Aug. 4, 2007 - Week 1 Wrap-Up
I do this mainly for my family back home whom, I'm sure, would appreciate visible evidence of what we do around here (as opposed to my explanations, which tend to forget a lot of things). Here is a look at what we did this week. Remember please that this was our first week back, which tends to be a light week made up of mostly review work.
I didn't think to snap any pictures of our treasure hunt, but that was a great kick-off to our school year. I made up a bunch of clues done with the grammar of pirates (me hardy). The clues led them to their school supplies in various places around the back yard. I've never seen kids so excited to find scissors! The final treasure were packets of M&M's. Mmmm, the yummiest treasure of all :)

Big Man (7): Week 1 Abeka math

Little Monkey (5): Week 1 Abeka math

Big Man: Week 1 reading basket choices, plus the McGuffey reader he's doing with daddy (this was a light week, since we had some surprises thrown at us, including an E.R. visit for Big Mans knee. After a day in the hot sun, then hours spent at the doctors office then E.R., neither one of us wanted to do anything but lay in the air conditioning and watch a movie!)

Big Man: Week 1 history papers - the fall of the Roman Empire (map, worksheet, coloring page)

Little Monkey: Week 1 misc. - a Roman Soldier, and a page from his Sounds and Letters book

Our History project: Roman Road Dessert. Yummy!! This cemented in their heads how the Romans constructed their roads. My kids tend to forget things if they don't do something with the facts they're given, so we constructed a road like this: bottom layer of "rocks" (mini oreos), next layer of sand mixed with broken rocks/tiles (choc. pudding with ChocoNilla Rice Krispies), next layer of concrete mixed with broken rocks/tiles (cool whip with ChocoNilla Rice Krispies), last layer flat rocks used as paving stones (choc. wafers), decorative stones to mark sides of road (marshmallows)

The result? Yummylicious!!

Peanut (2) happily playing a Reader Rabbit game on the computer.
Next week we'll be adding the other subjects in: art, music appreciation, science. We'll also get all of the subjects going full speed that were just review this week. Overall, reviewing what we learned last year went quite well. I had visions of chronic forgetfullness, but Big Man remembered far more details than I had thought he would. What a fun first week! Next week we get to end the week with our first field trip of the year, a visit to the local history museum, complete with midevil tales of dragons and a sword fight! Woo Hoo!

I just LOVE your blog, not sure how I stumbled on here.
Is that Abeka Math 2? If so, are you using the teacher's manual? I was all set to do Horizons math 2, but I have to say I'm so incredibly bored by it. Abeka and Horizons seem to be so similar but Abeka's layout just seems so much nicer. I think it would be a nice change of pace. Decisions, decisions...
Happy Schooling- looks like you guys are off to an awesome start.
