One Proud Momma

Posted in Homeschool Thoughts

As some of you may know (and for those who don't) my children returned to our local Christian School this year.  Homeschooling was not working for us.  Well, I should say the Curriculum we were using was not working for us.  So hubby and I prayed and the Lord led us to enroll our children in K.B.C.A  once again.

I was a little nervous putting them back in school.  I was afraid that they would be way behind, and they would have a lot of catching up to do.  We didn't finish nearly as much as we should have last year.  It just got to the point where everyone was frustrated, and no mater what we did, nothing seemed to go right!  So enough was enough, and we stopped school the first week in May.  So, with a little hesitation, the kiddies headed off to school in September.

My children found it a little difficult getting back into the routine of school, but appeared to adjust rather quickly.  They enjoy being back with their friends, and the structure of the classroom setting.  The school they attend is VERY small ~ 17 students in the whole school (gr. K-5 through 12).  Because of it being so small in number, the students get along very well with everyone, big or little.

Well, anyway, yesterday was report card day.  My children all made the Honor Roll!!!!!  Woohoo!!!!  I was so proud of them!  They worked their little tails off, and made the Honor Roll.  I was worrying all day (yes, I tend to worry on occasion LOL!) that they would come home with less than favorable reports, but I was pleasantly surprised.  It just reaffirms to me that hubby and I did the right thing by putting them back in school.  I was so afraid.  Thank you Lord for your goodness and your guidance!

Change in Plans!

Posted in Homeschool Thoughts

I was going to Homeschool my children this year, but our plans have changed. They will be attending the local Christian School instead. This was a last minute decision, but one hubby and I are pleased with. Our children have attended this school in the past, and have done really well, and I am sure that they will this year as well.

I have been struggling with the whole Homeschooling thing for awhile.  Public School was not really an option for us, but Homeschooling hasn't been going all that well either.  Some friends of ours gently reminded us how important education is to our children and that sometimes we should be willing to make sacrifices for them.  GULP!!!  Maybe these reminders were not so gentle after all!

Our oldest son is going in Grade 8 this year, and I have been worrying that I may not be able to provide him with everything that he may need in the future.  So the decision to put the kids back in Christian School, was partly made to benefit Nathan,  and will definitely benefit the other two as well.

It is taking me awhile to change my way of thinking. I was all set to homeschool my kids, and now I don't have to. It will be different not having them home everyday. I won't know what to do with myself. I am hoping to find a babysitting job to help pay for school. We shall see. I know that God will provide.

P.S.  Hi Cindy!!!!  (I guess you found me! LOL!!!!)

Homeschool Open House 2007

Posted in Homeschool Thoughts

Tiany is hosting a Homeschool Open House.  Hop on over to her site and check out all the details!  There are even prizes to be won!!!

O.K.  Now a little bit about me.  I started homeschooling my oldest son (who will be 13 in Sept.) back in 1999 ~ he started Kindergarten.  I homeschooled him until the end of grade 3, and his younger sister ~ til the end of Grade 1.  The next year, all three of my children went to the local Christian School (Nathan ~ Gr. 4, Emily ~ Gr. 2, and Ben ~ started K-5.  They attended this school for two and a half years after which I brought them home, and homeschooled them again (due to lack of finances to keep them in school).  After completing this year, I decided it was time for a Curriculum change.

We had been using ABeka (which I think is an awesome program!), but I felt it was time for a change.  I was having difficulty keeping up with all that was required to make ABeka work properly.  In my opinion, for ABeka to be used properly, it needs to taught like in a classroom setting.  I just didn't have time to teach three children, three different grades (7, 5, and 3), and all the different subjects that they had.  So this year I am taking the "eclectic" approach to homeschooling and will be using a variety of different books and combining some of the subjects with all three children.  Hopefully this appraoch will work better for all of us!

Right now, I don't know what our "homeschool" day is going to look like, but I hope to have a schedule made up that will not be too difficult to follow!  I do not find homeschooling easy, and to be honest, sometimes I dislike it very much, but right now there is no other option.  So, if any of you have any suggestions on scheduling, etc. please ~ do not hesitate to share your ideas.

So anyway, just a little bit of info about me and my children.  Nathan is in Gr. 8 this year, Emily ~ Gr. 6, and Ben ~ Gr. 4

They're Here!!!

