• Tuesday 24 February 2009 - We're slowing down

I rensently realised my son is 4. Not even 4 and a half. I felt all this pressure from my son's other side of the family. No one said START NOW! but I felt like it was implied. I could be wrong but thats the impression I got. Because I wanted prove he was better off at home we started.
It was when I began mapping out until then end of our school year that I realised this is way to much. He seems fine. Some parts he likes others, not many, he doesn't. And even then if i catch him at the right time of the day its no problem. But I realised he is 4.
A baby. He hasn't even stopped wetting the bed at night. He is barely out of naps. And he can read quite a few words? To what benifit? So he can be ahead of his peers? Why? As long as he ends up with self montoring skills, independant study skills and college enrollment then he'll be fine, inshallah. So if he starts reading at 4 or 6 or even 7 doesn't really make a big impact on things. I don't want him to hate achedmics because he missed out on the freedom of being a tiny kid. Nope! He is my baby and he will be forever. And right now it's much more important he build vertical duplo "jumping bridges" for his fingers and bable about his "blue house", which is in NY by the way, "far far away".
All too soon he will be stuck at the computer or at his desk writing and resurching. I want him to apritiate that while formal achedemics are important, they are only important  because it can alow you live a better life when you are stuck in a book.
Don't get me wrong, i love books. It's just that there is SO much more to life than books. You can read about roses all you want but it will never be the same as smelling one. lol even a rotten, stinky one, lol.
So whats the plan? Ok a little achedemia but much, much less. Not that we were constantly schooling but I think less is still more. I figure instead of daily 2-3 hours daily we will go inshallah down to mon, wed, and friday. Plus he has started going to Discovery time at the library and gymnastics, in addition to jumma on fridays. I don't think he gets al lot of formal educative benifit from jumma but he gains social skills like knowing there are times to talk and times not to, seeing his brothers in islam interacting on their best behavior inshallah, plus re-enforcing islamic vaules, demonstrations of salat and correct recitaions of the last Book from Allah, the Quran.
BY the time his baby fat is gone he will be ready for real achedemia, i think inshallah. In the mean time we are slowing down.

• Wednesday 18 February 2009 - Modified Wild Rice Stuffing

Here is a recipe that my husband loved and is a lot more nutritious than normal stuffing.

1c shredded carrot (about 2 medium)
1c chop celery (about 2 stalks)
1/2c chopped onion (about 1)
1/2c dried fruit, about rasin sized peices
1/4c wild rice
1 3/4c water
1/4c brown rice
1 tsp boulion granouls
1/4 tsp nutmeg or sage

1. Wash rice, in med. sauce pan combine wild rice, 1 3/4 c water, brown rice, boulion and sage. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer covered 20 min.
2. Add carrot, celery, onoin and fruit. Cook coved on med-low for 25 min or more or until veggies are just tender, stiring frequently. (I added more water, i think the fruits absorbed a lot of water)

NOTE you can make this ahead and stick in a cassarole dish, baking at 350* with 1/4 c water for 1/2 hour but i would add more water than that becaus eof the fruit.

Before addition of fruit it was about 66cal per serving (6 in all), 13 CHO, 1 fiber and 3 pro

• Sunday 15 February 2009 - I excersised!

So I a can happily and easily eat health meals, even approprait portion sizes with a little work. But exersize is my hang up. I know its good for me and I'll not only inprove my health but have more energy and all that but my intrests are in things that involve sitting by nessisty. I can't exactly sew while i jog can I? Reading is a bit dangerous while walking but it can be done. Reasurching on the computer? Cooking can be adapited a bit from standing to marching but in all very limited. I hate working with weights because I am pretty weak so its hard and it HURTS the next day. I am SOOOO against pain. Of course the pain of child birth gave me the love of my life, my little boy.....
So I decided a week or so ago to just get up of my tukus for 3 hours a day. Not including cooking. This is not working out per say but its not holding still either especially not sitting. I did ok. Really there isn't more than an hour and a half of clean that needs to be done each day so I usually quit about 2h in. I took one day off because I felt like it.
See my weight is stable over weight by 20 lbs. But my shape has changed. My thighs and hips have ballooned. Now my waist has disapeared and a prominint belly has emerged. NOT COOL! NOT COOL AT ALL!
I decied screw it! I am buying food my husband will actully eat. I love healthy food, but my husband really doesn't he trys and doesn't complaine he just avoids eating at home, lol. So I have been cooking LOTS of meat. I cook meat at least once a day. I use white rice instead of brown most of the time and use butter in most things. Normally I always use brown rice, whole wheat flour, the most minimal amout of olive oil, meat only when my husband can't stand it any more, beans of a great veriety daily and fish  once or 2ce a week. We normally keep yogurt, low fat plain or fat free plain, dried fruit, and lots of vegetables and always cheddar, usually full fat by the way. When I would tract my nutrient in take i was deficent in fat and vitamin e most of the time. I loved the food but sometimes I would CRAVE fat. Then I go over board. Half a cake in one day. That kind of thing.
Well I am tired of all that so I made lots of american food. You know I wasn't hungry nearly as much? I made pies and other deserts that counted as at least 1/2 a seving of fruit  per slice and used whole wheat flour. I did use a lot of crisco though. And sugar, but lately we had been consuming more and more honney and sugar anyway.
Today I slept way in and so I decied Imust be off my bum not 3 but 6 hours that way mabey i'll actully go to bed at a decent hour. Inshallah.
So I have completed 1 hour now 5 to go. And as the title shows I excersied not long 20-30 including warm up and streaches but considering the last time i excersied was about 2 or 3 months ago and at that for 3 or 4 5 min incrments this is an improvement.

• Friday 13 February 2009 - ARRG! Fake people!

Some peoples children! And I am not talking about someone under the age of 18! Ok so i ran into someones myspace page the girl titled it something like "Salafi Strong Nothings going to bring us down" ok fine a little militant sounding but fine what ever could be in jest but no the chic is NUTZ! She titled the top post something like "them kafir H*** aint got nothin on me!" ARRRGGG I dont have a account so i could reminder that a bashing anyone, even non muslims is never ok and that it was SUPER un niqabi like to do so!
LEt me explain there arabic terms :
salafi=followers of the quran, sunnah and companions of the last Prophet, salallahu alahi wasalam
conservative, and genrally highly studious....but then there are inorant people..........
muslim=one who subbmits compleatly to Allah (God)  and Belief in God , the one and only one worthy of all worship .Belief in all the Prophets and Messengers  sent by GodBelief in the Angels .Belief in the Books  sent by God(including the Qur'an). elief in the Day of Judgment and in the Resurrection (life after death).Belief in Destiny (Fate)
kafir=polythiest, disbeliver (we consider ptting anything or anyone equal or above the Creator polytheistic for exaple hidus christians and buddists)
Niqab=covering of every part of a womans body except sometimes the eyes, to assure that she is not essentially sticking out in the crowd and getting sexual attention, this sister did not get that hijab which doesn't nessisarily inclued face and hands includes being modest in your behavior.
Really what is the point if you are going to be cussing out everyone in contact with you. Often these are the same ladies that flirt with men, boody dance and get judgemental at others.
Why cover your beauty if you're going to be all hoochie? where's the logic? Islam is a logical scientific way of life. There is a time and a place to be hoochie if you want, and that in privacy with your spouce. Not over the web, not in the mall not at the masjid! (mosque) ARRG ARRG ARRG Subhannahallah
