As I was asking for direction this year for my school curriculum, I felt the Lord was leading me to put Him first and everything else would come together. It has been exciting to see how our school year materials have come together in a cohesive way when God was at the center.
Last year we had concentrated on the Old Testament and did not get very far with ancient history. We had just finished studying ancient Greece when the year was over. Then we got an exciting opportunity to go to Greece at the beginning of the school year, which launched our home school year. We have just finished with the Roman era because we covered the Gospels and The Book of Acts last semester. The free curriculum, provided by Calvary Chapel, was the way we began the day. The children enjoyed the coloring pages and other exercises. I read chapters from the Bible that went along with them. We read Victor's Journey through the Bible to see what those places looked like today. As we read Augustus Caesar's World, the stories of Herod and the Jews all lined up with what we were studying at the time. We read the first Story of Science by Joy Hakim. Because the first scientists lived in Greece, it has been very interesting; the children have a frame of reference. We did lapbooks on Rome, the moon, and Mythological Creatures to go along with what we were learning. My children didn't mind the other worksheets I threw in from Easy Grammar, Daily Grammar, Easy Writing, A Reason for Spelling, A Reason for Handwriting, and Math U See because school has been fun. Books that we enjoyed along the way were The Bronze Bow and Galen, For fun, we have been reading the Landon Snow series at bedtime. |
