Modest Swimwear

I just read a friend's homeschool blog, talking about modesty (or better, the lack thereof) in the clothing industry. Having four daughters, the swim season brings dread to my mind when I think of all the looking I have to do to find something for my girls to wear that doesn't make them look like lil' prostitutes. Last season was the worst, for my pre-teen. She will be 12 this summer and am not looking forward to this again. We looked at the cheapest place we could afford...Walmart.  My daughter, who is in a size 16 kids or 3 women's, was difficult to shop for. Everything on the rack in her size had cups befitting someone much more endowed than herself. Granted, I could have taken a seem ripper and taken the cups out...yet the 'style' would remain. She would still look much more provocative than I (or she) would like. We went to the children's section, searching all over for a swimsuit that would fit, since she is in that in-between size. We found one, though it wasn't much better. It had no 'cups' in the suit, but the 'cut' was very similar. I had already been to Meijer and found nothing in our price range.  Yes, I was left with this pathetic excuse for modesty. I purchased it reluctantly, in hopes that my mother (who has a sewing machine) could sew the opening at the top more shut. To this day, my daughter does not like wearing that swimsuit, and rightly so. However, we got a break in the fact that my sis-in law gave my daughter an old swimsuit of her's. It is sewn more like a competitive swimmer's swimsuit...much like Speedo brand carries, with the whole chest covered (no openings or cup cuts) and the over the shoulder and across the back straps. I love it. My daughter loves it too. Whenever we go swimming, this is the one she picks up to take with her. However, she is getting too big for this swimsuit. Plus, the material is just getting worn down from so much use. I will have to shop again this year for another swimsuit. Sooo.... I went to a website that my twin sis had ordered a swimsuit from a couple years ago. They didn't get the exact measurements right for her's, but it is a very modest swimsuit and nice nonetheless. The girl that designed these is a Christian homeschool graduate. I'm all for supporting that! Also, she now offers 'kits' that you can order the fabric that you want, the size you want to make, and instructions to do it yourself. This is great, so that if you need to put a tuck here or loosen it there, you can! How wonderful! And it's cheaper than having her make it for you! What an awesome idea! And they are such modest, feminine swimsuits!  I am wanting to order from here for my girls this year. Hopefully we will have enough to get them!  Here is the website for all you other moms to fems that want modesty! http://www.modest-swimwear.net/

I got your tag. Still trying to figure out how to do it, lol.

I agree with you totally. My daughter is only 7 and I still have this problem! I can't imagine what it's like with a 12 year old.

Honestly, I've held up skirts that looked like her size before (when she was in a child's sz 5) and when I checked the size they would be a 12! Swimsuits are the same problem for us.
