Peter's father leapt up with Kaguna in his arms and called out, "Children, run!" Peter grasped Rebekah's hand and scrambled after their mother, who ran out after their father out of the hut. Rebekah tripped and fell headlong. Peter hauled her roughly to her feet, and dragged her outside. Hearing someone coming, so he shoved Rebekah down in the shadows by the hut, and squeezed himself as close to the hut as possible, unsure whether they had been seen or not. The man rushed past, and Peter recognized him as one of the Christians. He immediately jumped up, pulling Rebekah along with him. They quietly moved towards a hill where Peter knew of a place where he hoped they could hide. Then a sudden yell told Peter that they had been seen. He began to run, zigzagging franticly up the slope of the hill. Rebekah panted and lagged behind. He slowed down slightly, but it was all he could do, even though the soldier was a good distance away. The soldier fell over a rock, and certain he could not overtake them, raised his gun. The report of the gun and Rebekah's scream rang out at almost the same moment. She fell to the ground, unable to walk, as the bullet had gone through her left knee. Fear gave Peter new strength as he picked her up and dodged behind a huge rock that hid them from the soldier. Halfway up this rock there was a hole that opened upwards, with enough room within to hide six grown men easily. It was easy to climb to, but Peter wasn't sure if he could manage to get Rebekah up to the hole. He asked if she thought she could climb up with his help. She whispered "I'll try" Peter wrapped one arm around her waist and began the ascent. She managed to support herself but relied heavily on Peter's arm. Halfway up Peter thought that he was at the last of his strength. But he persevered and finally tumbled into the cave with Rebekah. She fainted with pain and exhaustion on reaching the cave. Peter peeped cautiously over the edge of the opening and saw several soldiers searching for them. He continued watching them until they moved away from the rock. Then he prayed a prayer of thanksgiving that their enemies had not killed them and wrapped Rebekah's knee tightly with a strip of his blanket. After this, he fell asleep on the stone floor just as the first rays of sunlight shone into the cave. |
