Last night, my girls and I were listening to a cd of mine, "Celtic Women, A New Journey". I have a love for celtic music, so long as they aren't drinking songs, etc. Anyway...my eldest was wondering how old some of the women were that sing on the cd. (since we have watched the dvd also) So, I got on the computer with her and we began typing in the names of the singers. First, I had typed in 'Chloe Agnew bio', which gave an immediate result. It showed how old she was, how her career began, etc. Next was Orla Fallon, who is my age. We then went to Lisa Kelly...all had info on the same website even though we had typed their names in individually into the search bar. When I got to Maev, it too showed the same website that we got the others' bios from. So, I clicked on the link thinking nothing of it. BAM! Up popped a window of pornography! I don't think I have ever turned my daughter to face the opposite direction ever so fast in my life! My other two daughters had just walked into the room as this happened as well. I yelled at them to leave before they could see what was on the screen, as I frantically tried to get the window to close...yet it kept popping up! All the while I'm wondering why our pop-up blocker wasn't stopping this! Finally it stayed gone. Thank God. Next came the questions...ones I NEVER wanted to have to answer..let alone at my eldest's age. I was as discreet as I could be in the situation and vague as I could be. My daughter told me that it scared her and that her stomach was starting to hurt. All I could do was apologize profusely for not having sufficient internet protection on our compy. She later came up to me to tell me that she was praying to God to get the images out of her head. Evidently, she got a better look than I had thought she did in that split amount of time before turning her about face. I too was beginning to feel sick...wondering just how badly I had hurt my daughter's innocence by this lack of protection. So, now I am on a search to find GOOD internet protection. I have found a few...SafeEyes, and TotalNetGuard. However, was wondering if any of you bloggers out there have any other recommendations. I tried our 'parental controls' on the compy but got very frustrated with it. Even though I had set certain sites as 'allowed'...like my email, homeschool blogger, etc...i kept having to input a password every time. In my email alone, I had to input it each time I clicked on one of my folders! So, I'm looking for ease of use as well as sufficient blockage of the bad stuff. Please, leave suggestions! Thanks! |
