Harvest!

Thanks!
The farmers renting our fields finally harvested them!! I'm glad, because now I get all that land to ride on. Great spot for galloping *grin*.
I think the farmers have dayjobs, because they did most of the harvesting at night. Dad and I had a fun time playing with my camera, getting shots of them in the dark. Tripods are a huge help *nodnod*.

Fun fun. I was standing out there in the cold- I had been in too much of a hurry to grab a jacket- and loving every chilly second of it ;-)
And then even better-- they didn't finish the fields, so they parked their equipment and went home!! Of course I couldn't pass up a free photoshoot standing in my field, now, could I?

Earlier the sky had been a dull, cloudy grey...so I had to wait and wait. But in the meantime I rode Becky, so I didn't mind ;-)

Beans, beans, and more....beans.

Yes. It is huge. I felt like a two-year-old standing next to it.
And no- I wasn't laying on the ground to get these shots. Our neighbors were outside in plain view and I didn't feel like making a total fool of myself at the moment. So I was "shooting blind", so to speak- I knelt down, put my camera right next to the ground and shot upwards without knowing for sure what I was getting.

This was the first time I'd been able to get an up-close and personal look at this sort of equipment. I had a blast with all sorts of odd angles.

Yes...it's the tires of a John Deere tractor *sheepish grin*. The light was too good to pass up. If it hadn't been for the lighting, it would have been B-O-R-I-N-G.

And again, I took this more for the lighting than the subject matter. I love how the backlighting makes all the little hairs glow...lighting is definetly a photographer's best friend!

Even in a park and a cemetery. ;-)
Well, my great-grandma's birthday was a few weeks ago, so we took her out for the day, along with my grandma, my aunt, and her kids. It was fun!
GZ (nickname for my great-grandma) had been wanting to show us where some ancestors were buried, so we went to a cemetery. The boys thought that was really morbid, lol.
Then we went out for lunch and went to a really nice park!
And, of course, I had my camera. *grin*

(note: I have no idea who the person who's name is on that tombstone is... I just liked the lichen ;-) )
The cemetery was way out in the middle of nowhere, and very cool, for a graveyard.

I liked the...stark loneliness of these two photos...I don't know why, but they kind of grabbed me, begging to be taken.

And this was really fun :-) Great lights/darks, and I loved the repetition. I used a really shallow DOF, I love throwing things out of focus and leaving only one or two things clear.
So, anyway...we had a fun time.

I've heard the Photography Flu is catching...

Lol. It's had me caught for a long time :-D

A beautiful bunch of flowers I came across when I went to Shipshewana with the girls in my family! It was such a hoot- seven people in one hotel room! At least it was only for one night, we got to laughing so loud so many times that my grandma was worried we were bothering other people :-)

Yep, it's a grain elevator! Also from Shipshewana, and a very common sight in the Midwest!! If you ever go to Shipshewana, you have to go to JoJo's Pretzels. The best soft pretzel on the planet!

A hot-air balloon landed in our neighbor's field! It was really neat, and I got tons of photos. I like the graphic look of this one, it's a close-up of the balloon pattern.

Our other neighbor's Mustang, Dakota. He has a really sweet, friendly personality ( I want to ride their horses :-D ).

And their fence...*sheepish grin*. I used a wide f/stop, and got a pretty neat picture, at least, I like it! (No, I wasn't trespassing, lol. We had been invited to their house for a get-together)

Yeah...shoes. *even more sheepish* Grabbed this shot at a local park. We were wading in a creek (yes, I had my camera with me, and the tripod! I know, I'm bad...but the camera didn't get wet!), and Mom said "Why don't you get the shoes lined up on the rocks?" So I did, and I'm glad she suggested it!

Pilot Guy :-D I liked his stance, and took several candid shots of him...then found out they were fuzzy. So, I called him back over and made him strike the same pose! He wasn't too excited...but did it anyway ;-) (Thanks, PG!)
Well...I need to go feed the animals...and muck a stall.

