May. 31, 2008 - Our Last Week . . . Yippee!!!
FINALLY we're done with our schoolyear
Our last week was not what I had hoped it would be. A couple of the kids had a lovely head cold for the first part of the week, there was a day of bickering between kids, and by the end of the week I had caught the same head cold the others had. I'm just starting to come around.
I'm disappointed I was feeling so crummy during our Homeschool Fair. I think it would have been fun if I had been feeling better. Instead, I was all hopped up on Nyquil (there wasn't any Dayquil left in our house at the time) and I struggled to walk in a straight line, let alone browse books and get with some people I had been wanting to meet. On the plus side, my darling Hubby had the day off so he came along for crowd control. The kids enjoyed Mad Science, especially when he made smoke rings shoot out of a trash can, and demonstrated a working hoverboard. The highlight of the trip, however, were the balloons they got. One of the women working the main booth knew how to do some balloon animals, and before we left Peanut (3) had a dog, and Big Man (8) and Little Monkey (5) both had balloon swords.
We managed to finish our schoolwork by Thursday, although we were not able to do as much with history as I had hoped. We did the Colonial-era games as I had planned, and we did Silhouettes of Big Man and Little Monkey. Unfortunately, my flashlight battery was acting up, so we had limited time. The silhouettes turned out too big, so it looks like my kids have monster heads. I didn't have enough time to get the seating adjusted without running out of light, so I went with what I could.

Also, the kids really enjoyed the Bilbo-catchers we made. The colonists had Dixie Cups and tin foil, right?
No matter, they thought it was a great toy. Little Monkey then decided he needed a sturdier one, and proceeded to make one out of a "Stackers" cup, a foam ball, and a stretchy snake scotch taped between them :) He's a creative little guy. Here's Big Man working his catcher:
Hard to get an action shot on this one, but trust me, they got the catchers working and they were entertained for quite a long time. We didn't get to a colonial era meal I had planned. They always enjoy that kind of thing, but we'll do that this fall instead.
I've started getting my planner pages going for next year. I've got a loooong way to go before I'm done with those. It's an all summer project, but I need to make myself work on it a little at a time so I don't have a mad rush come end of August! Also, I need to get finished up with our plan for the kids to retain the learning from this schoolyear. Once I have that done, I'll post what we'll be doing. Maybe it'll help someone else out there :)
Everyone is excited to be done for the summer. We're spending today getting all of the water toys in the back yard set up. Summer, as usual, decided to begin with a bang and it's terribly hot and humid outside. I'm still too out of it to get the gardening done this weekend that I wanted, but hopefully I'll be well enough by early next week!

I just love your blog. I was reading through it and seen you are doing science chemistry. I didn't see where you had the experiment with corn starch and water though. It is great fun. On you tube there is a video of 2 boys who made a pool out of it. I hope you can post links here. Leena
