Friday Show and Tell ~ Tim's Shoe

Posted in Friday show and tell

Welcome to another Show and Tell with Mary.

Timothy is really enjoying his continuing education classes at our local community college.  This session he took "woodworking" and "knowing your digital camera".  In his woodworking class, he made a wooden shoe all with hand tools.

This is the front view.  I love all the detail he put into it.  The little lines used as trim were burned into the wood.

Here is the side view.  I love the detail of the tongue in the shoe.

Blessings,

Dawn

Operation Christmas Child

Posted in Friday show and tell

It is time for another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.

It is almost time for the Operation Christmas Child shoebox program...  My kids love this every year and look forward to it.  This is a really fun hands-on charity for kids.  We start collecting things in the middle of the summer.  This year we made our boxes early, because I knew we had several hospital trips and doctor appointments in the next few weeks that could cause illness in our family.  We wanted to make sure that the boxes were ready in case we are faced with the flu or something else.
This year is really neat because Operation Christmas Child has some new features.  They have fun "about me" sheets that you can fill out and put in your box.  The kids really hope that they will get a letter back this year from someone.  Also, if you pay online for the shipping of your box with EZ Pay, then you will get a tracking number and see where in the world your box ends up.   Very cool!  As always, you can still watch the boxes being delivered (but not your particular box).  We plan on doing this via the Internet on Christmas Day with the kids.  It is good for them to see first hand how VERY, VERY blessed they are as children here in America.

They made five boxes this year, and we look forward to November 16-23 for mailing them.

Another blog I really enjoy about a homeschool family of 14 who are missionaries in Mexico is doing a shoe box mission of their own this year.  If we have time, we may join in their box project as well.  Go visit the  Lockwood's if you want to see more boxes.

For those of you who know that we are at Ronald McDonald House right now,  Timothy is doing well and we will be going home tomorrow.  They figured out the problem that we have been worrying about with his heart and it has now been resolved.  His pacemaker is still working well, too.

Blessings,
Dawn

Show and Tell Friday~Vacation

Posted in Friday show and tell

It is time for another Show and Tell with Mary!

We are just wrapping up our vacation and packing up to head home.  I wonder how many of you can guess where we have been?  I bet most of you can figure out what type of place we are in, but can you figure out the state or actual location?  Here are my hints~
There are loads of these in the area.
My dh and I can write each other love notes on public property,t and we are not breaking the law.
We spent lots of time in the indoor pool, even though one would usually spend all of their time outside.  The weather did not cooperate.
These little critters are nearby but out of sight! Yikes...
So where are we?...for a few more hours at least....

Blessings,
Dawn

Friday Show and Tell ~ Week 2 Construction

Posted in Friday show and tell

It is time for another Show and Tell with Mary!

We are in week two of construction and so far, so good.  The framing is almost done, and we should be "dried in" within the next few days.  Our contractor tells us that this is the fast part when the weather is nice, and it will get slower down the road.  We are hoping to be done by the first week of December.

It is starting to get really noisy around here.  There is loads going on inside and out.  More of the house is being affected than I expected, but it still is not nearly as bad as people told me it would be.  Yes, there is more dust, but the guys clean up after themselves really well.  There is always the backyard to escape to when things get really loud inside.

The roof going on!

Inside the house, there are pressure beams and bracing going on in Goldilock's room to  give added support to the new room above.

Also her radiator is out and being replaced with a smaller radiator so that she will have more wall space.  Her radiator was so large that it never could warm  all the way across.  We are very blessed that the radiator man is trading our huge radiator for two small radiators.  The only cost to us is the labor.  What a blessing that is.

One of our new to us radiators!

Yikes, somebody get me some paint!  The beams will be covered back up once the inspector has looked everything over at this stage.

As for the new room ~

It is coming along and we are starting to get a better vision of what it will look like.  Several of you asked, "Who gets the new room?"  That is a really good question.  I don't know for sure.  Timothy has first choice because he is the oldest.  However, he is thinking that the room looks a bit claustrophobic with the attic like walls.  More likely than not, the new room will go to Tom Sawyer (7) who is chomping at the bit to have it.

Next week our electricity is being brought up to meet fire and city codes, and our circuit breaker is being upgraded so that we have enough electricity for the new room as well as the rest of the house.  We've been tripping the circuit breaker for years.

Have a blessed weekend!

