the funeral Friday and got home that evening.  I was wiped out from being on the go for over a week and the emotions of the funeral.  My sweet hubby let me sleep in Saturday morning and I have spent the rest of the weekend resting up.  An extra hour last night didn't hurt either!  I am ready to try and get back to a regular routine around here so we will give it a go in the morning.

Arrived!

Posted in Life

It was a crazy day but we finally made up here to PA.  We didn't land in Philly until 7 p.m. and then one of the ladies that was riding with us didn't land until 8 so it was awhile before we got on the road to our final destination.  Trying to find an open restaurant at 10 p.m. was not fun but we finally found one.  We didn't get to the hotel until almost 1 a.m. so we were dragging this morning.  I feel even worse for the WA ladies after the crazy day yesterday.  We are off to do some touring of the beautiful countryside!

Posted in Life

I am sitting here at the JAX airport waiting to get on dh and my flight to PA.  We were suppose to be on board and in the air as of this moment but we have been delayed due to weather.  We have an almost 2 hour wait but there is the possibility of a window opening to get us going sooner.  I am praying for that but resting in the Lord if we are to wait.  I'm going to go catch up on my blog reading due to this delay.  See there is some good out of it

Trains, Cars and Garage Sales

Posted in Life

I'm here.  Things have just been busy and me time on the computer is very little these days.  It took me 2 weeks to get pictures from the end of our Middle Ages study downloaded and posted.  I just can't figure out where the time is going.  I need about 5 more hours in a day!

We had a garage sale this weekend.  It was mostly to try and sell some of my dad's collectibles, specifically the trains and cars.  A close friend heard about the sale and asked if she could bring some stuff over also which just made it more fun! :-)  We got about a third of the trains out of storage and my mom's attic.  Dh and I tried to find as many selling prices as we could for them but we are going to invest in a good train collectible book.

The sale itself went very well.  My friend and I sold almost all of our items and my mom was able to sell some of the collectibles.  We made a good couple of hundred dollars and my mom even earned enough for her trip over Thanksgiving to spend time will all her sisters.  We ended up buying my friend's loft bunk bed set for the twins' room.  I had been wanting to get rearrange their current bed set up, which is a daybed with a trundle always out, to make the room look a little bigger.  We are going to move the daybed to our school/play room and the piano from that room to the front room after mom is able to take her hope chest we have in the front room now.  We just have to stain the loft bed first because it is a light wood and their dresser is a dark wood.  Dh already did part of it and it is looking very nice.  I will post some pictures after we finish up.

Things have been slow with the house showings.  We actually haven't had any this month.  We did do some updates and are going to do a slight price drop.  A few people picked up fliers during the sale so maybe we will get a showing soon.

If I don't get a chance to get back on, I will be gone for a long weekend trip with dh this coming week.  We fly out on Wed. and will be back late Sunday.  The girls will be with grandmothers.

Year 2, Unit 1 of TOG

Posted in Tapestry of Grace

We finished up Unit 1 of Y2 in Tapestry.  Our studies in the Middle Ages was interesting.  We met knights fighting the crusades, feudalism and the corruption of the church authorities as part of the result, castles and wars over thrones.  Vikings invaded and Joan of Arc saved France.  As we leave the Middle Ages, we see God preparing hearts for the Reformation.

We enjoyed a celebration of our time in the Middle Ages by enjoying a trip to Medieval Times in Orlando.  It was a great time seeing some of the things we had studied played out before our eyes.  Below are some pictures of our time there.  Click on the album for more pictures.

Rain Gone, Teeth Also

Posted in Life

We have been rain free for 2 days now!  The ground is still saturated though as was evident while I was mowing today.  I am glad to have gotten the grass mowed although I wish I could have done it before our open house this past weekend.  We did have one family come by so that was good.

We recently started with a new dentist for the girls.  We all really love her.  I love that she isn't pushing braces but wants to wait until all the permanent teeth are in.  In light of that, she did recommend both Eldestof5 and Longleggedgirl have some teeth removed so that the permanent teeth could, hopefully, come in straight.  Longleggedgirl had hers done 2 weeks ago and did well.  Eldest needed 1 extra pulled than her sister.  Hers took place today and she did well also.  The funny thing is it is the same teeth they had pulled so their smiles are similar.  I will get a picture and post it.  Thankfully, the twins teeth are doing great so far and everyone is cavity free.

This is my place to describe our family as we walk the journey of homeschooling and grow in the Grace of Christ Jesus as a family.
