Homeschooling Katt

Jan. 7, 2009 - Thrifty Tuesday

I am always looking for educational materials and try to do it in the most thrify way possible. Here are some of my favorites:

Yard Sales/Swap Meets/Flea Markets : in the summer there is no end to the local yard sales. I have found it to be a great place to pick up scholastic books for the kids. Most of the time they are unread and only around .25 each. Check out your local papers classified section for a list of sales...usually the Thursday paper is the best for this information.

GoodWill : One of my favorite thrift stores. There is a endless supply of kids books and I have even found some college text books on anatomy which will be helpful in the highschool years. kids books are usually .50 each and hardback books 1.00 (give or take depending on the GoodWill store). Locate your local GoodWill here

Salvation Army Thrift Store: Another good place to find books, board games and puzzles. I have bought really nice board games for 1.00 or less. If the kids get tired of them we just yard sale them or donate back to the Salvation Army Thrift Store. You don't have a lot of money tied up in them. Locate your nearest store

Freecycle : A website which list local things people are giving away free.Find your local group . A good place to look for families giving away boxes of books.

Start your own thrifty web group : I have been running my own thrify web group for a couple of years now. I use yahoo groups. You can set it up to your own specifications. Mine cost members nothing to use. I do moderate it to keep the spam and unwanted (bad language, unappropriate )things off of it. This allows me to be the first to know about the good deals. I would be happy to help if you have questions about setting up your own. You can check mine out Here. Having your own local group not only saves you some money but allows your community to recycle unwanted/unused items , helps the economy in your own community and develops fellowship among your neighbors.

I would love to see comments on your favorite thrifty ideas or locations.