For about two months, I have been stalking two local camera store's websites, looking for an used, affordable "big" lens in good condition. At least, anything significantly larger than the 18-55mm that came with my camera. It doesn't go very far :-D
Last Saturday I found "the one", but when I called...they were already closed until Monday. Their branch store didn't have the information on it, and I was told I couldn't put it on hold. So, first thing Monday morning (one minute after they opened :-D, lol) I called and found that it would work for my camera!!
A Vivitar lens with a Canon mount, it was a 28-300mm for only....$85!!!! I bought it!
But later that day I heard Mom on the phone. It was the camera shop. The lens had been put on hold by someone else.
I was so dissapointed, until Mom finished her sentence-
They had a ProMaster lens, same good condition, would fit my camera, same focal length for an even better price of $65!! Talk about a God-Thing.
I got it yesterday and I love it!!!! Only thing is that it wiggles a lot when I have it zoomed out all the way, so the next thing on my list is a mono-pod. I think one of those would be a lot easier to carry around than a tri-pod because there is only one leg to deal with :-)
I have photographs on my camera, so I'll have to unload them this weekend and post a few. And take a pic of my lens :-D
It is such fun to have a lot of zoom!!! It'll be a blast at re-enactments, basketball games, horse shows, etc.

music, guns and fireworks
Note: All photos, posts and stories on this blog are my sole property and copyrighted to myself and My Camera and I unless otherwise noted. They may not be copied for any reason without written permission from me. If you would like to copy something, please ask me first!
Thanks!
Last Thursday, Dad and Mom took Pilot Guy, History Boy and myself to a symphony at Conner Prairie!! It was SO fun!!! They had a lot of re-enactors there, and a group of them carried the flags during part of the program.
I, as usual, had my camera. Yes, I am addicted to photography. And proud of it!! :-D
Well, I took a lot of pictures and had fun playing with the different settings to get the correct one for taking firework pictures. Before that, though, I got some other photos...including some of the cannons that were used for one song!

I like the canisters/shells that held the blanks they fired. They made for some interesting shots. Pun intended. :-D

Now, those were some big guns!! I hadn't seen "modern" cannons before, so it was neat. Personally, I'd take a semi-automatic .22 over one of those any day. ;-D
I love reenacting! I think it would be a blast to do some day!

You can see I like the swords...

For this one (same as first sword photo), I drug the Contrast slider all the way over to the right. I know it would look bad horrible with most photos, but I think it kind of works here. Sort of gives it an old daguerreotype feel, or something!
Now...on to the fireworks!
I set my tripod up for these, because I was using 25-30 second exposures. Think of the camera shake I would have gotten if I hadn't used a tripod!! So I wouldn't be in people's way, I set it up at the branching of an asphalt path, behind people. I told Dad I probably sounded like an idiot-I was standing there all by myself giggling with glee when I saw some of cool photos I was getting!! :-D

Wahoo!! I love fireworks :-D
These are two of my favorites I got. I liked using the really long shutter speed - that way I could still enjoy the show! All I had to do was click the shutter button every 25 or 30 seconds and leave it alone ;-)

At the moment I am...uploading pictures to my photoubucket, helping History Boy stamp a letter, and...eating Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans!!!! Yum. A perfect mix *grabs a few more out of the box and pops them into mouth* :-D
I'd better stop eating them or Dad won't let me have more for a few days ;-) It was one of his Father's Day gifts after all...
Anyway, I am yet again in a photography-posting mood :-). Bear with me.

I just loved the light when I took this one, and the contrast between the green of the leaves and the red of the eggs. I have no idea what sort of bug, butterfly or moth larvae hatched from them :-)

Yep. It's a baseball mitt. I think I got laughed at for taking this one, Dad thought I was a little nutty :-). But I think it turned out really well. I don't think Dad's seen it, just saw me holding it up in front of my camera.

Becky's saddle and old bridle :-)

Race Car Dude's boots :-).
I took these as a possibilities for a photo contest, but entered something else.
I still like them, especially the last one.
*Radio Announcer Voice* "Well...that's all for now, folks!"

photography zone: enter at your own risk!!!

I haven't entered anything under the "photography" category for a while, have I?
Well, looks like I need to remedy that.
I am learning more and more about how to control how I take my pictures and depending less and less on the Program mode. I hardly ever use the "evil green box", formally known as Intelligent Auto anymore ;-). A photographer friend of mine called it the evil green box. And it is. It is so bossy and is always popping up the on-camera flash :-D. I don't like that either.
My favorite mode is currently the Aperture Priority Mode. I love shallow depth of field in most of my pictures, and am always pushing it to the shallowest depth I can get in whatever lighting I happen to be in.
I absolutely hate bad lighting with a vengeance. It is so annoying. I hate the bad-blur photos and needing to use the flash. I much prefer morning/afternoon sunlight :-). Unfortunately, I usually have little control over the lighting. Unless I shoot "studio" style with some fabric or foam board for a backdrop and an old goose-neck lamp for side lighting :-).

