Up until now, my latest observations have been made by my children....as most of them are made by my children! As I said in the first part of this, I have resisted each new addition (animals) my husband and children have made to the farm. However, NOW, I wouldn't trade it all for a million dollars! Yes, I do think at some point we need to stop adding animals, but with each new addition, I have seen my children light up and jump in learning about caring for the new animal and develop a new love for God's creation. I have experienced the same thing myself (just not as much!). I love living out in the country, I love gardening, but I have had to develop the love (like) for the pigs, goats, cows and chickens (and I can't say I'm still quite there yet with the goats!). The 'homesteading/farming' adventure has been an incredible one for our whole family..yes..even myself. The latest observation...was made by myself. If any of you are farmers, or grew up on a farm, you will think I am completely ignorant, but I thought this was so neat! 3)We have a momma pig that is going to have babies at any time. My husband and my children have been running out and checking on them continually. I think the baby piglets are absolutely adorable, but up until they are born, I usually keep my distance. However, yesterday, my husband was down by her (the momma pig) farrowing crate doing some work and I looked in at her and she was doing something with the fresh straw that my son had just put in. I thought, "He just did all that work, and that dumb pig is messing it all up." However, I kept watching her because she seemed very intent on whatever it was she was doing (and it wasn't easy because she doesn't have much room to move in there!). As I continued to watch, I couldn't believe what she was doing........she was preparing a little nesting spot for where her babies were going to be born. I asked my husband about it and he nonchalantly told me that yeah, she had done that last time too. I continued to watch her, that is exactly what she was doing. Isn't God's creation amazing?? She knows her babies are about to be born and so she is preparing a safe, warm spot, close to her for them to be born. Isn't it amazing that something as dirty, smelly, and awful as a big momma pig knows the beauty of giving birth, and her babies, and she prepares for them?!! I'm sure that's where we get the term "nesting" from, all pregnant mommas do the same thing. Since then, I'm looking at her a little bit different! I may even have to save up some extra dessert for her after supper?! |
