Friendship

Posted in Food for Thought

I don't know if the following story is true or not, but it's message is too powerful NOT to share!

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.  His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books.

I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?  He must really be a nerd.'

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.  They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes

My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.  As I handed him his glasses, I said, 'Those guys are jerks.'    They really should get lives.

' He looked at me and said, 'Hey thanks!'   There was a big smile on his face.  It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.  I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.   As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.  He said he had gone to private school before now.  I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.  He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.   I asked him if he wanted to play a little football  with my friends
He said yes.

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my    friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.  I stopped him and said, 'Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!   ' He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends..   When we were seniors we began to think about college.   Kyle decided on Georgetown and I was going to Duke.  I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.  He was going to be a doctor and I was going for business on a football scholarship..

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.   I teased him all the time about being a nerd.  He had to prepare a speech for graduation.   I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak

Graduation day, I saw Kyle..   He looked great.   He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.   He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.  Boy, sometimes I was jealous!  Today was one of those days.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech.  So, I smacked him on the back and said, 'Hey, big guy, you'll be great!'   He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.  ' Thanks,' he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began  'Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.   Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...   I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.  I am going to tell you a story.'

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the first day we met.   He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.   He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.  'Thankfully, I was saved.   My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable..'   I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.   I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.   Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions..   With one small gesture you can change a person's life.   For better or for worse.

God puts us all in each others lives to impact one another in some way. Look for God in others.

'Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.'  There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.   Tomorrow is a mystery.   Today is a gift.

Christmas Without Jesus

Posted in Food for Thought

Christmas Without Jesus

Christmas without Jesus,

And all that the Saviour hath wrought;

Can you begin to comprehend

Why I just cannot bear the thought?

Christmas without Jesus,

Means more than an empty manger,

Or a wasted trip for wise men,

On a road of untold danger.

Christmas without Jesus,

Means more than a tree with no gifts;

More than no holiday fixings,

Or no extra-overtime shifts.

Christmas without Jesus -

What does it all really mean?

What impact does it have for me,

My life, my hopes and my dreams?

Christmas without Jesus

Means my sin debt, by me, still is borne.

It still has never been paid for,

For His body had never been torn.

Christmas without Jesus

Means Heaven cannot be attained;

We’ve all sinned; there’s no remedy.

Our good works are useless and vain.

Christmas without Jesus

Means an eternity of pain;

No hope for all mankind was brought.

without Christ’s loss, we have no gain.

Christmas without Jesus,

Oh no! It simply cannot be!

But praise the Lord! I know it’s not!

He came to die for you and me!

Christmas with Jesus -

My Saviour’s alive forevermore!

He arose victorious from the grave,

And He has opened Heaven’s door.

Christmas without Jesus-

A fairy tale, an empty show.

For Christ came to pay for our sin -

It’s real! I want the world to know!

Jesus is Better Than Santa

Posted in Food for Thought

With 3 weeks before Christmas REMEMBER:

 Jesus is Better than Santa

Santa lives at the North Pole.

JESUS is everywhere.

Santa rides in a sleigh

JESUS rides on the wind and walks on the water.

Santa comes but once a year

JESUS is an ever present help.

Santa fills your stockings with goodies

JESUS supplies all your needs.

Santa comes down your chimney uninvited

JESUS stands at your door and knocks.. and then enters your heart.

You have to stand in line to see Santa

JESUS is as close as the mention of His name.

Santa lets you sit on his lap

JESUS lets you rest in His arms.

Santa doesn't know your name, all he can say is "Hi little boy or girl, What's your name?"

JESUS knew our name before we did. Not only does He know our name, He knows our address too. He knows our history and future and He even knows how many hairs are on our heads.

Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly

JESUS has a heart full of love.

All Santa can offer is HO HO HO

JESUS offers health, help and hope.

Santa says "You better not cry"

JESUS says "Cast all your cares on me for I care for you.

