That "Woodsy" Look

Happy to say, we now have our Christmas tree up! No...it's not decorated yet. We plan on doing that tonight as a family, since the hubby has overtime tomorrow and will have to go in early (he works third shift). But even undecorated it gives the house a nice "woodsy" look. I love it.  Yes, it sounds a bit secular to like a Christmas tree so much, but I've always looked forward to that part of the Christmas season ever since I was a child...probably more than getting presents. You see, my parents ALWAYS got a REAL christmas tree, which always eminated the smell of pine throughout our house during the holidays. ( I do this with candles now....sigh) My favorite thing in the world was to sit on the couch and read a book by Christmas tree light. And at night, when I went to bed, I could see the twinkling Christmas lights off my bedroom wall. It gave me a sense of security for some reason. I dunno...possibly cause my house wasn't always a happy home the rest of the year...but during that time it was...during the Christmas season. Everyone was in a better mood and nice to one another. I relished it.  So now, I just love to see the Christmas tree and it's twinkling lights. I love to sit and read by our tree at night, with a cup of hot cocoa and relax. For me now, it's mostly calming. A way to unwind. It's no longer a security blanket.  I always carefully set our Nativity under the tree. It's a beautiful reminder of the gift we ALL received so long ago. Something I now get to share on a regular basis with my own little girls. This was the one gift that I didn't get to share with my parents growing up...though I longed for it.  Church was an exercise only, but nothing lived at my home.  As a mother now, I have freely shared Christ with my girls and attempt to live it as best I can (though I often fall very short).  Christmas is totally different for them! They know it's true meaning and I get to share this with my girls!!! What a wonderful gift!! I ponder this often, as I sit by our Christmas tree at night, each year, and sip my hot cocoa. I am so blessed. This is then where I usually fall asleep on the couch, cocoa cup empty, with a smile on my face.

I completely get what you are saying about that "woodsy" feeling. Our's is like that as well...we have antique toys, red wood beaded garland and pine cones...to keep that woodsy feel. I love looking at it with the lights on at night, I feel all "warm and fuzzy" too! I love Christmas trees....