Blessings,

Dawn

A New Adventure....

Posted in Friday show and tell

After much thought and prayer over the last year, we have decided that our current home is the "forever" home.  We like our low mortgage, land, location, and living in a vintage home.  There was only one major problem ~ we needed one more bedroom.  We have a unique situation where each of the children needs their own room.   Becuase of Goldilock's issues, it is not safe for her to share a room with Little Red Ridinghood.  Her behaviors are just too unpredictable, and we want both of our dd's to find their bedrooms to be a peaceful, safe place.  Goldilocks also sleeps behind an alarmed door for everyone's safety.  Furthermore, our disabled 19 year old son will continue to live with us for many years to come.  It is important to us that, while he needs much support and care, that he also have some independence and a space of his own.  So it would not work for him to share a room with his 7 year old brother.  That has left our youngest son and daughter sharing a room for a few years.   All that said, we decided we had to add a room to our home.

So....the adventure begins.  The first indication that something was really going to happen was this showing up in our driveway.

I bet this had any neighbors that we don't know talking up a storm.  (We know the neighbors well on either side of us, but can not seem to get past the waving stage with the folks across the street ~ they keep to themselves but watch us a lot.)

Then changes started inside the house.  Bye-bye bedroom window!  This will all be drywalled over after the inspector comes out.

Then this morning the crane came!  It was really cold and foggy outside, so the kids only stood outside for a few minutes.  I kept telling them how exciting this was and they kept shivering.

It will be a small railroad room (meaning you have to walk through one room to get to the other), but we are so happy the project is underway.  We are also very happy with our contractor so far.  I interviewed a lot of men, but one just stuck out as being really honest, caring, and willing to really look at ways to save us money and build a little bit green.  He is really proving to be all that and more.  He is really good about safety issues and giving the kids a safe space to watch and learn.  He grew up in a family with 13 kids, so it must come naturally to him to think what the kids need!  Also the men he has hired are very respectful, and I have heard no bad language out of them at all.

Week one down!  I can't wait to see what next week brings.

Blessings,

Dawn

Friday Show and Tell ~ Saturated in Reading...

Posted in Friday show and tell

Welcome to another Show and Tell with Canadagirl!

One of our main goals this year is everyone becoming a good reader.  One way we are going about this task is to saturate the children in reading materials ~ from games to Leap Pads to good old phonics lessons.  Our dear one-on-one mental health worker for Goldilocks blessed us with 10 Leap Pad books and cartridges this past week.  We already had three Leap Pads and a few books that I had found at yard sales through the years.  The kids are in heaven with all the new books and are asking constantly if they can go work with a Leap Pad.

They are doing a really nice job of playing the games and sounding out the words instead of letting the machine do all of the work.

I am also busy making file folder games.  They are just right for Tom Sawyer, and the girls can do some of the easier ones.

While I am writing this, I glanced across the room to see this adorable view. It warms my heart.

Blessings and happy reading!

Friday Show and Tell~Repurpose of Rooms

Posted in Friday show and tell

Hello, and welcome to another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.

We decided a few weeks ago that our main living area was not working well for us.  Since the day we moved in (8 years ago), the living room has seemed too large in some ways and there wasn't much wall space.  There is also no coat or linen closet in the whole house.  Oh, how I miss having a closet to put coats and the vacuum cleaner away in.  However, I do like my 1931 house and they did not have coat closets back then.  Up to this point, our living room was our family room.  Everyone saw the toy "mess" from the front door and the room was being used for play, tv, computer, scrapbooking and storage.   Our dining room was being used for school, school book storage, projects and eating.  The dining room was getting more and more crowded, and there was never enough bookshelves.  I often had to wander all over the house to find a book on a bookcase that was crammed into a corner somewhere.

My Mom's been urging me to repurpose the dining room into the sitting/tv room.  She did something similar in her house -- changing her large living room into her art studio and a small bedroom into a sitting room. It turned out so well for her that we finally decided to try it, too.  So we turned the dining room into a much smaller and more cozy sitting room.  I was able to get all of my inherited antique mahagany furniture into the space to give it a more formal look.  My Mother gave me her old loveseat (that wouldn't fit into her "new" sitting room) and slipcovered it for me.  It fits in perfectly.

My antique secretary fits into the corner and holds all of my scrapbooking materials.  My dh is going to make a shelf to go over the steam radiator so that the loveseat does not touch it and the CD houses can fit on top.

