• Nov. 21, 2008 - Show & Tell: It Must Be Love?
Wild horses could not drag me off to a football game on a cold night like this one, but no matter to my dear husband and oldest son, the stout fans. My offering for show & tell this week is a picture of them leaving for the game tonight. It is a semi-state final game for our local high school. Always makes me laugh inside when I think of us being homeschoolers and my husband having a season pass to the local high school sports. I'd have to say that it has been fun for the kids. He is taking Grace to a girls basketball game tomorrow afternoon.
If you'd like to see more Show & Tell entries, stop by Mary's blog and she has a slew of them linked. Thanks Mary!
Update: Carmel won! 38-3!!! Next week is the State Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium. You know my men will be there. |

• Nov. 16, 2008 - Expectations
Posted By Jan
Even though I didn't think I was going there, I entered the womens' conference weekend with all kinds of expectations. Expectations about how God was going to move and work in our midst, and what that might look like. We had been praying for weeks about the different women who were coming, praying for breakthroughs in their lives, praying for freedom in their walk with God.
Friday night felt extremely awkward like the first day of school, everyone assessing one another, and trying to gauge if the situation was safe enough to let down walls of protection. Our church is hurting, disjointed, needing the healing touch of God. Many lies have been let in through footholds that each one of us have failed to guard against.
The weekend ended with many surprises. Reconnecting with old acquaintenances, deepening ties with good friends, and making some new friends. The speaker was incredible - a woman who is easy to relate to, honest and open about her walk with God. I'm still processing my feelings about all that took place - somewhat disappointed that the weekend didn't unfold the way I'd hoped, yet trying to feel thankful for the intimate moments that surprised me. |

• Nov. 14, 2008 - Going in Fifty Directions
Posted By Jan
My mind is going in fifty directions at once this morning as I try and organize a day which is beyond manageable. I'm leaving this evening for a women's conference which will last all weekend. I haven't even begun to pack yet though I have a few items organized on my bed. I've a load of laundry in the wash containing vital elements of clothing, and while that rattles and hums the piano teacher in mid-stride in the living room with the weekly lessons.
My two older daughters will leave just after I do to attend a whole night of activites with their Youth. Sleep Deprivation, the name says it all. Before they leave, they have a full day of school to complete and log. And, they can hardly concentrate as they anticipate all the fun they are going to have with friends.
My youngest daughter has two engagements today: a date with her middle school youth pastor this afternoon, and a sleepover with friends which starts at suppertime. As I will be well on my way by the time she has to leave, she has arranged her own ride. She also needs to pack a bag, but while she's supposed to be concentrating on a math lesson, her head is leaps and bounds ahead of her as she imagines all the fun she's going to have.
The guys will have the run of the house tonight and even as I type they're making plans via a phone call as to how they're going to spend their time together. And, while the rest of the household will be recovering from lack of sleep my husband will be trying to get more rest than usual to prepare himself for a trip to the Yukon. He will leave on Monday morning for a week-long trip so he and I will have a few hours to catch up before spinning apart again.
I don't feel ready for a week of single-parenting. Usually before he departs I stock the house full of groceries, gas up the van, and clean the house from top to bottom so that I'm prepared to just deal with the kids and they're activities. I won't have the chance to do that this time. So although I'm away and supposed to be relaxing, I don't feel relaxed as I anticipate the backlog of chores waiting my return.

• Nov. 14, 2008 - Show & Tell: A Rainy Day
Welcome to Show & Tell,
hosted by Mary aka Canadagirl, who was nominated countless times, all deserved, I might add! So go vote for her and our many other nominated friends.
What do you do when it looks like this outside...

and you have 4 children ages 1-10 to entertain? Well, this is the subject of my Show & Tell today for that is where I found myself this morning. Now granted, I only have Faith here, the 1 year old, for 4 hours each week, so it is not like those of you who have toddlers 24/7! But we still have to find things to do when we'd rather be outdoors. So, here is what we found to keep ourselves occupied.
First I turned on our piano. That sounds funny, but our piano has 100 pre-programmed classical songs that will play for us. Whenever I want to be inspired, I turn it on.
Next, we got out the paints.

When my kids were young, we always painted on rainy days. We need to do this more!

Next came out the homemade play dough. (SO much better than the other stuff.)

Then it was time to read!

And I got some dough started and my laundry is done!

Aw, empty laundry baskets!

Where is the 10 year old? Yes, the 10 year old earned some computer time...

A rainy, cold day in November can inspire anyone to stay at home and be busy!

• Nov. 13, 2008 - Table Top Learning
I placed a lot of maps that I would like the children to learn: the Oregon trail, Indian territories, different sections of the United States (Eastern states, Western States, Midwest States, 13 Colonies, etc) on the table. I then placed a large piece of vinyl (bought from Walmart's sewing section) on top of the maps. I have been happily surprised that my son, within a week of doing this, has been sharing with daddy all the names of the states that he can identify on a blank map. The children discuss the maps while they eat. It sure has made fun conversations at the table. I had to take a picture of them during lunch because it was exciting to see them so engaged.

Warning: Don't put anything hot on vinyl because it does melt!
P.S. For those who love to lapbook or use the Truthquesthistory.com list of books with history, there is a fun free test taking website www.bookadventure.com that gives free goodies (books, book marks, prizes) for so many points. Parents have complete control of the choice or option of this. It is a free website sponsored by a number of companies, one of which is Sylvan Learning Centers.
P.S.S.We look forward to sharing our grasshopper/cricket lapbook with all of you. It has been one of our favorites for lapbooking. We have been using the discovery streaming website (free thirty day trial) in which we watch lot of different clips of the topics we are studying in our lapbook. Yesterday, we went to China and visited all the favorite landmarks. We had fun looking at the grasshoppers on sticks that sold in the markets. |