Posted in Homeschool Thoughts

Yeah!!!!  The rest of my school books arrived today!  Now I can start making plans for School in the Fall.  This is a bit new to me ~ using a mixture of things for our schooling.  We have used ABeka in the past, but I have found that it doesn't really work for me.  Don't get me wrong - I LOVE ABeka, but it was just a little more than I could handle.  Teaching three children, in three different grades is a little more complicated than I thought it would be.  Maybe if they were all in elementary grades it would be easier, but when on of your children is in Gr. 8 and is almost a TEEN-AGER (YIKES!!!), it makes it a bit more difficult.  Soooo, I thought I would change things up a bit this year, and try something different.

This is what we are using this year:

Math ~ Saxon 54, 76, and Algebra 1/2

Science ~ Considering God's Creation (Gr. 4 and 6) and Apologia General Science (Gr. 8)

Language Arts ~ Easy Grammar 34, 56, and Easy Grammar Plus, Wordly Wise 3000 Books 1, 3, and 5.  and Italic Handwriting Series by Getty & Dubay.  The younger two will be using Pathway Readers as well.  My oldest ds will be doing some Novel Studies.

History/Geography ~ We are doing some Canadian History and Geography.

Bible ~ Studying God's Word ~ younger two will be studying the Old Testament, and oldest ds will be studying the book of Acts as well as doing a chronological study on the Message and Ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I think this will be a full year for us, and I am looking forward to the change (I think!) LOL!  I will keep you all posted as to how things are going throughout the year!

Year End Review

Posted in Homeschool Thoughts

I found this posted at HsKubes' Haven at Home, and I thought it was quite good, so I wanted to share it with all of you!

Year End HomeSchool Review

~ Reflect ~
Reflect on this past school year...
How was my focus this year? Was I diligent?
Did our approach or curriculum work for us?
Did we honor God with our school year?
"Search me, O God, and know my heart:
try me, and know my thoughts" ~ Psalm 139:23
"Examine yourselves..." ~ 2 Corinthians 13:5

~ Refrain ~
Refrain from being too hard on ourselves...
If we haven't completed all that we wanted to do... relax!
Don't let end-of-the-year 'pressure'
to cause us to feel guilty, panic or stress.

"Be careful for nothing;
but in every thing by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
~ Philippians 4:6-7

~ Release ~
Release the guilt of any failures to the Lord...
Seek forgiveness in prayer where needed
and don't dwell on the negative.
Dust off our knees and try again.

"For thou, Lord, art good,
and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy
unto all them that call upon thee."
~ Psalm 86:5
" If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins,
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
~ 1 John 1:9

~ Rely ~
Rely on our Heavenly Father...
Seek Him always in our homeschool endeavors
and trust Him in His leading.

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him,
and he shall direct thy paths."
~ Proverbs 3:5-6
"He shall feed his flock like a shepherd:
he shall gather the lambs with his arm,
and carry them in his bosom,
and shall gently lead those that are with young."
~ Isaiah 40:11

~ Renew ~
Renew our homeschool vision...
Get refocused on the purpose of why
we chose to home educate our children.

"And these words, which I command thee this day,
shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children,
and shalt talk of them
when thou sittest in thine house,
and when thou walkest by the way,
and when thou liest down,
and when thou risest up."
~ Deuteronomy 6:6-7
(Also see Deuteronomy 11:18-21)

~ Repair ~
Repair the 'damage', if there is any.
If you feel it necessary, use the summer months to
catch up on, complete, or compliment their education.
But go easy.

Ephesians 5:16a ~ "Redeeming the time..."
Colossians 4:5b ~ "redeeming the time."

~ Rejoice ~
Rejoice that we don't do this alone...
The Lord is out strength.

"...for the joy of the LORD
is your strength." ~ Nehemiah 8:10b
"But they that wait upon the LORD
shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint."
~ Isaiah 40:31

He will equip us!
"He doesn't call the qualified...
He qualifies the called."

"I will instruct thee and teach thee
in the way which thou shalt go:
I will guide thee with mine eye."
~ Psalm 32:8
"I can do all things through Christ
which strengtheneth me." ~ Philippians 4:13

~ Resolve ~
Resolve to make improvements or changes where (and if) needed...
Pray for His guidance.
Be convinced and determined in our hearts and minds...
and then do what we need to... what He has for us to do.

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do,
do it with thy might..."
~ Ecclesiastes 9:10

~ Remember ~
Remember what has worked and what hasn't.
Let's learn from our successes and from our mistakes
and then press on.

"I press toward the mark for the prize
of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
~ Philippians 3:14
"Therefore, my beloved brethren,
be ye stedfast, unmoveable,
always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye know that your labour
is not in vain in the Lord."
~ 1 Corinthians 15:58