I still have to get valances up.

My Grandfather's antique chair was finally rescued from the kid's room.  It needs to be repholstered some day in the future, when the kids won't ruin it, so it just has a towel over its seat for now.  Another thing about a 1931 house is that there are very few three prong outlets.  The yellow electrical cord is going to the A/C unit in the other room.  Ugh! We are making some upgrades to our electricity next month.

We then repurposed the living room into the library/school/eating area.  We figured we spend most of our time with our books, games, puzzles and eating, so it makes since to give those activities the biggest room.

We bought some cheap bookcases for about $40 each to make a library wall.  Now, all the family books are in one room!  The kids do have bookcases in their rooms for all of their storytime and personal books. On the bottom shelf of the first tall bookcase you can see a blue bucket.  That is the overflow project bucket for when it is dinner time and the table needs to be cleared off of unfinished school projects.

The view from our front door.  You can see the computer beyond the table.  The ultimate goal in a year or two is to go to all laptops and be hard wired into the big teen's computer (or something like that~I am not a computer techie person).  The house already has WiFi. Anyway, I would gain that desk for more school space for the kids to spread out.  The cabinet beyond the computer holds all of the kids's table time activities: crafts, playdough, puzzles, etc.

The front wall of the house holds an almost empty bookcase!!! (previously unheard of in our house), calendar area, the reading corner and the big bookcase of all of the books we will be using this year for school.  I love that all of our school books are in one place.

Well, there is a tour of our new rooms.  We hope that it works better for us.  So far everyone is really pleased.

Sidenote~All the Legos went to the kids's room and they can only bring down a bowl of Legos at a time.  Also, we are still using a corner of the kitchen as our toy closet!  It works well for us.  They bring out what they want and then have to put it away when done.  With their sitting room play space being smaller, it is easier for them to find all the small parts and get them put away. YIPPIE!

Blessings,

Dawn

Friday Show and Tell ~ Eating Like Ancient Romans

Posted in Friday show and tell

It is time for another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.  Hop on over and see all the great entries.

We are finishing up our studies on Ancient Rome.  We decided to have a Roman meal in the traditional fashion of laying down as they did at parties.  I must admit that the kids were not impressed with laying down while eating.  I heard all kinds of comments about how the Ancient Romans must have choked all the time and were lazy.  However, they played along to appease their silly mother.

We ate sausage, corn, olives, peppers and tomatoes, flat rice bread with honey (because we are gluten free) and warm grape juice (to represent wine).  One of the many interesting facts that we learned about their food is that they always drank their wine diluted and warm.

We tried several different ways of reclining while eating and found that none of the ways were very easy.  It was a fun cultural lesson.

Hopefully, we will get to make our aqueduct on Friday, and I will get to post it.  However, I have a nasty summer cold and would rather lay about and rest.  We will see what is to come.  We start Pirates next week!

Blessings,

Dawn

Show and Tell Friday ~ Storm Damage

Posted in Friday show and tell

Welcome to another Show and Tell hosted by Mary.

Well, we had a bit of excitement around here.  We have had several intense thunderstorms this week.  I really love storms and took all the kids out on the back porch for the most recent one.  We were all bundled up in blankets, watching the rain and then it started to hail.  I thought it was getting a bit too wild and started to tell the kids it was time to go in.  Right as I began to speak, the wind kicked up like crazy and stuff was flying/spinning all around us.  I screamed for the children to get in and most of the children got safely inside, but Little Red Ridinghood was all tangled in blankets, umbrellas and the rocking chair.  I looked out and am pretty sure I saw a tiny tornado and our Step Two Super Coaster coming our way.  I yanked her through the mess, and we ran to join the others in the basement.  As we sat on the floor of the basement praying for Daddy who was on his way home in the storm, the basement door flew open and water poured into the already flooding basement.  While I was trying to close the door against the wind, the power went out.  Yikes!  When the weather died down, we emerged to find Daddy just coming home safe and sound. He had been in traffic, sitting next to a transformer when it exploded, so knew the electricity would be out when he got home. The backyard and back porch were a mess.  The neighbor's tree came down into our yard, crushing the fence and covering some of our decorative trees and our peach tree was torn off at the top.  The super coaster was lifted and carried about 15 feet across the yard.

My husband using the axe to move brush:

The seesaw covered by fallen tree.

