Pain In The Back

The last couple of days have been very painful. However, today I am actually able to sit down with relative ease. I have dislocated a rib...again. I've had a lot of trouble with them since having my girls (I have a very short torso...so making room for babies meant moving a lot of ribs the WRONG way). Back in 2003, I had four ribs out of place..somehow without much pain..just a constant burning sensation all over my back and a little ache. I just think my body had gotten used to it or something. I had them realigned by my chiropractor and left it at that. I then had our youngest daughter the following summer. I'm sure that didn't do anything good for my 'rib condition' either.

Well, back in early January of this year, I had been alseep on our living room couch (yeah, I do that sometimes). I turned over and something popped in my back. I could no longer move without experiencing terrible pain. I had gone to the ER, since our family doc was closed for that weekend and had no idea what was causing the excrutiating pain and inability to move. They were successful in prescribing me a bunch of pain meds and nothing more. So, right after the ER visit, my sis took me to the chiropractor. He was amazing! He examined my back, found the offending rib, did a quick adjustment and some cold therapy. I felt 100x better! I went in for another visit the next morning for more therapy.  My back was fine again....up until this Sunday morning.

I was lying in bed, half asleep, early Sunday morning. I vaguely remember stretching and then hearing a pop/crack right where my bra strap would be. That was it. I couldn't move. I couldn't even turn my head. This time I knew exactly what it was. With a lot of help from hubby, I got out of bed.  I made a phone call to the chiropractor's office and left a message about my predicament. Sunday was terrible. I couldn't sit at all without my whole spine feeling like it was being crushed by an invisible elephant on my shoulders. I couldn't lay down either. Ugh. So, I spent the day standing..carefully pacing...standing some more. I tried sitting a few times but the pain just got too bad. My hubby had some muscle relaxers left over from a back injury of his own, so I took some of those. It made it bearable to sit. I sat in my recliner all night. First thing in the morning the chiropractor's office called me. They could get me in that afternoon.

Monday afternoon I went into the chiropractor's. Yep, it was another dislocated rib. Ugh. He had me lay face down on the table and he once again adjusted my back. Ouch!! It hurt more this time. I was sent to the therapy area for about 10 minutes of cold therapy and pulse massaging. Afterwards, I felt much better, but still not great. I was given a strict regimen of icing and biofreeze applications, along with some ibuprofin for the inflammation. I made it home and have been doing that since. Yes, I feel much better...bearable. Still alot of pain and back spasms though. I go in again tomorrow morning for another adjustment. He said he didn't put the rib fully in place yesterday and will attempt it tomorrow if I'm up to it. So, hopefully after tomorrow's visit  my rib will be back in its rightful position and I'll have considerable less pain.
