Nov. 6, 2008 - Rime to Read Review
Having taught 6 kids to read already, I just assumed my 7th child would be just as easily taught. Wrong answer. Although she remembers most of the letter sounds, she just hasn't been able to put words together. I've used many different methods to teach her how to read and up until now, she has been unable to. Unfortunately, she has epilepsy and because it mainly affects the left side of her brain, it has caused her to have learning difficulties. We have since changed her AED (Anti-Epileptic Drug) and that has helped the spikes. I've also been introduced to Rime to Read. Rime to Read is a program for beginning readers that uses color-coded, short vowel words to makes rimes (word families). For instance, they use Pat, sat, & rat in book 1. If your child is having difficulties, you (or they) can click on the color-coded word and it will be read aloud to them. (Not the whole book, just the word.) Because the books are online, you can either read them on your monitor or print them out, or both!
There are a total of 20 books. You can get your first book for free by clicking here.
I have been very pleased with Rime to Read. I'm excited that my daughter has finally read something! (She's 6.) The books are short enough to keep her attention, yet long enough for her to have success at reading.
