My Quivers Full

Aug. 7, 2007 - Lessons From Our Garden

This was our first year planting a garden.  When we bought this house there was a raised garden bed in back where many weeds happily grew.  The weeds are revolting against being pushed out of their cozy home, but we (miraculously) were able to grow some things.  The last time I tried growing food, it was the late 90's and we lived in Michigan.  I had successfully encouraged some tomatoes to grow.  They looked beautiful, and the tomatoes were just beginning to turn red.  Then one day, as I peeked out the kitchen window while washing dishes, I saw the blur that was our beagle gleefully racing around the backyard with the stick I had staked the tomatoes with.  The tomatoes were hanging on for dear life, whipping around in the wind, looking like a luxurious green mane for our dog.  Here are the lessons we have learned from our garden:

1.  Never leave a beagle alone with a tomato stake.  No matter how cute they are, they cannot be trusted.

2.  Even if you are devoted, you cannot will your strawberries into exsistence.

3.  God has made some mighty resilient food for us to grow!

4.  No matter how good it looks on the outside, it may still be green on the inside.

The kids have totally enjoyed having a garden and are already talking about what to plant next year.  We are still awaiting the arrival of ripe watermelons, our tomato plants are groaning under the weight of such bounty, and our strawberries are done for the year.  Next year, maybe we'll grow enough of something, anything to make a dent in the grocery bill.