The top of the peach tree.  I must say, I don't need to find the ladder anymore to harvest the peaches.

The super coaster where it landed.  Still in one piece!

Tom Sawyer standing next to one of the piles of limbs that is taller than him.  Guess what we are doing for chore time tomorrow?  It is going to be a big chore to clear the yard.

All around the neighborhood tonight, there are large limbs and powerlines down.  The church up the street lost a major tree, which fell right into the street, blocking traffic in both directions.

We feel so blessed to be safe and sound and to have great neighbors who were out helping each other before the storm was even completely over.  Even as I type, neighbors are still out with chain saws cleaning up the roads. Thank goodness we are all safe and sound.

Blessings,

Dawn

Friday Show and Tell ~ Bird Sanctuary

Posted in Friday show and tell

It is time for another Show and Tell with Mary.

We have had lots of nature experiences this week.  We went to our local Bird Sanctuary this week.  The kids love going to this park because of one particular climbing tree.  They love to climb this tree and find the perfect place to watch the wildlife.

It is a perfect place to hang out on a really hot summer day.  The shade of the sanctuary must bring the temperature down by 10 degrees.  Once the children stopped giggling and climbing and settled down, we started spotting some wildlife.  We saw lots of turtles, squirrels, tadpoles, ducks, geese, and Cardinals.  We also heard a bullfrog that was really making a ruckus.  We never could see him but we sure could hear him for about 10 minutes.

The kids can't wait to go back later this summer and see if all the tadpoles are changing.  I think they were bullfrog tadpoles which take a long time to change.

We also finished up our unit study on butterflies.  The kids loved watching the stages of a butterfly's life cycle.

Now go see some great show and tell's with Canadagirl.

Blessings,

Dawn

Our Summer Plans....

Posted in Friday show and tell

Our summer plans for $70 or less....  I want to really find as much free fun this summer so that we can quickly empty our credit card again.  After 2 years of having no credit card debt, several situations all at once forced us to end up with close to $1000 on our credit card.  I want it gone by September!  We will be cutting corners all over the place to make this happen.  So we will be having as fun and as cheap as possible summer.  Why $70 you say?  That is what came in a check of forgotton earned money last week.  So here is my overall plan.

First, we will continue learning time and tea time each day.  For learning time, the kids will be working in their summer workbooks (I tore up old workbooks and put them in a three ring binder in accordance with each child's weaknesses), play lots of learning games and continue reading lessons.

Do ignore the chocolate on dd's face.  We worked on writing our address in chocolate soy whip cream right after breakfast!

I picked up most of these games from back-to-school sales at Walmart last year.  The kids love them.

We will also be doing a one day unit study for Flag Day, a study of butterflies vs. moths, and whatever other rabbit trails my kiddos lead me down. LOL!

For tea time we are reading ~

Our next book will be  Five Little Peppers and How They Grew.

We will also be playing outside a lot doing this~

and catching things like this to study~

I have a long list of out of the home activities~

  • library programs
  • adoption play group, which will be meeting at parks in our area
  • our local lake with beach ~ $20 for one month unlimited admittance
  • art museum on free day (first Wednesday of the month)
  • nature center ~ free to us since Timothy volunteers there
  • North Carolina Arboretum ~ free on Tuesdays
  • Fun Depot ~ an arcade and fun center ~ I have a great coupon for $10 free play time when you spend $10
  • free Red Cross swimming lessons for Goldilocks at the end of June
  • Botanical Gardens with awesome stream to play in ~free
  • Montreat park which the kids call the waterfall playground because it is surrounded by mini waterfalls
  • hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • ice Cream out at night ~ when it is dark~ my kids love dark summer nights ~ $15
  • Fourth of July downtown ~ free
  • fireflies and toasted marshmellows
  •  free movie camp ~ we can make it to most of the 8 weeks of movies
  • Children's Museum on free day
  • berry picking ~ only cost is the price of the berries
  • Chuckie Cheese ~ just for the games and rides ~ I'll watch for a great coupon on the internet that will make it an afternoon of fun for $10  (only if our adoption group goes there one day) .
  • movie night at home once a week with movies from library or Redbox ~ $1 to free

Lastly, we will be concentrating on the garden and doing chores with a happy spirit!  This is more challenging for one than for the others.  Anyhoo!  we will muddle on with the chores thing.  They will all have good work ethic by the time they are grown up -- even if it kills me!

