My Quivers Full

Jun. 4, 2008 - Summer Reading

We've been busy this week:  attempting to get the pool up and running, getting the garden up and running, planning for my hubby's birthday tomorrow, planning for Little Monkeys (5) birthday party in a couple of weeks, getting some planning done for our support group this fall, getting planning done for my kiddos this fall, cleaning, dog training, Peanut (3) training  . . . you get the idea.  Whew!  No wonder this first week of "vacation" is tiring me out!!

Anyway, one of the things my kids enjoy doing during the summer is earn awards for their reading.  I make them read thru the summer anyway, so I guess they recognize they might as well get some kind of prize along with that.  We've already signed up at our local library for the "Catch the Reading Bug" club.  Big Man (8) maxed out his library card -- we're allowed ten books out per card -- and is busy plugging away at his favorites.  I'm always on the lookout for book clubs to motivate my kids.  If you're on the hunt for a reading club your kids will like, here are some ideas to get you started:

The Old Schoolhouse is offering Summer Splash to help.  Your kids can earn a free ebook out of this one.  Even if you don't participate, they have some cute bookmarks you can print.

The Old Spaghetti Factory is offering a reading club also.  For every five books, you get a free kids meal.  Yummo!

If you live within 150 miles of a Six Flags, you can get signed up with their Read to Succeed challenge.  I haven't done this one, so I don't know exactly how to sign up, but a friend of mine said it isn't difficult.

Cici's Pizza is a popular "Daddy Fun Day" dinner option for my clan.  This summer they have teamed up with Half Price Books to offer the "Feed Your Brain" reading club.  The kids can earn a free buffet from Cici's or a $3 shopping card from Half Price Books!!  Pretty neat!

These are just a few options that are out there, I'm sure.  The point is, don't let those reading skills get sloppy this summer!  There are lots of clubs to keep them motivated and reading away   Enjoy!
