Play Happy - Formally The Special Needs Homeschool Family

Wfmwheaderbackwards

Today is Backwards Day for Works-For-Me Wednesday. Instead of me giving you a nice idea, you are going to help me with my dillema!

So, here goes. My youngest son is unwilling to to potty train. He is our 4th child and yes the baby of the group. He is now pushing 4.5 years old and still wearing a pull up. The boy is just not interested in using the potty. He isn't afraid of it as he will on occasion want to go when his brother is going, but to consistantly go is another story.

I have tried treats with the timer, bribes, 'big boy' talk, special undies, etc., but the boy just isn't interested. I really don't want to force him but I am thinking that I'm going to have to just say 'your done!' one day and make him go and have lots of accidents.

Now let me say that his older brother who is 6 and has autism, took over 2 YEARS to potty train. It was a long, long haul for us but now his is completely dry day and night. So yes, I must admit I'm not all gung ho about potty training right now. Maybe I'm the one who needs some training and not him?! :)

Your ideas are welcome! Leave me a comment will ya?! Make sure to check out the other Backwards Day questions at Rocks In My Dryer who hosts Works-For-Me Wednesdays.

I WISH I had an answer for you, but I'm in the same boat. My little guy is 4, and has no interest in using the potty. I make him do it, but if I let him, he'd just wet all day (and poop) in his pull-up. I've thought about just switching him to actual underwear, but I don't want to have the messes of him wetting through his clothes.

I'll have to check back and see if you get any great ideas.

Whoops, I was going to tell you my name and my blog address, at least, not just be anonymous.

It's Paige at

I make up silly songs about the potty, too, but that doesn't seem to help much.

The one thing that has worked the best for us is a toy basket full of things from the dollar store. Knowing that a dry day or a bm in the toilet merited an award helped my kids get over the hump. But, I would add that they really have to decide to do it on their own. No amount of cajoling on mommy's part will help. You probably do need to bite the bullet and let him make messes though - my kids knew when it was ok to pee in the pants and when they were wearing cotton. Heather@Mommymonk

Hi Janelle,
I did a post at Shannon's a while ago. I pasted the link here. Lots of tips, many you've probably heard before but maybe something extra, too. Sounds like maybe at 4 1/2 you just need to put your foot down and go for it? Good luck whatever you decide!