So what are you all doing this summer? To see more great Show and Tells, hop over to www.homeschoolblogger.com/canadagirl.

Blessings,

Friday Show and Tell ~ Routine Chart

Posted in Friday show and tell

Welcome to another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.

I have struggled for some time now to establish a schedule/routine for our family.  The main problem is that every day is different in our home.   I kept getting stuck with the time thing. We can't do the same thing at 10 am everyday because we are not in the same place at 10 am everyday, or any other particular time either.  We are not a family that has the luxury of staying home day after day.   We have doctor/therapy appointents several days a week and, during Tomatis loops, every single day for hours on end.  Then there are the classes in which this year each child had a choice of one class outside the home.  We often find ourselves struggling through a hectic day in which I have to force one of my children through many transitions.  Did I mention that transistions are very, very difficult for two of my kiddos?  Anyhoo, I finally struck on a schedule chart that is working for us.

Each night I check the weather and calendar for the next day.  Then I pull out the 36 cards that I made (so far) and put them in order on our schedule for that day. Then during breakfast we review the plans for today.  During the day, the kids can go back and check the chart.  It is really helping them know what is coming next.  It really helps to reduce reducing fussing about what they had thought up to do versus what we need to do.  Everyone is much happier and things are going much more smoothly.

I made them by using cardstock and velcro on the back.  This was so simple and cheap.  I think it cost me $3.00 for everything.

Blessings,

Dawn

Show and Tell Friday ~ He's DONE!

Posted in Friday show and tell

It time for another Show and Tell Friday.

The big teen finished his last subject today and is officially done with High School!!!!!!!!  You just can not imagine my excitement and relief!  We made it!!  He will be having a big graduation ceremony with many other homeschoolers from around the state on May 23 at the homeschool convention.  However, I just had to do something to celebrate tonight!  We dropped the big teen off at Fencing class and scurried off to the store to buy a cake and some balloons.  I used to drive my poor dear husband crazy doing  things impromptu like this, but he is used to me now.  When we got home, we decorated a little and waited for the big teen to come home.  When he came through the door, we yelled SURPRISE!  Boy, did we get him.  He never saw his little party coming.

After cake and ice cream (another cheat on the special diet), we went outside to get even with that boy for all the complaining over school assingments to have a silly string war.

Get him children!

CONGRATS, SON!  We are proud of you.

Friday Show and Tell~Gotcha Day!

Posted in Friday show and tell

It is time for another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.

Today is "Gotcha Day" for my ds, Tom Sawyer.  For those not familiar with adoption phrases, Gotcha Day is the day that your adopted child comes home.  For our children, Gotcha Day is much more special than the day that their adoption was finalized (2 years and almost 2 months later) because they were so young they do not see the difference between being our foster children and being our adopted forever children.  To them it is only important when they got to us and were safe.  Seven years ago today, we got the call for our little guy.  He was two days old and very sick.  When the social worker arrived with him, I remarked about his redness.   I was sure something was wrong with him, and the social worker insisted that he was just a crack addicted preemie. (He was diagnosised with polycythemia a few days later due to birh trauma and too much blood flowing back into his body from the placenta not being removed for many hours). Here is one of the very first pictures of our little guy.  The photo does not do that good of a job of showing how red he was.  A funny note~We have told Tom Sawyer for years that he looked like a lobster when he was born.  We, of course, meant in color.  However, he was very disappointed when he realized today that he did not look like a real lobster! LOL!

Here he is sitting next to his baby box.  He really likes to see how much he has grown each year.

My ds does not really like music, but when he heard this song he fell in love with it.  He asked us to play it several times in a row.

Today for "Gothcha Day"  we will go through the baby books and his baby box of clothes.  He will also be allowed to pick his breakfast at McDonald's (forget the diet).

HAPPY GOTCHA DAY, OUR SWEET BOY!  YOU ARE SUCH A BLESSING TO US!!!

Blessings,

Dawn

Friday Show and Tell ~ What Season Is It???

Posted in Friday show and tell

A few days ago, the kids were complaining that "school" was out for the next month or so...  Yes, you read that right.  Some of my kiddos have trouble with transitions.  I do intend to do reading, tea time stories, and math for the next few weeks.  However, the rest of the time is Spring/Summer fun for the littles.  Did they want this change in routine?  Not a chance.  However, they are coming around to my way of thinking ....