Isn't he/she just darling?!?!?! Grandma accidentally found it and it's siblings while weeding around a tree. She said '"If I had thrust my trowel down there and killed them, I would have just died!"'
I got probably twenty pictures of the cute little fellow :-)

Thanks again, grandma!
She found this nest in another one of her trees :-). Recently she has been calling me whenever she finds something interesting that I would like to photograph. She lives directly in front of us, so it's really convenient :-)

Her front steps ;-D, lol.
What can I say? I love the texture :-)

*Sheepish grin*. Grandma's birdbath. :-D
Again, love the colors, pattern, and texture :-)
At the Park
Yesterday (despite the heat), we met both my grandma's, my aunt, and her three little kids at a local park for lunch. Arby's had free sandwiches with purchase of a drink, so we just swung through the drive-thru and brought some chips and Oreos :-)
The kids all had a blast ;-)
They had this giant swing that looked like an over-sized Frisbee. I swung on that for a while and could have taken a nap on it :-D, it was so comfortably relaxing.
(Hang on, had to turn up the radio- a Michael W. Smith song I've never heard before ;-) Who on earth is he singing with?)
*Ahem*, back on topic. There was also this cool thing-a-ma-jig that was like a conical rope ladder, it was over 10' tall and at the base it was probably 5' wide. If you stood on the ground outside of it and grabbed on, you could run it around and spin it. I alternately held my youngest cousin on my lap and let her ride, and helped my brother spin it for my younger brothers, cousins, and other little kids there.

The rock wall was also popular :-)

My cousin braving the rock wall.
"Hannah, count and tell me how many seconds it takes me to climb to the top!"
[me counting]
[before he gets halfway up, he jumps down and tries again. This time he makes it]
"How long did it take?"
"Umm...I didn't count the second time. Around 10 seconds?"
[he sighs and grins]
"Hannah...I wanted to know..."
[I grin back, thinking either he should have made it up the first time, or asked me to count both times :-D]
Well...I gotta sign off.

~Hannah

Wow. I saw an angel. Just kidding, I saw the Navy group the Blue Angels on Sunday afternoon. And...a few of the gazillion pictures I took are ready to post!!

Dad had my camera during the finale, and I combined a bunch of the images to make a slideshow/animation. This was at the very end of the air show, so I guess you could say I am going backwards :-)

Call me weird if you want, but the plane and helicopter above were perfect for some macro-esque photography :-)

I love this hat!!! (and no one was wearing it, so I could shoot with a really shallow depth of field and play with the composition :-) )

The Blue Angels's transport jet, nicknamed "Fat Albert". If I remember correctly, it has rocket-powered engines.

The Blue Angels!!!
Gotta go...

Finally, Sunshine!!
Hurray!!! Today the sun is out and shining, and we only got a tiny sprinkle of rain :-). Our yard is so green it looks like a golf course, and the grass is slowly coming back into Becky's pasture.
Poor girl, I've kept her out of it for the past week or so because it's so muddy, and I don't want it all torn up and grass-less before summer even starts. So...she has been staying in the pen up near the barn (which is more like a little pasture than a pen...), and rolling in all the mud.
As soon as I get the camera chip unloaded (tonight or tomorrow), I am going to post about the best way in the entire world to top your pancakes. Lol, I know it sounds a little weird...but just wait and see.
I finished a book I'd been reading for school today, "God King", by Joanne Williamson, the same lady that wrote "Hittite Warrior". It was good, and I liked it. Based during the days of King Hezekiah, the main character is Taharka, a minor prince of Egypt who it crowned Pharaoh.
He helps Hezekiah and his ambassador, Amos, almost gets killed...uncovers a plot against him, has a run-in with the Assyrian's and all sorts of stuff!! It was a neat book...but it was weird how the Egyptians thought that their pharaoh was a god and such, they were afraid to even look at him lest they become blinded by the radiance they thought shone from his face.
I tried some flower photography "studio style" several weeks ago, I am pretty pleased with the results!! An old desk lamp with a goose-neck made great side lighting :-)

