Homeschool Memoirs: #4 Something New

Posted in HomeSchool Memoirs

THEME

Planning your homeschool is a lot of fun, especially if you’re going to be trying something new. Just like finding a shiny new penny you’re excited to use it. Mother Dear has been planning some new curriculum for us, and I am plenty excited to get started on it. This week I hope you’ll share something new you’re using, why you’ve decided to use it, and if you have used it how you like it. Make sure to include the publishing information and where you got it from so others can look into if they like.

Well, most of what we are using this year is new to us!  We have switched from a "pre-packaged" Curriculum (ABeka), and this year we are going with a variety of different things.

Apologia General/Physical Science (www.highschoolscience.com/store/)

Mystery of History (www.themysteryofhistory.com/)

Considering God's Creation (www.eagleswingsed.com/products/cgc.html)

Wordly Wise 3000 (wordlywise3000.com/)

Saxon Math (saxonpublishers.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/saxonmath_home)

I decided to use these different resources because I had heard through the "grapevine" how wonderful these books are, so I thought I would give them a  try!  Hopefully they will work well for our family!

Homeschool Memoirs: #3 Routines

THEME

I hope last week’s theme helped you get a bigger view and maybe some ideas about different ways to homeschool or curriculum. There is so much to share and so I hope this helped, especially the new homeschoolers, narrow things down a bit. I am sure some of you are still getting into your homeschool routines. I know some people are very routine oriented while others may be more “day-by-day”, and it all depends on your family and what works best for your life-style. This week please post what your planned homeschool routine is. The theme banner should give you some ideas on how to do that. I had fun making that and adding in real info (except for the times! lol).

Schedules terrify me ~ because I am so lousy at following them!  LOL!

I have made a "schedule" up for our Homeschool year, but I know that I will probably have to "tweak" it a bit until it fits us just right!  So here is what I am hoping to do, starting Monday morning!

6:00 ~ Mom rise and shine (you Ladies who get up at 5:30, I applaud you!)

7:00 ~ kids up/ dressed/ make beds

7:30 ~ Breakfast/ tidy up/ brush teeth

8:00 ~ Personal Bible Reading

8:15 ~ finish getting ready for school to begin at 8:30

8:30 ~ Bible

9:00 ~ Math

10:00 ~ Grammar

11:00 Science

12:00 ~ Lunch and cleanup

1:00 ~ Geography

1:30 ~ History

2:00 ~ Spelling/Literature

2:30 ~ done for the day (hopefully! :0)

Homeschool Memoirs: Agendas

Posted in HomeSchool Memoirs

Click on picture to read more

This week’s theme is about sharing your 2008-09 homeschool agendas and plans. You’ve been preparing your plans for sometime and you’re ready to go. Or you’re still in the planning-stage and need some inspiration or tips on what to use. Because many use different curriculum and methods there is always something new to be gleaned from other homeschoolers. It’s always fun and interesting to see what other’s are using and the WWWWH as Robin Sampson suggests. So this week I hope you will share what you’re doing this year for your homeschool agenda. Share the different curriculum you’re using. You can also include what age/grade you’re using it for, how long you’ve been using it, and why you like it.

Please share a Bible verse that has encouraged you or inspired you during this planning-process, and how.

Hmmmm ~ I thought these assignments were supposed to be fun!  LOL  just kidding!

I have used strictly ABeka in the past, and even though I love the curriculum, it didn't work all that well for me.  I found it was way more than I could handle with three children in three different grades.  So this year, I thought I would change things up a bit.  We are going to use a variety of different sources for our schooling.

My children are in grades 9, 7, and 5 this year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My oldest son (Gr. 9) :
Math ~ Saxon Algebra 1
Science ~  Apologia Physics
Geography ~ World Geography
History ~ American History (even though we are Canadian I thought it might be useful to learn about our American friends),
Spelling/Vocab ~ Wordly Wise 3000,
Literature ~ various Novel Studies,
Grammar ~ ABeka
Bible ~ a study on Proverbs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Daughter (Gr. 7) ~

Math ~ Saxon 87

Science ~ Apologia General Science

Geography ~ World Geography

History ~ Mystery Of History

Spelling/Vocab ~ Wordly Wise 3000

Grammar ~ ABeka

Bible ~ study of Proverbs

Literature ~ ABeka

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My youngest son (Gr. 5)
Math ~ Saxon 65
Science ~ Considering God's Creation
Grammar ~ ABeka
Geography ~ Unit study on the Canadian Provinces as well as Maps, geography, etc. of Canada
History ~ Mystery of History
Spelling/Vocab. ~ Wordly Wise 3000
Literature ~ ABeka
Bible ~ short study of each book of the Bible
As far as a verse goes, I will have to think on that.  I don't really have one right now.
It's All About Me
This week, we want to hear about YOU. The author behind the words. The Momma behind all the homeschooling kiddos. Just write up something about you, your family, and your home. How long you’ve been homeschooling and why you decided to homeschool. It doesn’t have to be anything lengthy at all, but we’d love to hear it! You might include a family photo too!
Hello!  My name is Kim and I live in beautiful Nova Scotia, Canada, with my husband Andrew and our three children ~ Nathan, Emily, and Ben.  We have homeschooled off and on over the past few years.  I homeschooled my oldest son until the end of Grade 3, and my daughter until the end of Grade 1.  Then all three of my children attended a local Charistian School for grades 4, 2, and K5.  They attended that school for three years, and then returned home for the following year.
To say that things did not go well during our year of Homeschooling is an understatement!  Nothing went right!  I was not focused (or committed) enough to make the year a success.  The kids did not and would not apply themselves.  Soooo, the whole year ended as a failure.  Instead of repeating another disasterous year, we enrolled them in the Christian School once again this past year.
Part of the reason for the difficulties we faced was due to the Curriculum we were using.  I LOVE the Curriculum, it just didn't love us!  I found it to be too much for one person to try and teach three different grades.
We are planning on Homeschooling our children again this year, and hopefully (and prayerfully) with the Lord's help, things will go better!  I am trying a new aproach to our schooling.  Instead of a particular Curriculum, I am going to draw from a variety of different sources.  Mix things up a little.  My children are in Grades 9, 7, and 5 this year!  YIKES!!!!!  I must be crazy!!!!  Please Lord, you HAVE to help me!    I am looking forward to a new year, and then at the same time I am terrified of it as well!  If you think of us, please pray for the Lake family!
I look forward to getting to know you all in the upcoming months!
