So, what have we been up to? Part 1: Violet Horses Around

Posted in Violet's Adventures • Mar. 30, 2007

During our "space bar break" from blogging, what have we been doing?  Well, here is one major thing: Violet has been horsing around!   She has had a love affair with horses since she first saw one, and early this winter, the Lord opened up a wonderful opportunity for her to take care of a horse one day a week, and she gets private riding lessons that are actually affordable as part of it!  We met up with one of my Creative Memories customers at the grocery one day, and I started asking her questions about horses since I knew she has two.  So, she said that she was actually looking fro someone to take care of her horse one day a week, and, because I love my daughter, I jumped at the chance.

Well, my girl is in love with the horse, and I have found out that it is not as much fun to take care of a horse when you are 34, out of shape, and not getting to ride as it would have been when you were 12 and dying to own a horse!  But, every time I see her on Miracle and see her smile at the barn, it makes it all worth it... well, almost... there were actually several weeks below 0 where the water buckets were frozen, the horse was punkish and I had to run qround the ring with her in subzero weather to get the spunk out before violet could ride her, and I wheezed for hours afterward... on those days, it sure didn't feel worth it, especially when Violet was frezzing as she rode!  But we are getting closer to warm, nice weather and I am getting better at horse handling, so it is getting much more fun!  Just another trick in my super-hero toolbox, I guess!

And, here they are!  Violet with Miracle:

THE INCREDIBLE GIRL AND HER HORSE, MIRACLE!

Eight years ago today....

Posted in Violet's Adventures • Jan. 8, 2007

Eight years ago today, my life was transformed forever.

Eight years ago today, I came face to face for the first time with a true Kindred Spirit, one of the most amazing human beings on the planet.

Eight years ago today, I experienced the greatest pain of my life, as well as the deepest joy I have ever known, all at once.

Eight years ago today, I gazed upon a small, wet and very squirmy nearly 7 pound miracle sent from the Lord.

And eight years ago today, as I held her precious tiny body, counted her fingers and toes and marvelled at every inch of her, I became a mom.

Eight years later, she has grown from 20 1/2" to a tall, beautiful young lady with incredible, kind and gentle eyes that sparkle with her smiles and imagination.  She is so talented, creative and smart.  I still marvel at her, at the compassion and kindness of her heart, the purity and devotion of her spirit to Jesus, and the wisdom and character which are growing strong and true within her.  As her (real) name describes, she is truly a joy to her father (earthly and Heavenly, too!) and me, and she is truly full of grace.  I pray that as she grows, the Lord will guide her every step and grow all these wonderful seeds into beautiful and sweet fruit in her life.

I am blessed beyond measure to be her mom, and priveleged and honor to play a part in her journey.  She is a joy and a blessing and I am eternally thankful that when she entered this world eight years ago today, the arms that got to hold her, to be her mommy, were mine.

I love you, my "Violet".  Happy, Happy Birthday.

Love, Mama

Help! There's a Day Spa in my House!

Posted in Violet's Adventures • Aug. 8, 2006

At about 8:30 this evening, Violet came out to the living room and proclaimed, "Madame, I would like to invite you to come with me for a surprise."  So, being the obedient Mommy that I am, I followed her.  She stopped outside her door, picked up a clipboard, and said, "Excellent.  You are right on time for your appointment.  What is your name, please, m'aam?"

"Lady Anne Cordelia, the Lady of Shallot," I replied, immediately realizing that replying simply, "Mommy," would have been far too unimaginative given the circumstances and formality of the question posed to me.

She smiled.  "Right this way, please, and kindly remove your glasses and hair clip.  OK, please lie down right here."

"Welcome to my spa.  I am Miss Merriman, but you may call me simply "Miss" if you like."  I will be treating you to a massage today."  (then Miss Merriman asked in hushed tones, " Mommy, what day is it today?"  "Tuesday," I whispered, and we were back in character again at once)

"I would like to let you know that on Tuesdays and Fridays, we have our massages for free... actually they are free every day, but on Tuesdays and Fridays, we pamper you with free lotion."

My Colonial-era massage therapist suddenly disappeared, and soon I heard a smatter of scurrying sounds coming from the adjacent bathroom as a stool was being scooted across the tile and cabinets were being open and subsequently shut.  Then, as suddenly as she had disappeared, the proper lady plunked herself down on my lovely cushioned behind and announced, "I have chosen Warm Vanilla Sugar for you this evening for your lotion.  Now we shall begin the massage."

The pampering continued thus for nearly a half an hour, at the end of which Miss Merriman had to poke Lady Anne Cordelia several times to rouse her.  We went out of her room and she cordially thanked me for coming to her spa, then promptly asked, "Now can I have a turn, Mommy?" and smiled.  (Miss Merriman may be a lot of things, but clueless is certainly not one of them.)

So I went in and she knocked and I did my best rendition of a very proper spa owner, but nowhere near the level of Miss Merriman and her dramatic flair.  However, I stopped short when I poured the free Tuesday special Warm Vanilla Sugar lotion into my hand to give Miss Merriman her massage.  It looked suspicious.  Then I read the bottle:  Warm Vanilla Sugar Moisturizing BODY WASH!

This begins the point in the story wherein Miss Merriman and Lady Anne dissolve into gales of laughter, after which Lady Anne retreats to the spa's shower room to wash off the suds from her back and resolves to step things up in regards to both Miss Merriman's phonics lessons and attention to detail.  (she could read it, but didn't... just a grab-and-go mistake)

And thus concludes the story of the day spa from long ago.  The author sincerely hopes you have enjoyed it.