Mom got both bouquets at the grocery store for a dollar or two a piece!!!
Well...got to go,

Rodeo Time!
Last week, I got invited to go to a Horse Fair, and...*drumroll* a Rodeo!!!!
It was so fun...I took lots of photos, but, regretably, the lighting was odd most of the time so all my action pictures are either blurred or have some digital noise.
In a few, though, the blur looks really cool.
I took a video of the Wild Cow Milking (I don't know how to post it yet...), and I showed it to Dad. He heard me hollering in the background (it's like when you ride a rollercoaster- half the fun is yelling) and asked me if I was now hick. I am not hick, I was just having a good time ;-).
So, thanks a lot, J, V and KJ for inviting me!!! It was so fun...
Hear are some of the pictures...

This little dynamo was in the Parade of Stallions. He is a Miniture Horse, but he doesn't know how small he really is!! He was rearing up, prancing and neighing. KJ and I got a kick out of his whinny, it was so high-pitched, it sounded more like a newborn foal than a stallion.

This handsome fella was also in the Parade of Stallions. He is a Gypsy Cob, isn't he pretty, I mean, handsome? He was of medium/small height with a thick mane and tail and lots of feathering on his lower legs.

I think this was one of the sharpest photos I took that day. The lighting was good, and they weren't moving! You should have seen the vendor halls....tons and tons of horse-related stuff. Most of which, I couldn't have afforded if I had wanted to buy it.
I did good, though. I just bought a mane comb (some of the teeth are broken in Becky's old one) and a cute jacket that was on sale for $20.00.
I guess that's pretty good, considering all I could have bought. I think it helps to have a budget :-).

Boots, anyone? There were hundreds upon hundreds...all colors, prices and sizes!! Some were so tall I think they would have come up to my knees.

There were also hundreds upon hundreds of saddles...some were beautiful, some (I thought) ugly, and all waaay too expensive. It's a good thing I don't need one.
Yes...even at a Horse Fair I shoot macro...it's an addiction.

Look at his moustache!!! I'd never seen a horse with a moustache before...
Can anyone loan him a razor? No...he looks kind of cute with his wild little moustache :-)

Yes, she is wearing a Poodle Skirt. They were riding to the music of Grease (no, I didn't know that...I was told that ;-) ) and she even had the shoes to match!!
Friesians are beautiful...

Look out!! Rodeo time!
It was a lot of fun to watch the cowboys ride the broncos, and, thankfuly no one got hurt doing it! It wouldn't have been so fun then...
If you look closely, you might be able to see that the cowboy is wearing glasses.

Your teams' mission:
To chase, rope and tie down two scared yearlings weighing in at around 500lbs apeice. All in the space of two (or was it three? I forget.) minutes. Oh, and when you tie three of the calf's legs together, he has to stay tied for at least six seconds.
Think it's easy? Think again.

They all gave it their best. And, for the man in the black hat, that meant holding his dirty rope inbetween his teeth!!!

Time is running low...and the calfs DO NOT like being thrown to the ground and tied up. One of the guys ended up beneath a calf at one point.
At least if you are a kid and you want to try this, you use a small goat.

Wild cow milking...what will they think of next? They had to rope her, hold her still, and get even just a few drops of milk into a bottle.
A few drops is all they got.
One guy did get hurt in this event, he tripped and hurt his knee.
One of the cows was so mean and mad that she chased the team trying to milk her, and about flipped a horse over in the process!!

I really, really like this photo!! J said it looked like something you would see as a poster.
In this event, they were trying to get two yearlings and one horse loaded into a trailer and themselves in the truck in the space of two or three minutes. And they, as a team, could only throw two loops.

This was either the Team Penning or the event I described above.

What a pretty Bay!! Looks spunky too :-)

He was close enough that I was able to use flash for this one. That's why it doesn't look grainy.
I like the energy and action :-)
Well...that's all the Rodeo photos I'm going to post! I took several hundred (I honestly had to...I'm bitten, you know, by the Photography Bug. And one of the side effects is exsessive photo taking. lol), but not very many of them turned out well...oh well, you can't control the lighting everywhere you go...just have to take it as you find it.

