I am always amazed at how the Holy Spirit leads my homeschool because I ask Him to. I am not one to think ahead about what we will do. Yet everything falls together. Here are some examples:
Last week I thought I would let the children watch a Nest video of Daniel while I finished some chores around the house. Then we went upstairs to do school and I began with “Here Comes Heaven”. We were on the last chapter and I wanted to finish it. To my amazement, the final chapter was all about Daniel.
In history that day, we talked about how Paris began. I saw a book on my shelf I had ordered a while back about saints and opened it up. I saw there was a story about Genevieve, the Patron Saint of France. In the Story of the World Activity Guide there happened to be her picture. So while the children colored her picture, I was able to read her story. Did I plan that? No, but I think the Holy Spirit did.
The book I read to the children from daily is the story of Augustine. We opened up our Story of Science book and it was all about Augustine, the whole chapter.
Before that book, we had read Galen and found it coincided with our science book in the same way. The day we talked about Hippocrates being Galen’s teacher was the day we began reading about him in science.
This week we have been studying about the pilgrimages. One of the recommendations in Story of the World was to talk about Saint Francis of Assissi. I had no idea he was related to the pilgrimages. But I had ordered the movie from Blockbuster online months ago and I noticed it is the next movie in our queue to arrive at our house. Perfect timing!
I remembered that I had Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and thought I’d see if it was the same time period. Lo and behold, it is a book about a pilgrimage. So we began reading that book. The children have loved it because they are drawing each character as I tell the story. Each has made a very interesting picture, with a lot of detail about each character on the pilgrimage, even my five year old.
Every day, I see God move in our homeschool because these instances happen too often to be coincidence. I know I am doing what He wants me to do for my children because He has blessed me by making school happen so easily with no striving.
I was truly blessed today when the children said they would pick wives who plan to homeschool their children, too. Then I knew how much it means to them, too! |
I really enjoy reading your blog.
Blessings,
Lynn
