A Day in the Life...
Jun. 9, 2008
Evolution Confusion

Tonight, while I finished up dinner, my eldest daughter approached me about something. She was reading a book about dolphins that my mother had gotten her a while back. My daughter loves dolphins. Anywhooo...she was reading this book and walks into the kitchen with a frown on her face. She says, "Mom, I'm not sure I want to read this book anymore." I ask her, "Why honey? You love reading about dolphins!" She answered me, " I know...but this book has a bunch of evolution in it. I hate reading it. It gets me confused." I ask, " How so? You already know that God created the Earth, right?" She says,"Yes, but reading all this stuff makes me wonder if it's really true or not." I was floored. I quickly needed to address all of this.

I was astonished that my soon-to-be twelve year old (next month) could distinguish between false teachings in her reading so young. Then again, I shouldn't be...she's almost a teenager! (Man, how time flies!) She knew the difference and wanted no part of the bad teachings. I quickly applauded her for that, but then needed to talk more with her.

I let my eldest know that it's good that she doesn't want to read the lies that this world wants to hand us...about anything, including evolution. However, she needs to learn both sides (in time), not just creationism. Yes, creationism is going to be her foundation in both her faith and teaching of science and the world. Yet, she will also be living and working in this fallen world as an adult. She has mentioned to me many a time that she wants to work with dolphins when she is older (I know this may just be a childhood thing..but she may choose to pursue it too..we still dont know. And I'm all for whatever she chooses!) So, I addressed the issue that if she chooses to pursue a career working with dolphins (or anywhere else for that matter) that she will have colleagues and possibly a boss that believes in evolution. I told her that she needs to know both sides to be able to knowledgeably put those false teachings down.

I let her know, though, that if the dolphin book made her uncomfortable or confused that she didn't have to read it. I don't want her in over her head at her age.  I pointed out that it is a book written by a secular author, not a Christian, so it is going to take an evolutionary point of view. I told her that we will be teaching her all her science & history from a creationist belief as she goes through homeschool, just as we have so far. This gave her some comfort and cheered her up. We then had a quick discussion about how old the earth is, according to God and then according to evolutionary theory. She was no longer confused, as that was the offending material in her book.

Yes, we will introduce her to evolutionary 'points of view' when she is ready, but not right now. I have already pointed out small things here and there..but not the full 'theory' by any stretch of the imagination.

My eldest chose to continue reading her dolphin book since she 'knows which parts are discussing evolution'.  She reiterated her dislike for it though and that she wished there were more dolphin books by Christians and I have to agree. So..I'll be hunting some down for her. I will probably have to order it online somewhere. I plan on checking out ICR's site first.

Maybe your daughter could, in the future, be the one who writes that book on dolphins from a christian perspective.

Excellent work, mom, that your dd could tell what was a lie and what's not. Kudos all around.

My 17yodd also LOVES anything having to do w/dolphins, whales, etc. She wants to be a Marine Biologist after she graduates from here (next year! eeekkk!!!). A friend told us about a Christian-based Marine Biology school in one of the Carolinas...I THINK. We're looking into it.

Other than that, we too, have cautioned her about any higher education she'll get b/c she'll be surrounded by evolutionists.

Hey...are you going to CHEO?

Blessings, Kim Wolf<><

Hello, I just clicked over here from Carrie Hanbury's blog (Who Are These Kids...?) You must have four girls? So do I! (I could have taken the time to look a little closer...) My oldest is 13. I just wanted to share with you a resource that my kids love, love, LOVE for learning about evolution and creation. Are you familiar with the Jonathan Park dramatized audio series? They do a great job of presenting both sides, with God's word as the final authority, but also with creation science backing up the Bible. You can hear an episode here: www.jonathanpark.com They change each Saturday. My kids have listened to these over and over again, and each time, we learn more!

My oldest is nine, a christian and reads a lot. Occasionally she will come across something in an information book that troubles her if it is anti christian. I find it very convicting as I should be teaching her more of the Word so that when it comes time for her to defend her faith she can do so. Thanks for such a thought provoking post.
Blessings, Julie