White Balance, Does It Do Anything?
Yes, it does!!!
It can do a lot!!!
A week or so ago, I was playing around with my camera and decided to see if I could get any good pictures of two of my rings.
I know, it is kind of an odd subject...still, I set up some poster board for the floor and background and shot one. Looking at it on the LCD, I decided I didn't like how the light affected the colors.
So...I thought to try changing the White Balance setting. I am really glad I did!!
The only problem is that I forget what setting I used for what picture!!! I should have written it down...but, I thought that it would be recorded in the image properties. I just looked and it isn't :-(. At least not in the program I opened it in...

So...the focus is a little off on the bottom one, but I like the blue color a lot better than the top one. It looks cooler than the plain white.

Trails, Trees and Family Fun
Two Fridays ago, it was so nice that Dad took half a day off work and we went to a park not far from us and walked one of the trails. Of course, I was carrying the camera with me :-).
Surprisingly, there was a lot of photogenic stuff in the woods even before anything had greened up.
The only drawback was that the colors are rather dull and not very striking.

There were a lot of twisty vines and roots, I thought they made for a neat subject.

I liked how the two leaves that are in focus are a different shade of bronze-ish brown than the rest of the leaves.

After about twenty tries at getting nice, silky water, I couldn't get a decent one. I think it's because I didn't have the tripod. Out of all those photos, this is the "best" one, and it's not very good!

Can anyone see the alligator head?! Okay, okay, so it's not really an alligator....but I almost got you!
Of course, there are no wild alligators (at least, not unless someone lets a zoo one out!) in the Midwest, but that half-submerged log looks kind of like one!!

Just as Dad said "Enough pictures for now, Hannah. Turn it off," I got this picture!
I know, it's more old wood and rusty fencing, but I like it :-).

Okay...so, I was wrong. I just found more "good" ones. I think that is all the water ones now.

Aren't these steps neat?! They led up to a nature center.

Trees, trees and more trees...I like 'em!

What do you think of this weird fungus? Mom saw it and thought it was neat. I did too, and thought it would look good on (digital) film.
I have more pictures...but I'd better stop!

Perspective and Experimentation
Okay!! I know I have hundreds of photos in my numerous picture files (several weeks ago I spent some time over the course of a few days organizing them by genre...now I can finally find what I want when I want it!) that I could post, but, here are a few of my newest ones-photos from this weekend.
On the outdoor ones, I was messing around with Manual Focus. They looked good on the LCD screen, but when I put them onto the computer, I realized I had a LOT of duds...oh well, I'll get better.
The others were taken when Dad and I went to the health food store. We also made a stop at a bakery, an almost unheard of stop...because we don't have any near where we usually shop. My first reaction when I walked into the bakery was "Wow, this place smells amazing!!" And it did.
Dad and I each got a snack, and then got a treat to bring home. I choose a glazed doughnut, it was soooo good, ten times better than Krispy Kreme, which is really saying something!!!

I accidentally re-sized this one a little too small...but I still like the colors and how the old Queen Anne is in silhouette.

Much better size!! This was one of my best MF pics that I took last night, but then again, the only ones I'm posting are the ones that turned out... :-) someday I'll have to post some of my bad pictures.

I liked the light, shadow and texture on the tree :-), so I took a close-up!!

Even dead flowers can be photographed!! I love the rather dusky blue sky behind them.

For some reason, I like the look of the old, weathered fence post and rusty cattle panel. I don't know why, but, it turned out.

Having a sunset for a background is such a neat effect...and Sunday night it wasn't too intense, just right for the type of pictures I was taking!
Here are Saturday's pictures-some of them, lol.

I know, odd subject. But, I did get perspective, which was what I was after.

Same as the last photo-I was after perspective!! Things all neatly in a row work nicely for that effect ;-)

Yum...delicious!! They taste better then they look :). Hungry yet?

