As Life Goes On

• Jul. 26, 2008 - A day off

I cannot believe how busy I have been!  This coaching gig takes up more time than I thought it would.  It's all good though.  The boys made it to 2 sessions of VBS this summer (thanks to D being in the choir and leading worship) and had a blast both times. They award points throughout the week for good behavior, doing something kind for others, memory verses, etc.  LV and D both won awards for most points in their classes the first week.  LM was bummed because he didn't win, but he tends to be in his own world a lot of the time.  He is a very sweet boy.  He just doesn't take notice of a lot of things going on around him.  The 2nd session we never turned in the form for their memory verses.  But they had a great time learning about the Lord.

Like I said, this swim coaching has taken up a lot of time.  Our team hosted it's annual 3 day invitational last weekend means every waking minute Friday-Sunday is spent at the pool for many of the team families.  But I must say, our Invitational is always one of the favorite meets in the league.  So the parents' hard work must be paying off.  Anyway, LM decided he wanted to try swimming the 100 free at this meet.  The most he has ever done is a 50, but he has a lot of endurance.  So I deck entered him Fri.afternoon.  Before he swam he came to talk to me about what he was supposed to do in his race.  I gave him his pointers and he headed back behind the blocks.   When it was his heat he got up on the blocks, started with his little jump/dive thing he does, and he was off!  He swam his 1st lap, got to the end of the pool, bent his little body sideways, and turned around for his 2nd lap.  He never touched the wall!  (If you don't know anything about swimming you must touch the wall at each end of the pool).  He did that 2 more times never touching the wall the entire race!!!!!  I was dying!  It was one of the cutest things I have ever seen.  After his swim (he got last place), he came back over to talk to me.  The 1st words out of his mouth were, "You told me the wrong thing, Mom.  I lost."  I don't know that it ever occurred to him that he is not as, umm, experienced as the other swimmers.   So i then asked him why he didn't touch the wall.  His classic response,  "I don't know how to do flip turns."  Okay.  This was never a problem in the 50.  That made my weekend.  Seriously.  I was so proud of him for trying, and I love his (ir)rational thinking.  So sweet and childlike.

Wed. night we had a dual meet against a team much smaller than ours.  D was not last in anything he swam (which puts a smile on his face), and he and LM both asked to swim the 25 fly!  They are my boys!  LM has been telling me he wanted a white ribbon.  After every dual meet I give him his ribbons.  He doesn't care what place they are for.  He just wanted a white one (that would be 3rd place), and Wed. night he finally earned it!  He is so proud of his white ribbon!  He has a 1st and 2nd place from that night, but that 3rd place ribbon is his special ribbon!  This kids cracks me up!

Then on to this weekend.  The team is up in the mountains swimming and I am supposed to be at a homeschool conference with H.  We were loaded up yesterday, dropped the boys off, stopped in to fuel up before dropping the puppy off with my uncle when H noticed coolant under the van.  He looked under the hood to find that the radiator had a crack in it!  Now we have 2 other vehicles, both of which are not dependable for a 3 hour drive right now.  So, although I was disappointed about not going to the conference, I got an unexpected day off (or 2) and got to enjoy just hanging out with my hubby.  My mom was kind enough to keep the boys for us.  So I don't know what I will do today.  The boys will come home at some point.  H has to get me a new radiator because I have to head up to the swim meet tomorrow morning.

One more week until championships, then after that H and the boys head to scout camp.  Then we need to hit the books.  I like to do school year round, but it didn't work out for us this summer.   After taking a few months off, it is time to get back  to school.

For today, I am going to enjoy my day off.

And just to note, it is still pretty smokey from the fires.  Yesterday was about 1 mile visability.

Don't you just love the way they reason? I know mine challenge me when they 'reason' away any of my 'logic'!!

Enjoy the days off!! If you're like the rest of us home schoolers, they are rare gems!!!

I'll keep praying for the fire situation!
