A Day in the Life...

Desks

Well, we got our state tax return yesterday!  I was able to order our girls' school desks with it, which I've been waiting to do since the beginning of the school year. They are actually those little Table Mate desks that you see on tv, but would make a perfect school desk. Also, they fold up completely so that I can store them away. Having a VERY small house, with little room for anything, this will come in handy.  Where our kitchen is situated in the house, it gets quite dark in there even in the daytime. Plus, it's very cramped. So, wtih these we will be able to have school in the living room where there is more space and lots of sunlight during the daytime. At the beginning of the school year, sunlight wasn't much of a problem since I took the girls outside while it was warm. We camped ourselves out under the only tree in our backyard with some chairs and our books, drawing pads, etc. It was nice. Once it is warm again, I plan on all of us taking our portable desks out there in the sunshine once more.  I miss it...a LOT.

With our federal tax return, I plan on buying the books that are to accompany our curriculum for next year. We bought the America series curriculum from Christian Novel Studies this past summer, along with the Prairie Primer that we are presently using.  I am very excited to use it, as it is also a unit study that covers American history (1492 - 1860) from a Christian perspective...something they would have never gotten in public schools. It emcompasses all subjects, with the exception of math...which we already have. The main books used with this unit study are 'From Sea to Shining Sea", "The Light and the Glory", and "Sounding Forth the Trumpet"...but these are the kid's versions of these books. They are written in story format, so it's quite engaging for young students. Since I have a student that is just learning to read, there are also suggested reading books for her age (read-alouds and beginning readers) to accompany the study. We also purchased workbooks (of the same titles) to go along with these to help include her more. The science looks like a lot of fun as well! Can you tell I'm stoked for this one?! Next year ought to be a good year of study for all of the girls!

I have been planning for next year also. It is fun to look ahead and plan what you can do. I have been thinking about the history. It is a little early for us but I am glad that we will be learning with a Christian perspective and like you said, something we wouldn't get in public school. Exactly what I have been thinking about. I have been reading some very interesting stuff written by David Barton at www. wallbuilders.com. He is a historian and has some very interesting books!
