THE WAY OF PEACE

“And the way of peace have they not known.”
Romans 3:17

There is much talk in our world about the subject of peace. Everyone wants peace of mind. Pacifists demonstrate for an end of all wars. There are continual cries for peace in the Middle East. Is there any genuine “peace” for the person without Christ? Speaking of the condition of the unsaved person, the Bible says emphatically “the way of peace have they not known.” The word “way” in the Bible usually speaks of a journey or road. From the beginning, man has been unable to find the road to peace, because real peace begins with Jesus Christ. How can a person have peace in his heart or peace in his relationships if he does not have peace with his Creator? Notice these words found in Acts 10:36: ”The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all).” Jesus is “the way of peace.” When one refuses Christ, he refuses the only sure “way of peace.” Peace comes as a result of being justified by faith. Romans 5:1 says, ”Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The world does not know “the way of peace.” Isaiah 57:21 declares, ”There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” Is it any wonder that there is such a lack of peace in our society and in our generation? Anxiety and stress are household words and a concern for most individuals. Medications to calm the nerves are rampant. Doctors prescribe mood-altering drugs for millions, many of whom are children. People need medicine to help them sleep at night and medicine to help them cope during the day. Domestic violence is commonplace. Road rage, anger, and violence on the highways, is a growing concern. Suicide abounds. Depression is increasing dramatically. There is a “way of peace.” It is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Isaiah announced that He would be called the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). World peace will never be possible until Jesus Christ reigns on this earth. But He provides enduring peace with God through the reconciliation that salvation brings. He produces peace in our hearts and lives through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. He leads us in paths of peace as we follow His commands. There is a “way of peace” that those without Christ cannot know, and it is found in the person and work of Jesus.
