May 28, 2008 - salads: the rule of five

It's often said that an interesting salad comprises five parts:

    • the greens: baby greens & herbs
    • something sweet: fruit
    • something salty: crumbled cheese
    • something crunchy: toasted nuts
    • the dressing

Back when we lived in Nashville, my favorite tiny grocery/deli made a most delicious concoction that followed this Rule of Five. It went like this:

  • mixed baby greens
  • sliced strawberries
  • crumbled goat cheese
  • toasted walnut pieces
  • tossed with a honey sesame vinaigrette

Yummy. It haunts my taste buds still.

It's fun make my own combinations applying The Rule of Five to whatever is fresh and available.

I like:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • apple chunks or pear slices
  • blue cheese
  • toasted pecans
  • balsamic vinaigrette

 or

  • baby spinach
  • mandarin orange segments
  • goat cheese
  • sunflower seeds
  • sesame-ginger dressing

or

  • arugula
  • grape tomatoes
  • feta cheese
  • sliced almonds
  • lemon-tahini dressing

The possibilities are endless!

Ann, I've been reading here regularly, but haven't told you how much I enjoy all that you share. I love your salad ideas. Yum! It all sounds good, and I like how you shared the basic blueprint for salad making. The half birthday party is cool, too. And everything else...