"Ahhh! Rest and relaxation.... This is The Life, Mom!"

"Yeah, I can get into this hanging around the pool ...urr... water table thing..."

However, boys and girls do not agree on how to relax!

"Hey, What does this thing do?"

"Oh! Now this is The Life!!!  I love this thing!"

"Alright, I am going for a dip in my pool...urr.... water table but don't let that sprinkler water touch me!"

I hope you all have a blessed weekend.  We will be outside!

To see more great Show and Tell's, hop on over to Canadagirl.

It is time for another Show and Tell with Mary .  Go over and see all the great entries.

We had a great field trip this week.  It was Homeschool Day at the Biltmore Estate .   The estate does a great job of making this day fun, affordable and educational for homeschool families.  I highly recommend it if you ever have the chance to go.  They do a Homeschool Day in the spring and fall, with a different theme each time.  The theme this time was how the Biltmore uses science and math in the Estate's everyday life.   We started off the morning at the education booths.  The kids learned about erosion, forestry, orienteering, birds of prey, quilting, butter making, honeybees, and water power.  They were given thick workbooks with loads of info and things to do at home, based on what they learned today.  We will have fun with the workbooks over the next few days.

Tom Sawyer loved quilt planning.  He could have stayed at that display for a long time.

The kids got to make their own compass.  We did not get too lost while we tried to find the proper coordinates. LOL!

Churning butter is always fun for a little while.  We were surprised to learn that old-fashioned churning took about 5 hours.  Yikes...

When we were done with the booths we moved onto a picnic lunch and the barn animals.  One of the cool things about Biltmore is that it has always strived to be a fully sustainable Estate.  To this day, they are fully private and receive no federal funds. (And some of the Vanderbilt family still lives in a closed-off part of the home.)  The kids loved playing with all of the baby animals.

After the barn, we headed for the house.  The kids were not able to imagine how big the house was going to be.  They were amazed when it came into view.

To my relief, the children behaved well in the house.  We saw 55 of the rooms in Biltmore.  There are many more rooms that are not open for viewing!  The kids were given I Spy Maps to search for things throughout the rooms.  What a great idea.  They loved it and found almost everything.  My children really liked the bowling alley, observatory and pool inside the house!  What I liked was the huge library.  I think it was as big as one of the floors of my home ... at least!  I need that library attached to my house.

After we had a nice snack in the Biltmore courtyard and toured the gift shops, we were off to the extensive gardens.  They were lovely.  A sea of tulips as far as you could see.

We did not do the winery, since we do not drink alcohol in our family and don't want to encourage it to our children.  It was truly a lovely day.  I had really worried and planned on how my Sensory Processing Disorder boy, Tom Sawyer, was going to survive the day.  He did a great job.  I didn't have to use half the OT/Sensory stuff I had packed in the car.  He only needed his weighted blanket for about 5 minutes. Woo Hoo.  It was really a successful and pleasant day.

Blessings,

Dawn

Spring has come to our homeschool ...

Posted in Friday show and tell

Ahhh! Spring is here!  I love this time of year when we get to see the earth waking up after a long winter.  Of course, we have exciting things going on in our learning, too.  The kids were very excited to find a new package on the front steps the other day.  Inside was all of this fun springtime loot.

Yes, we will soon be hatching 75 to 200 Praying Mantis and 5 or so butterflies!  The kids are very anxious to see the transformations occur.

Here is our Praying Mantis cage all set up.  Now we just need to keep the house warm enough for 3 weeks.

I also love to see my little guy building muscles and work ethic in the garden.  Here he is with his Dad, turning the soil so that we can start planting.

We also are pulling out all of our books on bunnies.  We have about 9 books on rabbits.  I have two children who are very much in love with rabbits.  I am planning a mini-unit study for science on bunnies.  I think I will add in a bit of bunny math, too.  I am going to put down a chalk number line outside and have them hop on it.  If you hop to the 3 and then hop 4 more what number are you on?  You get the idea. Our favorite bunny book is The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.  We do not teach that the Easter Bunny is real, of course.  They understand that the bunny in this story is a fairytale.  However, I love how this book teaches about family togetherness, work ethics, doing your chores with a cheerful heart and perseverance.  I like to read this book before we do a day of sorting and Spring cleaning.

The kids dyed eggs today and are hoping to blow eggs and dye more next week.  I was thinking of maybe trying some candle wax to jazz them up a bit.

