Blueberries For Sal

I just have to share our first week of school with you!!  Most of this was Jonathan’s school but you know we have to all get involved.

Our book for the week was Blueberries for Sal and the ideas for our lessons came from BFIAR.

 On Monday:

We had a one-day community project.  We went to a blueberry farm in Cameron to glean their fields and help clean it for next season.  The blueberries that were picked were split between the food bank and us.  After picking we took the blueberries to the food bank and had a tour of the food bank.

We also made a “cookbook” for items to make with blueberries.  And, of course we had to try out some of the recipes.

Picking with Friends makes it go by so much faster plus its Better!!

OK.... Did I say we were blueberry picking??  Maybe I meant we were blueberry eating...

Here is one of the pictures from the food bank. That is a lot of cereal - and they need help sorting it.

On Tuesday:

We began our lap book for Blueberries for Sal.

I introduced the letter B to JJ and the sound it makes.  Then we discussed the animals in the book:  Birds and Bears.  I had him find the Partridge, Crow, and Bear in the story.

On Wednesday:

We did our math activity.  Counting berries – I only worked with counting to 5 with him.  He would draw a number from 1-5 and place that number above his bucket.  Then he would place that amount of berries in his bucket.  Of course we had to make the right sound.  When he was done with this game we put all the berries in the bucket and talked about why there was no more sound when dropping the berries in.  He would say his bucket was always like Sal’s.  (He loves playing this game!!)

On Thursday:

We did the classification activity and made the book “Are You My Mother”.  Which is where he had to match the mommy Bear, Partridge, Crow, and me; with the babies:  Bear, Partridge, Crow, and him.

In this picture the “Are You My Mother” book is open. Also on the right side is his blueberry painting picture.

On Friday:

We painted with blueberries.  Jonathan just painted with the blueberry juice.  The older children did two projects.

1st they drew a picture with a pencil then they painted it only using the blueberry paint.

2nd they drew a picture and colored it with crayons.  Then they painted over the whole picture with the blueberry paint.
