Socialization

Ahhh...the homeschooler's favorite topic! (NOT! ha ha!) I took my seven year old to the store yesterday, to get some sandals for her, her sisters and some groceries as well. It was a bit late in the evening...later than I like to be out with a child. However, I had promised to take her my very next trip to the store, and this was it. (It's so much quieter in the evening!! LOVE it!) She was very well behaved the whole time and even helped at the checkout. While she helped unload the items from the cart onto the checkout belt, the cashier asked me if she had been a good little girl. Instead of me answering, which was pretty much the norm up until this school year, my daughter answered the woman! This was shocking, considering that this is my daughter who usually looks at me to answer for her, though she is quite boisterous at home with her sisters or with friends. Nope, not this time! She spoke right up and told the lady how helpful she had been and how it was HER night to accompany mommy to the store. My daughter then proceeded to tell the woman how many sisters she had, where they were, and what they were doing. She then went on to tell the woman about my husband's family...how many siblings he grew up with, how many were boys, how many were girls and what they were presently up to in their lives! I was just chuckling to myself. The woman kept asking my daughter questions while she scanned our items and my daughter nonchalantly carried on the conversation without batting an eyelash. Finally, the woman noticed the time and said, "Wow! It's kind of late for you to be out with having school tomorrow."  My daughter answered, "That's okay, we homeschool!" With that, my daughter told the woman goodbye and the woman waved and smiled.  I was quite impressed. My daughter is blooming into a social butterfly while homeschooling!

No, we don't participate in a lot of activities, yet they get a good balance of exposure to all age groups wherever we go. Yesterday was a wonderful eye-opener for me, to see how well my daughter has learned to socialize with adults this year instead of just kids her age like last year in public school.  Our children grow even when we don't notice it.