Friday Show and Tell~Games, Games, Games...

Posted in Friday show and tell

It's time for another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.

We love games in our family.  My kids were so excited when a friend gave us the game Horton Hears a Who! .  They could not wait to get home from their play date to play it.

No wonder this game has won so many awards.  It kept my kids busy for 1 1/2 hours the first day.  After setting up the board and hiding the clovers, the players move around the board and have to wear the Horton hat when it is time to go out and find a clover.  My kids hid the clovers all over the first floor of our home.  Then the player must pick up the clover with their Horton hat only.  What a great game.  Not only does it include some thinking skills but physical skills as well.  It is also great for the wiggly child who needs to move around often.

We were also lucky to find the game, Money Matters A Christian Finacial Game, at a yard sale for 50 cents.  It was brand new!!  The big teen and I had a good time playing it.  It did take about two hours to complete the game but was a great review of what we are already teaching about budgeting.

Blessings,

Our Unit Study on Money

Posted in Friday show and tell

It's time for another Show and Tell with Canadagirl.

We finished Ancient Greece on Monday and are moving onto a unit study on money.  My goals for this unit is to get the little ones (especially Goldilocks) to understand the names and values of coins and how to add them up to a dollar.  To make this unit more challenging for Tom Sawyer (who already knows all of the coins values and how to add them up), I am making this a math/literature study.  We will be reading My Rows And Piles Of Coins by Tololwa M. Mollel, which is a great book about a little boy in Africa who tries to save up enough money to buy a bike so he can help his mother get to the market easier.  We will make a lapbook to go along with this book. Tom Sawyer will be doing a lot of advanced money combinations and working on understanding banking skills.  He also is very interested in saving his allowance and has been doing a good job of it.   All of the children will work on paying for things and making correct change.  Tom Sawyer will also work on learning the value of special coins (half dollar and such).  It has become obvious that Tom Sawyer is going to have to break away from the girls in his lessons very soon.  He often already knows what I am about to teach, and I don't even know where he learned the info.  School work comes so easily to him.  Little Red Ridinghood is learning fine in her Kindergarten materials and Goldilocks (age 8) with all her special issues is working below Kindergarten in some areas and a bit more into Kindergarten in others.  I am really starting to see that Tom Sawyer is being held back in some areas, and I will have to either do his lessons separately or do more advanced multi-level teaching than I have been doing.   I will see if I can do the advanced multi-level teaching with him in this unit study.

(Our unit study corner)

We kicked off this unit study by going to our local hands-on museum to see Moneyville!  The kids had a blast in this special exhibit, and it ties in so nicely with our unit study.  We plan to go back at least another time before it leaves.

The girls loved being bank tellers.  After about an hour of playing in Moneyville, Goldilocks could tell me how many quarters were in a dollar .  That does not mean she will remember it this morning, but she did know the correct answer for a while.

Tom Sawyer got some help from his big brother at the Lemonade stand.  They were making a very nice profit by the time they were through.

They had lots of self-correcting puzzles to help the kids learn their money values.  Puzzles are one of Little Red Ridinghood's favorite things.  Overall, it was a great exhibit and a wonderful kick off to our unit study.

Friday Show and Tell~ Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

Posted in Friday show and tell

A few days ago, we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday.  We read lots of Dr. Seuss stories and talked in rhyme for the fun of it.  We made a lapbook with lots of Dr. Seuss stickers and lots of Dr. Seuss math pages.  The real highlight of the day was making our own Dr. Seuss playdough characters.  The kids loved making these.  It kept them busy for a long time, which I really appreciated.  I was still a bit slow that day from the flu and needed anything that would slow down the kiddos.

Allergy side note ~ Did you know that store bought Play-Doh can cause a gluten allergy?  A few weeks ago when we were at the begining of our allergy journey, Tom Sawyer reacted to playing with Play-Doh.  This time he used plastic gloves most of the time.  I washed his hands very well after he was done.  No reaction this time, thank goodness.   I think his little body is getting stronger, and he can take tiny little bits of exposure.  However, we won't be racing out to test that theory much

We finished off our Dr. Seuss day with a video of The Cat and The Hat and a meal made of green eggs and ham.  Green eggs are a big hit.  They taste the same, don't you know!  We may have to have them again for St. Patricks day.

Blessings,

Dawn
