Redeeming the time....

Ephesians 5:15-16 says "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."  Now...I know that the verse speaks of watching how we live and using our time wisely to share the gospel, etc.  But I believe that it applies to family life as well.  Sometimes as homeschoolers we can get so bogged down with math, phonics, Latin.....whatever it may be, and thinking "Oh, I have to get this done and then we have to do that..."  While it is true that we do have to work diligently at teaching our children both acdemics and Godly character, sometimes it's nice to just enjoy them as children!  So that's what I've been making more of an effort to do lately.  Instead of always being to busy to do things with them because I have clean this or plan that, I have purposed in my heart to do more of the fun stuff that mothering requires!  We will never get these moments back and one day when they are all grown, we don't want to be left wishing we would have spent more time with them......time doing something other than drilling math facts and Latin chants!  So here are some pictures of our days lately.  Monday we had wonderful spring time weather here in NC and we took advantage of it!

Keepers at home.....

Fridays around here are somewhat more relaxed as far as "school" time goes.  We tend to do more housekeeping tasks and focus on what we like to call "home-ec"...lol.  Having four girls, I've come to realize the importance of allowing them to help with all the tasks involved in keeping a home, even the youngest.  It takes more time and patience of course, but it is a necessary part of training our daughters.  It's something I could have used more of growing up!  I left home not knowing how to do much more than boil water and don't want that to happen to my children.  Well trained daughters will be such a blessing to their husbands and children!  Of course the two boys get in on the action too sometimes....especially on days like yesterday when we made oatmeal cookies.  Letting them help from an early age gets them into the habit of doing these things and then you don't have to "force" them when they are older.  Now that is something I wish I would have known when my oldest two were little.....but I thank the Lord for revealing this tid-bit to me and I'm intent on making the change.

So, I encourage other moms to do the same.  Yes it takes longer to get things done, and yes making cookies will be messier than doing it yourself.  But just give it a try....after all they are only little for a short time.  Another thing that we moms have to remember when doing this is to do it with a cheerful heart!

"That they [the older women] may teach the young women to be sober, to love their
husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good,
obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."
- Titus 2: 4, 5

Quiet time....

There isn't much quiet time in our home.  Right now, my youngest son is asking for chicken nuggets, my 5 yo daughter is asking me what 5 + 8 is, the baby is pushing chairs around the kitchen trying to get things off the counter, and the other three are doing various tasks!  Most days are usually a whirlwhind of activity.  Don't get me wrong.....i'm not complaining.  There is nothing like the sound of children playing, laughing, splashing in the tub, and yes even screaming and arguing!  I wouldn't trade this hectic season of my life for anything.....after all it is part of the Lord's plan for my life, and what can be better than that?

Quiet time...there is another kind of quiet time that we homeschool moms long for - time with our precious Lord and savior.  I often wonder if it is as hard for other moms to get that precious time in as it is for me?  When I plan to have my quiet time early in the morning, the baby will decide to wake up extra early.  Or maybe the other children will start bickering if I try to wait until I have them settled eating breakfast.  While I think actually getting the time in is very important, I've come to realize that the Lord will bless the EFFORT to meet with him, even if we get interrupted!  He's a good God, and I couldn't make it through even the best homeschool day without Him!