Santa's little helpers make toys

JESUS makes new life, mends wounded hearts, repairs broken homes and builds mansions.

Santa may make you chuckle but

JESUS gives you joy that is your strength.

While Santa puts gifts under your tree

JESUS became our gift and died on the tree.

It's obvious there is really no comparison.

We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about.

We need to put Christ back in Christmas.

Jesus is still the reason for the season.

May the Lord Bless and Watch over you and your loved ones this Christmas 2008

And may He prosper and bless the work of your hands in the New Year.

Encouragement for Today

Posted in Food for Thought

I receive Daily Devotions from Proverbs 31 Ministries.  I don't always take the time to read them, but today's title caught my eye, so I decided I would take the time to read it.  Boy, am I glad I did!  Read it for yourself, and I pray that it will be a blessing to you as it has been to me!

I Can’t Believe My Husband Feels Dishonored
 Renee Swope

“Then when the king's edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm,

all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest."

Esther 1:20 (NIV)

Devotion:

My son Andrew was having a rough afternoon; he was tired, he’d been disappointed by a friend and he had homework. He tried to hide the tears dripping down his cheeks as he gritted his teeth and completed his worksheet.

My husband JJ was sitting across the room watching football, occasionally glancing over at our son and me. I thought about something fun JJ could do with Andrew to cheer him up. Then I thought about how it would encourage Andrew if his dad recognized he was upset and "engaged" with him.

That wasn't happening. So, I invited JJ into the situation by suggesting he turn off the TV and come talk with Andrew. At this point, I was not thinking very honoring thoughts towards my husband. It got messy. JJ felt insulted. I felt frustrated. Finally JJ said, "Tell me what you want me to do."

So I did. Andrew loved my idea to go do something fun with his dad. In minutes, his homework was done. His tears were gone, and so was my husband. JJ was very frustrated. It wasn’t because he had to miss football. It wasn’t even what I said. It was how I said it. He felt dishonored by the timing and tone of my words. I couldn’t believe he felt dishonored. I felt so misunderstood!

I calmed down and thought more about what had happened. I remembered that JJ’s preference is for me to call him into another room away from our kids when I don’t agree with him. He’s also asked me to share my thoughts in a non-critical tone. It was very hard to admit, but I knew God wanted me to honor my husband's perspective and preferences.

Just a few months ago God had taught me the importance of honoring my husband through the story of Esther. Esther was chosen by the king to be his new wife because his first wife, Vashti, dishonored him. The king’s advisers insisted the king remove the queen from her throne because they were afraid her decision to dishonor the king would influence other wives to dishonor their husbands.

That passage reminded me that, although I may not influence a whole kingdom, my daily decisions are far-reaching. As wives, our words, actions and attitudes towards our husbands influence many. We influence the kind of women our sons will marry. We influence how our daughters will speak to their husbands. We influence how our friends might talk to their husbands after hearing how we talk to ours.

So, now I had the opportunity to apply this truth to my marriage. I have to admit it wasn’t easy. My pride insisted that I had the best of intentions. I thought so highly of my husband that I wanted him to be the one to speak into Andrew's hurts and right whatever was wrong.

Maybe Vashti had good intentions. Maybe she was trying to prove what seemed like a good point, but it lead to her downfall.  Whatever the case, a bigger point was proven: a wife’s influence is far reaching when she dishonors her husband.

I couldn’t change what I’d done that day. But I could change how it was impacting my little kingdom. With God’s help I told JJ, "I'm sorry for dishonoring you," and I said it in front of my sons. My pride was hard to swallow, but it went down a little easier knowing that honoring my husband honors God, and also influences my sons who I hope will one day look for wives who will honor them, too.

Dear Lord, I want to be a woman who honors my husband, but it’s hard when that means giving up my desire to be right. Help me to honor You, my husband and others in my thoughts, actions, words and decisions. I pray that my life would have a Godly influence on those around me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