My Shot At A Contest
This is the second photography contest I've ever entered!! I took it several months ago, but got it sent in last month.
It is one held yearly for homeschoolers in my area. I am hoping for at least an Honorable Mention, but if I don't get anything, that's okay because it will still be displayed. And besides, there is a whole lot more to life than winning a photo contest!
I had to do a still life, this is one of the many I took, and it was hard to decide what one to enter ;-).
The old Bible (how I love the well-worn look of it!) belonged to either my great grandma or my great-great grandma, I don't remember which one at the moment...
The necklace is mine, and I had the rose petals because about two weeks before, Dad gave Mom flowers :-).
I shot it on our kitchen table with some white fabric covering the table and poster board in the back.

Getting Creative
A month or so ago, inspired by a tutoriol Emily at Simplyvintagegirl.com posted, I took some of my photos, tweaked a few of them, and overlaid words in our photosoftware. It was a lot of fun, and I really like the look of them.
I think the basketball net is my favorite, along with the sunflower (which is one of my all-time favorite photos, a happy accident which will probably make a future post!), and the guitar.

These are all my own photos, I didn't find these on the internet :-).
With the path, the wild grapes, and the purple cone flowers I tweaked the colors a bit to get them more toned down so the words were readable. And with the jugs I straightened the photo, cropped and turned it to black-and-white. Other then that, I don't think I changed anything...I'm not crazy about editing a whole lot, other then cropping. I have learned how to clone backgrounds, though, and on a few other shots, it's been a lifesaver!!

I'm no Audubon...but...
I do have some bird photos!!
The swans and the duck were taken at a local park, and the humming bird was shot through my living room window. The baby birds were in our gully, their nest was in a little bushy sapling and I was literally two feet or less away from them!!

Aren't they sweet? They were perfect models ;-)

I completely, totally love this one!! The shadowing, the way his/her (?) neck and head is curved down…
I cropped in tighter on the original image to get this, it makes a HUGE difference!

No wow factor here, but I still like this one anyway. Swans always manage to look so graceful.

Humming Birds are hard to photograph! I took around fifteen (at least) photos of this little guy, and I got only two or three decent ones! It was worth the sorting and editing though, I really like these.

I know this one is just plain goofy...but that's why I took it (I still kind of like it anyway...)! I had seen some pictures of bright blue bird's feet and thought they were unique angles...and since we don't have any blue footed birds around here, I settled for orange, lol. Incase you are thinking "what type of bird has honest-to-goodness blue feet"; I think they were called Blue Footed Boobies...I know, I know, weird name, but that's what I read in the photo book where I saw them. :-)

One of the best photo-ops I've had a chance to go to!!
A totally neat place to visit...that is, if you like history and plenty of neat stuff to photogragh, I like both!
I took a LOT of pictures that day... most of them were good to some degree, although the lighting in a few places made it hard to get good, sharp photos, and I don't like to use the flash.
So, I'll post some of my favorites with a bit about each one.
My Cabin Trio-
I didn't realize how neat of an angle I could get by not shooting the complete building!
The one with the three tree trunks in front is my least favorite, and the one with the red brick chimney is the one I like the best. I actually did a watercolor recently based on it. The fall leaves really add to it, I think. They give it a mood and a definite place and I love the old look of the weathered wood.

Pots ‘n Crocks-
There is pottery EVERYWHERE!! You can’t go five minutes without seeing something made of clay. That’s okay, though, because they look really good in pictures! I like how the light hits them with sort of a sheen.

Got Sheep?
LOL. I just thought this pair was a cute addition to my collection of Conner Prairie pics, even though I couldn’t get good shoots of them because of the fence running between us! I like the ram’s curly horns and the folds in their wool.

Old glass-
These windows were so cool, and added a neat effect along with a “frame”.
I really, really like the silhouette of the spinning wheel.

Road to Nowhere-
Doesn’t that look like a fun road to wander down? Leading lines, not too busy, and color not too “in-your-face”.

Buzz!
Bee skeps, thankfully empty!

Old Shoes-
Perspective! Regrettably, at the moment I usually use the Intelligent Auto setting on the camera…I know, it’s bad. But I am learning how to use the other ones. IA was used on this photo, but I still like how it focused.

So, that was my trip to Conner Prairie!! Hope you liked it, and you are very patient if you read this whole thing!!

First photos!!!

These two photos were taken last summer, they are two of my favorites!!!
I was so happy that day, the sky was really a great color for taking pictures where the sky is a part of it.
I think I took like, 50 some photos of not only Queen Anne's Lace, but of many other things we have growing wild in our gully.
